Student youth organizations continue to be an integral part of student development at the West Shore Career Technical District. Our students have once again had a very active and successful year in youth organization competitions. These competitions give our students the opportunity to showcase skills learned in the classroom. They also simulate real world work situations in a competition setting with students from other school districts. These activities build a bridge between classroom learning and the competitive job market. West Shore offers a wide variety of programs to prepare students for college and eventually the world of work. Detailed information about these programs can be obtained from your child’s high school counselor or by calling the West Shore office directly. We would be happy to assist you in any way with the planning of your child’s educational future. COMMUNITY CONNECTIONBACK IN THE NEWS

P.J. Kettel, who was honored in our fall edition of the WestShore Wave, is making headlines again! We reported earlier,he was the Ohio CBI Award winner from this region. As aresult of this award, Mr. Kettle was recognized by his business,Giant Eagle Foods as one of three “Community Service”award winners. Giant Eagle only presents three awards likethis a year, which makes this even more impressive. The factthat it also included a $1000.00 check served to make thiseven sweeter. Mr. Kettle’s support of this program has provedto be an invaluable aid to our schools. We are so thankful tocommunity members that give up their time and expertise tomake a difference in our students’ lives.

More Honors achieved by a West Shore Program!

All students have the ability to learn, establish a careerplan and carry out their career path to gain success intheir life. Career Based Intervention (CBI) programsare designed to assist students who have barriers tocareer and academic success to establish a career pathusing work based learning experiences. Mrs. LizWeinman and her 9th grade CBI program have startedon that path!

Every year each CBI Region chooses a PartnershipAward winner. These are employers that team up withCBI students and accept the challenge to mentor and berole models for them. Lakewood High Schools’ NutritionServices took up the challenge. They were approachedat the beginning of the year about piloting a program. This would involve the 9th grade CBI students doingfood prep work, unloading supplies, delivering food, making salads and working in the dish room. There wassome initial reluctance, however, but as time went onthe staff took on their mentorship roles and soared. Theyworked with the students and together had a veryproductive pilot year. A very special thank you toBernadette Winners, Manager of Lakewood High SchoolNutrition Services and Nancy Early, Director of NutritionServices, for their willingness to take on this importantand beneficial program.

BEN GIULIANO graduatedfrom Lakewood High School in2006. Automobiles of all sizes, makes, and models alwaysfascinated Ben. His father wasalways restoring cars and thathelped him to form his careerpath. Ben completed the two yearWest Shore Career-Technicalp r o g r a m A u t o m o t i v eTechnology and there was nolooking back. Ben liked how the

classes in the program were taught. “Not only did you learn allthe repair details but you also learned how to deal with customers, supervisors and all you meet in the real world.”

Ben has moved on to the Wyoming Technical Institute. Theschool is located 30 miles east of Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, theydo not have a placement exam and he has found he is startingover in many of his classes. “I am even tutoring some of the otherstudents!” His future goals include collision work, customfabrication, and eventually chassis fabrication. What is Ben’sadvice to other students? “The Auto Tech program helped mejump start my college career. I really feel a step ahead of all theother students in my college classes.” We wish Ben luck as hecontinues in school.

Another West Shore Career-Technicalstudent is busy at college. CAITLINWALSH is currently in her 2nd yearat the University of Cincinnati. Shewas a student in the West ShoreCareer-Technical CAD program.Caitlin stated, through CAD, “Ilearned about how to think aboutobjects in three dimensions, but drawthem in two. This is one of the mostdifficult parts of architecture.” At theUniversity of Cincinnati they areforced to hand draft until the middle of the sophomore year. Thisis to develop their rendering skills and learn to sketch more freelythan a computer would allow. When Caitlin finally started CADthis past quarter she definitely had the upper hand. She alreadyknew all the basic tools which then enabled Caitlin to focus moreon the detail aspects of how a building is constructed.

Now that Caitlin is beginning her co-op she is finding thatemployers are most interested in her CAD skills. She also stressesthat admittance to UC is based on ACT scores, class rank, andhigh school courses. Having taken CAD in high school was adefinite plus, that and the fact that she got her application intothe University of Cincinnati in September! “My experience inthe West Shore Career-Technical CAD program was invaluable!”
