Course: Introduction to Graphic Design

Dear Parent/Guardian:

It’s that time again! I hope you will take a few moments to read over the class syllabus for the Introduction to

Graphic Design Course. In my class, the students will be learning graphic design terminology and techniques. I

will try to keep you abreast of field trips and special projects throughout the school year.

Please pay particular attention to the student expectations and requirements. Your son or daughter will need to

bring two pens (preferably black ink), two pencils, loose-leaf notebook paper, and three-ring binder (any color)

with tabs to class each day. Ten points will be deducted for students that come to class unprepared, so please

make sure that your son/daughter understands the class policies.

Should you have any questions about the coursework, please feel free to contact me via phone or e-mail. If you

have no questions at this time, please sign and return the slip below stating that you and your child have read the

course resume and understand it. I am looking forward to the school year and believe it will be a rewarding one!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Guiteau

Tutorial Location: Room # 2201

DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY: The vision of the Mass Communications Academy Graphic Design

pathway is to prepare students for lifelong learning by exposure to real life experiences, consistent effective

instruction, and post-secondary options with emphasis on graphic arts. This education will produce eager, goal-

oriented, resourceful, law-abiding citizens who will contribute positively to the community.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to Graphic Design is the first step in preparing and exposing future designers to how graphic design

impacts our society. The various Graphic designers—or graphic artists—plan, analyze, and create visual solutions

to communications problems. They find the most effective way to get messages across in print, electronic, and

film media using a variety of methods such as color, type, illustration, photography, animation, and various print

and layout techniques.

Graphic designers develop the overall layout and production design of magazines, newspapers, journals, corporate

reports, and other publications. They also produce promotional displays, packaging, and marketing brochures for

products and services, design distinctive logos for products and businesses, and develop signs and signage

systems—called environmental graphics—for business and government. An increasing number of graphic

designers also develop material for Internet Web pages, interactive media, and multimedia projects. Graphic

designers also may produce the credits that appear before and after television programs and movies.

Graphic designers sometimes supervise assistants who follow instructions to complete parts of the design process.

Designers who run their own businesses also may devote time to developing new business contacts, choosing

equipment, and performing administrative tasks, such as reviewing catalogues and ordering samples.
