FOREI'iORD
Manifolding the present booklet more than
30 years after its first appearance is in
answer to the wishes of those Bellonese
who play an active role in the Church today,
and of those who participated in the introduction of Christianity to their island,Bellona (Mungiki), in 1938. Another purpose
of the re-publication is to prevent a his
torical document like this from disappearing.
During the very few weeks of struggle
connected with the conversion to Christianity
and in the years immediately after, liThe
Songbock in the Language of Bellcna and
Rennell" played an important role. After the
hymns had become the possession of nearly
everybody on the island, they suddenly were
abandoned in 19~9 when a Melanesian missionary
of the Seventh-day Adventists resided on the
island for several months. He was called Gela
by the Bellonese. He strongly objected, for
unknown reasons, to singing the hymns in
the vernacular. Nowadays these songs are
on the verge of being forgotten.
The translation of the religious songs
from English and the language of Marovo
(New Georgia Island, British Solomon Islands)
into the language of Rennell, was done by the
extremely skillful Rennellese Moa. He under
took this very difficult task after only a
few months' training at the SDA-mission
station at Batuna in the Marovo Lagoon in
1937 (perhaps at the beginning of 1938).As it will appear from the translation he
possessed a surprising and admirable in
tuition and empathy for the new language,
religion and culture. The result of his
effort is nothing less than a remarkable
deed if one takes into consideration that
Moa was brought up within a totally differ
ent culture on a small island, Rennell, which
until 1938 had been almost isolated from the
outside world.
From a linguistic as well as from a
cultural - historical point of view this
booklet is of special interest. It is the
.rirst translation of Western religious songs
and concepts into Rennellese; at the same time
it is a document showing a native Rennellese'
spontaneous phonetic experience of his own
language. By translating these songs into his
own vernacular, Moa did the first step towards
the creation and development of a written
language, which the islanders did not have be
fore. More than 20 years past before profession
al linguistic research was conducted on the
Rennellese language. This was undertaken by
professor, dr. phil. h.c. Samuel H. Elbert
from the University of Hawai1i who this year
is publishing the first "Dictionary of the
Language of Rennell and Bellona."
Since it is a re-publishing of a historical
work the orthography as invented by Moa has been
kept despite the fact some of the words ac
cording to the phonetical principles, as pointed
out by Elbert, nowadays may be written in a
different way. Elbert advises one to write
lolongi (tired, weak) instead of thothongi;
'ao (day) instead of ao; laamonga (island, land)
instead of amonga. Likewise misprints are
retained in the present edition such as hako
ngongo instead of hakagongo. The same is true
with spelling inconsistencies, as when a word
like ngatahi (all, to be together) sometimes
has been written in two words as nga tahi. Ascompared to the original edition one change
has been done in the present booklet. This is
the addition of the references to the denomi
national hymnals of the Seventh-day Adventists,
which are to be found on the last pages.
I would like to express my thanks to all
those who have contributed to the possibility
of re-publishing liTe Book Taugua 0 te Hegeu7
ngaa Mugiki ma Mugaba". A special thank to
pastor Hatingeba from Ngongona village on
Bellona who kindly lent me the only copy of
the booklet which was left on the island.
Thanks also to the Danish Seventh-day Advent
ists who kindly assisted in getting the exact
references to the English texts of the hymns.
