    Musicians in the Schools is an inschoolprogram that educates and entertains studentsfrom Kindergarten toGrade 12 about the variousaspects of music performance. Since 1971, thisoutreach

    program,

    available

    in

    both

    English

    and

    French, brings musical ensembles, as well asindividual musicians, into schools to instruct andperformonavarietyoforchestralinstruments.ForschoolsthatcannotaffordthetransportationcoststobringstudentstotheNAC,thisprogramisoftentheir only opportunity to benefit from a liveperformance.

    Ensembles combining varieties of wind, brass,

    strings,and

    percussion

    instruments

    visit

    participatingschoolsandgive liveperformances inauditoriums and classrooms. Students are invitedto interactwith themusicians at different pointsduringtheperformances,sometimesintheroleofconductor or performer. Seven differentcombinations ofmusical instruments are typicallyavailable each school year to travel to Ottawaschoolswithmusicthatcoversthespectrum.

    TheRagtime Brass Sextet wasformedin1979specificallytoperformaseriesofsummerconcertsonOttawa'sfamousSparksStreetMall.Sincethenthegrouphasexpandeditsscopeconsiderably. Every year since 1983 this dynamic sextet has performed in schools all overeasternOntarioandwesternQuebecaspartoftheNationalArtsCentreOrchestra'sMusicians

    inthe

    Schools

    program.

    The

    group

    also

    represents

    the

    Ottawa

    Symphony

    Orchestra

    at

    various

    fundraising events. Ragtime Brass activities also include recitals, conventions, weddings,concerts, lectures, and radio and television shows. The repertoire is broad, ranging fromBaroque brass music to ragtime and big band tunes, although, as the name suggests,performancesareusuallyweightedtowardspopularmusicandlightclassics.AlthoughalotofthemusicperformedbytheRagtimeBrassisinthestandardrepertoireforbrassgroups,oftentimes the group is asked to perform for a specific occasion or function, and for thosecircumstances, they are proud to provide their own material, adapted and arranged asnecessary.

    Elizabeth attained a Bachelor of Music inEducation from the University of Ottawa and aMasters in Music Performance from IndianaUniversity. She studied with many renownedplayers includingDanielGress,PhilipFarkas,MeirRimon,MichaelHatfield,andArnoldJacobs.

    While studying, Elizabeth received the OttawaMusicFestivalSeniorScholarshipin1983,andtheNACOrchestraBursaryin1984.

    Elizabeth is presently performing in the NAC's Music in the Schools program in both the

    Angus is a graduate of McGill

    University,

    graduating

    with

    HighDistinction in trombone performance

    in 1979. He studied with Ted Griffith(Bass trombone MontrealSymphony). While in Montreal, heplayed with various groups, includingtheMcGillSymphonyOrchestra,McGillWind Ensemble, Socit de MusiqueContemporaine du Qubec, le StudiodeMusique AnciennedeMontral,l'Orchestre des Jeunes du Qubec,

    In 1981, after studying in Toronto and Chicago with Gordon Sweeney of the TorontoSymphony,andArnoldJacobsandFrankCrisafulli,oftheChicago Symphony,AngusmovedtoOttawa,accepting thepostof trombonistwith theRoyalCanadianMountedPoliceBand, apositionhehelduntil1993.

    SincemovingtoOttawa,AngushasperformedwiththeNationalArtsCentreOrchestra,andisamember

    of

    the

    Ottawa

    Symphony

    Orchestra.

    He

    is

    an

    active

    member

    of

    the

    freelance

    communityinandaroundtheNationalCapitalRegion,whereheplaysingroupsofalldifferentmusicalgenres.

    Angus is the trombone instructor at theConservatoiredeMusiquedeGatineau, aswell asProfessorofTromboneatCarletonUniversity.

    Aswellasaperformer,Angusisalsoactiveasanarrangerandcomposer,andhaswrittenandarrangedmusic for televisionand radio.Hehasalsoservedasadjudicator forvariousmusicfestivalsovertheyears.

    AngushasbeentheMusicalDirectoroftheOttawaJuniorYouthOrchestra,alargeensemblemadeupofyoungmusiciansfrominandaroundOttawa,since1995. Angus'otherconductingcommitments include the Parkdale Community Orchestra, and the Pembroke SymphonyOrchestra.

    NicholasAtkinson,tuba

    Nicholas Atkinson was born in Manchester,England,andcametoCanadain1957.Hebeganhismusical career playing tuba and string bass with

    CanadianArmy

    bands

    and

    later

    graduated

    from

    the

    University of Calgarywith a Bachelor ofMusic inPerformance.He subsequently studiedextensivelywith the legendary Arnold Jacobs of the ChicagoSymphony Orchestra. He also holds a Mastersdegree inEnglishLiterature fromtheUniversityofOttawa. He began a doctorate, but was soondivertedbythefineweatheroutside.

    SincemovingtoOttawa in1973,Mr.Atkinsonhas

    beenan

    active

    tuba

    player

    and

    teacher.

    He

    was

    amemberoftheRCMPBandforfourteenyearsand

    hasplayedwiththeNationalArtsCentreOrchestrasince 1976. He has been a soloist with theOrchestra on numerous occasions and has takenpartinseveralrecordings.

