Anticipatory Set Teacher will play the song Hello to all the Children of the World written by

Pamela Conn Beall and Susan Hagen Nipp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD0weQAg8ew Why did I open with that song? Learning to communicate in different languages even if it is just the word “hello”

is a simple way to try and learn someone else’ s culture. What is culture? (Teacher creates web on smart board with students help) What is a passport (official document that allows you to travel to different countries.)

Teacher will bring in his/her passport to share for students to touch and hold (primary source document)

EXAMPLE of what this web could look like.

Procedures:Center 1: Passports

This center will be focusing on creating their passport and “brief case” that they will utilize for the rest of the unit

I will provide them with a picture of their own face from earlier in the year and ask them to glue it onto the first page where the picture square is.

The students will be asked to fill out the appropriate information on their passport.

When they open it up it will have 3 different pages for the 3 countries we are going to “visit” this unit.

Each will be provided with a folder and brown construction paper. Tracers for the handles will be provided and children will be asked to glue their

handles onto their brown construction paper. An example will be provided so the students can see what this is supposed to

look like. A black and white outline of the world map will be printed for the students to

glue on the inside of their folder. We will be coloring countries in as we learn about them.

Each student will be provided with a square of Velcro to attach their passport to the inside of their briefcase.

Center 2: Atlas Students will be provided with different atlases to look through and get familiar

with. They will be asked to complete a survey as they explore. When finished, work on the puzzles and trivia game included in atlas.

Center 3: Traveling Via iPad The app “sphere” and Google earth will be available to explore. I will ask them to look under “staff picks” “Landmarks” or “Sculptures” in sphere. In the favorites category there are images of Mexico, China, and Ireland, which

we will explore later in the unit for them to look at. Students will name 2 places they explored on Sphere or google maps and what

they could conclude about the culture at that location based on the image. (look at transportation, writing, weather, artwork, ect.)

Differentiation Students who learn visually will benefit from traveling via iPad and being able to

see these different areas we are going to be talking about. Tactile learners will benefit from the passport-making center and from being

able to work with the hard copy atlases.

Closure Teacher will bring class back together. Teacher will ask if there is anything the students’ feel should be added to their

culture web after they had the opportunity to explore the given resources. Formative/Summative Assessment

Teacher will observe students’ answers on what they think culture is to assess background knowledge.

Teacher will observe during centers to ensure rules are being followed and tasks are completed as asked.

Teacher will read surveys Materials

Center 2 Atlas

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be and why? Use your Atlas to explore the possibilities!

What did you like about the Atlas? Was there anything you didn’t like about it? If so, what?

What kind of information did you find in the Atlas? What did you learn about cultures?
