his message on World
Tuberculosis Day, Shri
Mukherjee said, TB
continues to be one of the
major health challenges of
India. He said, India today
is better prepared to fight
TB than ever before and it
is capable of effective
intervention and
possesses advanced
technologies for
diagnosis, treatment and
care of TB. He said, during
the period from 2012 to
2017, the Revised National
Tuberculosis Control
Programme screened over
42 million individuals and
more than 7 million patients
were administered
treatment.
Yesterday, the delegates of
Global Coalition Against
TB called on the President
at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
World Tuberculosis Day is
observed on 24th March to
commemorate the day in
1882 when Dr. Robert Koch
discovered the TB bacillus.
Tuberculosis is one of the
top 10 causes of
death across the
globe, ranking above
HIV and malaria.
According to the World
Health Organization in
2015, there were 10.4
million new cases of TB
worldwide.

CIARI to come out with
result oriented plans for the
growth of Horticulture.
The farmers have to be
motivated to go for
horticulture crops apart
from the areca nut
cultivation, he observed.

up the Mental Healthcare
Bill 2016 for discussion
post-lunch. The bill seeks
to provide for mental
healthcare and services for
persons with mental illness
and to protect and fulfil the
rights of such person
during the delivery of
mental healthcare.
Speaking on the Bill, Health
Minister Shri J P Nadda
said that the bill is
progressive in nature and
patient centric. He said that
the bill gives a person
with mental illness right
to equality, confidentiality
and to have all
medical records.
Shri Nadda said the
unique feature of the
bill is that it has got
provision of advance
directive. If a person thinks
that mental illness may
happen to him, he can
direct about his treatment
and nominate a
representative.

amount of Rs. 02.64 Crores
towards VRS
compensation, gratuity,
bonus, salary etc. payable
to ex- workers of Andaman
Timber Industr ies,
Bambooflat were due
for payment since 2001-
2002.

He said onethird of the world's population is infected with TB Bacilli (almost 2 billion) and 30% of theworld's TB population is in India. In 2012, 9 million people have been detected with activeTB cases while 1 ½ million people died from TB in 2012 including 74,000 children. In India,40% of the population is infected with TB while recent study shows that 44% of TB patientsare suffering from Diabetes.He also explained about DOTS treatment which is aimed at early diagnosis and regulartreatment of tuberculosis to stop the spread of the disease. He advised patients to dosputum examinations to rule out TB cases which are being done free of cost at GovernmentSputum microscopy centre. He also informed that in the month of June, a house to housesurvey to rule out TB cases will be carried out in Nicobar District. He informed aboutCBNAAT machines which are installed at Hospitals in Mayabunder, Port Blair, Car Nicobarand Nancowry for carrying out TB tests and urged all to make use of the facility. He calledupon the people of the Islands to come forward and unite for the cause of eliminating TBfrom A&N Islands by 2025.
