The Great Big Crunch is a special
day of good food education,
ending with a massive,
synchronized bite into a crunchy
apple to celebrate. In 2014,
we're crunching on Thursday,
March 6 at 2:30pm E.S.T. Visit

The Great Big Crunch
“More than 1.37 million Canadians
have heart disease. It is also one of
the leading causes of death in
Canada, claiming more than
49,000 lives per year.” However,
there are several contributing
factors that can be controlled
including lack of exercise, an
unhealthy diet and stress.

Winter Walk Day is taking place on
Wednesday, February 5, 2014 right across
Canada. It is a great time to remind school
communities that walking is a physical activity
that can take place during all four seasons of
the year. Not only does this form of
transportation engage students in physical
activity, it is also an opportunity for them to
socialize with friends and increase awareness
of daily and seasonal changes in their
community. Curricular connections can be
made to Health and Physical Education
Overall Expectation A1 as once students are
in class, they can explore factors that
contribute to their enjoyment and
participation in physical activities. (The
Ontario Curriculum, Health and Physical
Education (revised), Grades 1-8, 2010). Visit
the Active and Safe Routes to School website

Program in collaboration with the
Ontario Wheelchair Sports
Association (OWSA) in January 2014
that will be offered to 80-100
Ontario-based elementary, middle
and high schools at no cost.
The Schools Program is a legacy
initiative of the 2014WWWBC

students about the sport of
wheelchair basketball and
encourage youth, with or without a
disability, to be physically active.
A demonstration team will visit
participating schools leading up to
the 2014WWWBC to teach students
about wheelchair basketball and
invite students and teachers to give
it a try.
Schools will also be encouraged to
attend the 2014WWWBC event
from June 20th - 28th.
