INTRODUCTION Thismanualservesasatoolwithideasandsuggestionstoeducateyourcommunityonlife,health,andeducationintheimpoverishedcommunitiesofTanzania,EastAfricaasidentifiedthroughVillageLifeOutreachProject.

WHATISVILLAGELIFEOUTREACHPROJECT? VillageLifeOutreachProject,Inc.isaCincinnati-basednon-profitorganizationwhosemissionistoUniteCommunitiestoPromoteLife,Health,andEducation.Wepartnerwithrural,impoverishedvillagesinTanzania,EastAfrica,todesignandimplementsustainableprojectstofightpoverty,provideaccesstocleanwaterandhealthcare,andimproveeducationaloutcomes.ByservingourfriendsinTanzania,wealsolearnfromourselves,andlessonsofcommunity,humanitarianism,andsocialresponsibility-lessonsthatVillagelifebringshometoourlocalcommunitythrougheducationinitiativesandservice-learningprojects.InMay2003,Dr.ChristopherLewisspentonemonthworkinginasmallruralhospitalinTanzania,EastAfricaaspartofhisglobalhealthtrainingattheUniversityofCincinnati.Hefrequentlywitnessedvillagersbeingcarriedinfromtheoutlyingvillages,havingdiedwhiletryingtomakethearduousjourneytothehospital.VillageLifeOutreachProjectwasbornfromadesiretopartnerwithvillagesintheremote,surroundingregiontoimproveconditionsofLife,Health,andEducation–whilebringinglessonslearnedinAfricabackhometotheCincinnaticommunity.

WHYPARTICIPATE?GettinginvolvedwithVillageLifeOutreachProjectisauniquewayforyourschooltointeractwithamovementtopartnerwithTanzanianvillagestoimproveoveralllifeconditions,whileatthesametimelearninguniquelessonsaboutAfrica,community,andsocialconsciousness.VillageLifeusesaninterdisciplinaryapproachtodesignandimplementprojectstofightpovertyandimproveconditionsoflife,healthandeducation.BypartneringwithVillageLife,yourstudentswillgain

invaluableexposuretolifeinTanzaniaandthevarietyofproblemsthatouttargetvillagesareovercomingthroughpartnership,asustainableapproachtoservice,andlove.VillageLifeencouragesCincinnati-areastudentstofocusonthesimilaritiestheysharewiththeirTanzanianpeersratherthanthedifferences,andbydoingso,promotestheideaofaglobalcommunityinwhichweallhavethepowertoimproveeach-other’slives.VillageLifehasathrivingpartnershipwiththeUniversityofCincinnati,andVillageLifepartnerschoolsareabletolinkwithprofessionalandUCstudentsinthefieldsofMedicine,Nursing,Education,Pharmacy,Engineering,Architecture,andmore.VillageLifealsohasmanycommunity,government,business,andmediafriendsandpartners,makingiteasyforyourstudents’effortstoberecognizedandchampionedinourregion.Getyourschoolinvolvedinraisingawarenessandspreadinglovetoday!

WHEN?Engageintheactivities,events,orservice-learningopportunitiesatanytimeinyourschoolyear.

ACCOMPLISHMENTSVillageLife,withthehelpofmany,manysupportersandvolunteers,hasbroughtaboutmiraculouschangessince2004.ThankstoourfriendsinCincinnati,Tanzania,andbeyond,wehave:

• Trainedvillagerstobuildandmaintainover400slowsandwaterfilters.• Treatedover8,000patientsinMobileFieldClinics.• ImplementedaNutritionProgramthatfeedsover1,000Tanzanianstudentseachschool

dayandteachesCincinnati-areastudentsaboutnutrition.• Distributedover8,000mosquitonetstofightmalaria• PartneredwithoveradozenCincinnati-areaschoolstoexpandhorizonsandengageour

youthinservice-learningactivities.OnApril1,2011,VillageLifeOutreachProjectachievedamajormilestonebyopeningtheRocheHealthCenter.Thisisthefirst-everregionalhealthcarecenterprovidingaccesstopreventivemedicineandotherbasichealthcareneedsservingmorethan20,000villagers.Morethanjustsavinglives,thehealthcenterservesaasresourcecenterforUCstudentsandfacultyfromavarietyofdisciplines.TheRocheHealthCenterisacollaborativeeffortbetweenVillageLifeandtheUniversityofCincinnati’sSchoolofArchitectureandCollegesofMedicine,EngineeringandNursing.

DAY1:ASSEMBLYAssembly(30-40minutes)–Anassemblyduringtheday,whereapowerpointwillbepresentedbyKelliandPhil.Also,Dr.ChrisLewisandpossiblyateamofspeakersfromVillageLifewillhaveapresentation.AtthepresentationtherewillbedisplaysdescribingtheVillageLifeproject.RequestaPresenterthroughVillageLife’sEducationCommittee!

o GoalsofAssembly:ThepresentationwillinformthestudentsinadvanceoftheupcomingweektosupportVillageLife.ThepresentationwillalsoinformthestudentsofhowfortunatetheyaretoliveinAmerica.ItwillinformthemthattherearethreevillagesinTanzaniathatneedguidanceinhealth,lifeandeducation.

DAY2:BEHUNGRYBeHungry–Nofullmealsfor30hours.Onericemealatlunchandwaterthroughouttheday.Atlunch,atablewillbesetupthatservesriceandtakesdonations.AdisplayofanAmericamealandaTanzanianmeal.Also,acomparisonofwaterqualitywillbedisplayed.

Afternoon–Ameetingwillbeheldafterschooltoinformstudentsofthesafetyprecautionsforridingbikestoschool.Anannouncementwillalsobemadethatremindsstudentsoftheprecautions.

