Above + Beyond Cancer’s Journey to the High Himalaya: Creative Nonfiction Narratives of Recovery, Discovery, and Advocacyfeaturing Ruth Bachman and Andy Fleming

Thursday, March 7, Cowles Library Reading Room, 7:30 p.m.

Above + Beyond Cancer (A + BC) is a public charity with a mission to reduce the burden of cancer across the globe. The organization pursues this mission through a team of internally developed “super-advocates” who leverage their creative talents as writers, filmmakers, musicians, lobbyists, fundraisers, and speakers to provide a uniquely engaging and inspirational approach to cancer advocacy. One of the goals of A+BC is to help participants who have journeyed with the foundation turn their experiences with cancer, and beyond cancer, into stories that help educate and advocate.

Drake has partnered with the A+BC foundation in a Community Writing Project that helps create and promote these narratives through writing workshops, community readings, a collection of team narratives, and, eventually, a published anthology of essays about the nature of survivorship and caregiving. These narratives are part of an ongoing Drake and A+B Cancer Community Writing Project. Writers will read from the creative nonfiction narratives inspired by their recent trek through the High Himalaya with Above + Beyond Cancer.

This event is free and open to the public.