    During the 1989 season he was principal tuba with the MontrealSymphonyOrchestra,beginningalongassociationthatincludedmanyinternational tours and six recordings for London/Decca.Oneof thebusiesttubaplayersinCanada,hehasperformedwithallofthemajor

    orchestras.He

    has

    also

    performed

    and

    made

    several

    recordings

    with

    theHannafordStreetSilverBand.

    Asachambermusician,Mr.Atkinsonhasbeenaprominentmemberof severalbrassensemblesand isa foundingmemberof theRideauLakes Brass Quintet, Ragtime Brass and Capital BrassWorks, all ofwhichhavebeen featuredonCBCbroadcasts and recordings. Everysummersince1993hehasorganisedlargescalebrassconcertsattheOttawaInternationalChamberMusicFestival.

    Mr.AtkinsontaughtatQueensUniversityfortenyearsandattheUniversityofOttawafrom19772004. Heisawellknownbrasscoachandhasgivenclinicsalloverthecountry.In2006hewas invited to be the low brass instructor for theNational YouthOrchestra of Canada.Mr.AtkinsonisaperformingartistforBessonandYamaha. Hismanyhobbiesincludereading(widerangingandassiduous),crypticcrosswords (occasionalburstsof intelligence),andgolf(dangerousfanatic).

    knowledgeandappreciationofmusicamongyoungpeople.Inadditiontoahighlypopular subscription seriesofTDCanadaTrustFamilyAdventureswith theNACOrchestra, theOrchestrapresentsavarietyofopportunities forschools to learnaboutclassicalmusic:StudentMatinees,andOpenRehearsalstoallowstudentstoheartheOrchestraperform in itshomeattheNAC. Inaddition,Musicians inthe

    Schoolsprogramsincludingensembleperformancesandinstrumentsectionalstakethemusictothestudentsintheirschools.

    Consistent praise has followed this vibrant orchestra throughout its history of touring bothnationally and internationally, recording, and commissioningCanadianworks.CanadasNationalArts CentreOrchestra, now under the direction of renowned conductor/violinist/violist PinchasZukerman,continuestodrawaccoladesbothabroadandatitshomeinOttawawhereitgivesover100performancesayear.

    TheNACOrchestrawas founded in 1969 as the residentorchestraof thenewlyopenedNationalArtsCentre,withJeanMarieBeaudetasMusicDirectorandMarioBernardiasfoundingconductorand(from1971)MusicDirectoruntil1982. He was succeeded by Franco Mannino (1982 to1987),GabrielChmura (1987to1990),andTrevorPinnock(19911997). InApril 1998,Pinchas ZukermanwasnamedMusicDirectoroftheNACOrchestra.

    Pinchas Zukerman has led theOrchestraontourswithinCanadain 1999, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006and2008,toEuropeandIsraelin2000,and theUnitedStatesandMexicoin2003,witheducationalactivities ranging from masterclasses and questionandanswersessions to sectional rehearsalswith youth and communityorchestrasandstudentmatinees.

    TheNACOrchestrahas40 recordings to itsname, sixwithPinchas Zukerman:Haydn,Vivaldi,Beethoven,SchubertandtwoofMozart (aCDof flutequartets,andaCDoforchestralmusicandstringquintets).ThecommissioningoforiginalCanadianworkshasalwaysbeenanimportantpartoftheNationalArtsCentresmandatewithover90workscommissionedtodate.

    InadditiontoafullseriesofsubscriptionconcertsattheNationalArtsCentreeach season, toursareundertakento regions throughout Canada and around the world.Since the arrival of Pinchas Zukerman, education hasbeenanextremely importantcomponentofthesetours.Teacher Resource Kits have been developed fordistribution toelementary schools in the regions touredandacrossCanada,andthepublichasbeenabletofolloweach tour through fully interactive websites which arenow archived on the NACs Performing Arts Education

    Firstofall,theNACOrchestraismadeupof61menandwomen,playingtogetheronavarietyofmusicalinstruments.Theyaredividedintofourdifferentsections(string,woodwind,brassandpercussion)buttheyareunitedinonecommongoal:makingmusictogether.Youmightalreadyknowthatorchestrasarenotalwaysthesamesize.Smallerorchestras,withbetween20and34musicians,arecalledchamberorchestras.Largerorchestras,withbetween60and

    All these instruments, except the harp, have fourstrings.

    Their sound isproducedby the frictionofabowonastring,orpluckingthestringsbythefingers,allowingthemtovibrate.

    Plucking the strings is called pizzicato (meaningpluckedinItalian).

    withholes.Asamusicianblows through their tube, theycoverdifferentholeswiththeirfingerstoproducedifferentnotes.

    Somewindinstrumentsuseareedtoproducesound.Areed ismadeofthinwoodwhichvibratesagainstthe lipsasamusicianblows intotheinstrumenttocreateasound.

    Of the four woodwind instruments of the orchestra, only the flutedoesntrequireareed.

    Clarinetsaresinglereedinstruments,whereasoboesandbassoonsaredoublereed instruments. Itmeans that the oboists andbassoonists use

    doublereeds

    against

    their

    lips

    to

    create

    asound.

    Mostwind instruments aremade fromwood, likeebony,except for the flute,which isalmostalwaysmadeofsilver.
