Mumbai, Dec 11England were 182/6 in theirsecond innings, trailing India by49 runs at stumps on day fourof the fourth Test here today.Captain Virat Kohli scored 235off 340 balls, his third doublehundred of the year. The home team made Englandchase leather for more than 12hours when replying to thevisitors’ first innings score of400 before being dismissed forthe third-highest score againstthe same opponents, 48minutes after lunch, on day fourat the Wankhede Stadium here.England, pushed to the wall, were struggling to save thegame and were tottering at teawith captain Alastair Cook (18),debutant fellow-opener KeatonJennings (0) and Ali (0) beingthe batsmen dismissed. Cook’swicket was Jadeja’s 100 scalpin Tests.

England 182/6 at stumps, trailing India by 49 runs

Root was at the crease afterthe visitors lost Moeen in thesecond ball of the last overbefore the break to RavindraJadeja, caught in the leg trap, after the left arm spinner hadtrapped Cook leg before.Bhuveneshwar Kumar trappedJennings leg before to start theprocession. Earlier Kohli, whobatted for more than eight anda half hours from yesterdaymorning, struck one six and 25

fours in a monumental 340-ballessay to make the highest scoreby an Indian skipper and alsohis third double ton this year, ina five-month period, as well ascareer. With Yadav, whobecame the first Indian batsmanto hit a century at number nineby making a fine 204-ball 104in 244 minutes with 15 hits tothe fence, Kohli — who hasbeen in imperious form in theseries, also created a new

national eighth wicket recordpartnership of 241 that came atnear run a minute. Theirpartnership of 241, thatconsumed 244 minutes and352 balls, obliterated India’sprevious best for the wicket of161 set by MohammedAzhauddin and Anil Kumble, the current head coach, in1996-97 against South Africaat Kolkata. This also eclipsedthe previous highest eighth-wicket partnership of 168between the two countriesstanding in the name ofEngland’s Ray Illingworth andP Lever at Old Trafford,Manchester in 1971.Brief scores: England 400 and182/6 in 47.3 overs (Root 77,Bairstow batting 50; Ashwin 2/49, Jadeja 2/58). India 631 allout in 182.3 overs (Kohli 235,Jayant 104, Vijay 136; Rashid4/192).
