particular song often means something different to just about every person you ask. During his 15 years working with music for

material and a music provider, especially if there's an age difference. During the first part of the class we'll compare older songs to
newer songs with the same genre definition to see how the meanings change over time. How is that "Shout." by the Isley
Brothers, "Blurrred Lines" by Robin Thicke, and "Diamonds" by Rhianna are all classified as R&B songs. We'll also compare
various genre lists used by companies ranging from Billboard Magazine to Soundminer. During the second part of the class
people will hand Chas one of their songs on CD with the Genre on a piece of paper. Chas will play the song for the class, and
we'll come up with a group consensus as to the genre before we look to see what the artist had written down. To participate in the

Garth Hjelte has been working with music samplers and sampling technology since the mid-80‘s, when sampling was just in
its infancy with the Emulator I and Ensoniq Mirage. After working as a sampled sound creator and writing as a sampler authority
in several reputable music journals, he started writing computer software that pioneered the use of sampled instruments across a
wide range of sampler hardware instruments. In 1998 as CERO of Chicken Systems, the software Translator was released and has
sold in excess of 50,000 copies. When sampler generation technology made the leap from hardware keyboards and racks to
standard Mac and Windows computers, Translator was the software that brought the sounds form the hardware world to the
software world, bridging the gap to make the transition a success. Garth has since refined the conversion technology, as well as
consulting just about every sound developer around. Chicken System‘s technology has been used in custom form by Emu, Akai,
Korg, Yamaha, plus sound developers such as EastWest, ProjectSAM, FLStudio (now Image-Line), Sonic Reality, Garritan,
AudioBro, Dan Dean, Digital Sound Factory, WarpIV, Flying Hand Percussion, and many others. Their technology has most been
prominently licensed to Native Instruments and allow full foreign-format loading of practically every format known. Chicken
System‘s has also innovated with many construction, editing, creation, and organization tools. Their 25-year experience has
impacted the music technology world in a unique and significant way. Garth currently continues advising companies with a