DAY4:CHANGE&CHALKFORCHANGEChangeforChange–Studentswillbeencouragedtobringinchangeorbillstopreventteachersfromteaching.Theteacherswillbestalledfromteachinguntilthemoneyiscounted/rolledandrecorded(onedollarbill=aminutekeptfromteacher).

o ChalkforChange–(organizedbystudentcouncil)Reservesidewalk,tenniscourt,basketballcourt,andparkinglotspaces.Apersoncanpurchasealargespaceofblacktopforthepriceof2dollars.The“artists”canusetheirownchalk,ortheycanbuyitforonedollar.Theartdepartmentwillbeinvolved.Theeventwillbeginat1:20pm.Thepictureswillbeseenbyparentsthefollowingnightattheschedulingfair(Thursday).

o CategoriesofDrawing:Schoolspirit,VillageLifeProject(water,bikes,etc.)Africananimals,Wordsofinspiration,communityserviceevents.

Suggestionforconsideration:Drawingsshouldbeapproved;whocanapprovethedrawingsatyourschool?Teacherscanjudgethedrawingsdependingoncreativity,detail,andoverallappearance.Thetoptwobestdrawingswillreceiveawards.

DAY5:WALKTHETALKWalktheTalk-Duringtheday,studentswilllearninanuncomfortableenvironmentasthestudentsinTanzania.Involvedstudentswillwearflip-flops.Anyonethatisinvolvedinthiseventwillhavethechancetowina“LearntheLife”shirtand/orsomeotherprize.

DAY6:NETSFORNETSSpiritDay–getstudentsexcitedaboutthe“NetsforNets”gamelaterintheafternoon.NetsforNets–Abasketballrallycantakeplaceduring7thbell.Therallywillbesomewhatlikeapeprallybutwithmorebasketball.Admissionforstudentswillbe$1.00.Studentsnotinvolvedwillhavetostayinclass.ThemoneywillgotopayformosquitonetsinTanzania.Therewillbeadisplayofnetsinthelobbyofthegym.Athalftimetherewillbeaspeaker(Dr.Lewis)thattotalsrevenuefromtheweekandfinal/closingcomments.

o AtlunchtherewillbeadisplayofthemosquitonetsfromvillagersinTanzaniaaswellasinformationpamphletsabouttheneedfornets.

6:00am:OnatypicalschooldayforaruralTanzanianchild,theywouldnormallygetupusuallyataroundsix.Aftertheyareup,eachandeveryoneofthemwouldhavetheirchoresassignedtothem.Forinstance,theboyswouldgetthegoatsandthesheepoutofsidehouseandtiethemaroundthehouse.Thegirlsareusuallyassignedtocleanthekitcheninthemorningandgofetchwaterattheriver.Oncedonewiththechorestheystartpreparingforschool.

7:00am:Theyaresupposedtobethereataroundsevenandifyoudon’tmakethistimeyougetpunished,usuallybybeingwhippedonthebuttocksorsomeotherkindofpunishment.Inmosthouseholds,thekidsdonotreceivebreakfastthisearlyinthemorning,sotheyjustgettheirschoolbagsandputontheiruniformsandthenheadoutforschool.

12:00pm:Theirfirstmealofthedayisusuallylunch,whichisaroundnoon.Duringtheone-hourlunchbreak,themajorityofthestudentsgobackhome.Mostofthemusuallyfindthefoodpreparedforthem;howevertherearesituationsordayswherebysomeofthechildrenhavetopreparethefoodthemselves.Thishappenswhentheparentsarenotathomeortheyhaveajobthatkeepsthemawayfromhome.Apartfrompreparinglunch,therearesomedayswhenstudentsareaskedtotakesomefirewood,brooms,waterorcleaningtoolssuchasahoeorashoveltoschool.Soifthereissomethingthattheydon’thaveathome,theyhavetoeatveryquicklyandgolookforit.Theyhaveverylimitedtimeduringlunchbreak;theyhardlygetanytimetojustsitforabitandrelax.

Afternoon:Eachandeveryschoolhastheirownscheduleaswhatthechildrenareassignedtodo.Butaftertheyaredonewiththeafternoonclasses,theycleantheenvironmentaroundtheschoolandthentheyhavetimeforsportsandotheractivities.

Saturdays:Onweekendstheyhaveadifferentschedule;usuallythemorningsarethesameasthedayswhentheygotoschool.Theygetupveryearlyinthemorninganddotheirmorningchoresandheadouttothefarm.Usuallytheyarebackfromthe“shamba”ataround9amandthentheydrinkporridge.Oncedonewithbreakfasteverybodyisofffortheirnextassignmentoftheday.Thisisthedaythattheboystakeoutthecowstothefieldsforgrazing,andusuallyeverybodyhastheirownturn.Onthefieldstheyhuntbirds,lookforfruitsatthesametimekeeptheireyesonthelivestocksothattheydon’truincrops.Becauseiftheanimalshappentoruinthecropstheygetseverelypunishedbytheownerofthefarmandgetintroubleathome.Thegirlsstayathometohelpoutthemotherstopeelcassavaandtakethemtotherockstopoundthemandtakethecyanideout.OnmostSaturdaystheyareoccupiedthroughouttheday.

Sundays:OnSundaystheygettorestalittlebit,thisisthedaythattheyattendthechurchthenafterlunchtheygotothecenter.Thisiswheretheshopsareandtheymighthavealittlemoneytobuysomecandyandballoons.Theyalsogotothelakeorarivertoswim.Itistheirfunday!
