InformationaboutlivecontestsattheTCCJA2010conventionisbelow.Advisersshouldreviewthisinformationwithstudentsbeforehand.Studentsareresponsible

forbringingallneededequipmentwiththem.

Participantsshouldbringthefollowing:

TheirownReportersNotebooksorothernotebooksandpens/pencils,fortakingnotes.Reportersandphotographerswillbestandingduringthelive

event.

Personallaptopcomputers,ifavailable,withwordprocessingsoftware(Wordispreferred).Laptopsshouldbefullycharged(incasethecontestant

iswritinginanareawithoutpowersources).Remindstudentstobringanypowercordsnecessaryfortheirlaptops;nonewillbeavailable.Studentsinwritingcontestswhodonotbringalaptopwillhaveaccesstocomputersin

TheShorthornoffice.IfthetotalnumberofpersonallaptopsandShorthorncomputersavailableforthecontestsislessthanthenumberofstudentsin

writingcontests,somestudentswilluseabluebook(tobeprovidedbyUTA).

Reportersandeditorialwritersusingcomputerswilltransfertheirworktoaflashdrive,providedbyUTA,andgiventojudges.

Photographersshouldbringtheirowndigitalequipment.Lensesandotherequipmentwillnotbeprovided.Photographerswillreviewtheirphotoson

theircamerasandeachwillselectoneimagetobetransferredrawtoacard

readerthatacceptsallcardsexceptMicroSDs.AnystudentusingMicroSDmustbringhisorherownadaptorstouse.Photoswillbeimportedin

Photoshop,CS4.

Additionalrulesandguidelines:

Atthecontestsite,allcontestantswillbegiveninstructionsabouthowtosaveandname/labeltheirwork.

Duringthecontest,contestantsmaynotcommunicatewithpeoplewhoarenotinvolvedinthecontest.

NEWSandEDITORIALWRITERS:EntriestypedinWordarepreferred.

ParticipantsshouldbringlaptopsorplantouseUTAequipmenttoproducetheirwork.Handwrittenentrieswillbeallowedonlyiftheyaremorecontestantsthan

computers.

Newswriting:Newsstorieswillbejudgedonandshouldreflectthefollowing:

soundnewsjudgmentbasedonthenewsevent;accuracyofinformation;aclear,

conciseledeandnutgraph;fairrepresentationofstakeholders;writteninnews

articleform,andresourcefulnessofthereporter.Thearticleshouldcontainminimal

APstyle,spellingandgrammarerrors.Thenewsstoryshouldnotcontainthe

writersopinionorunattributedmaterial.

Editorialwriting:Editorialswillbejudgedonthefollowing:aclear,concisestatementofargumentinthebodyoftheeditorial;writtentorepresenttheopinion

ofthestudentspublication(notapersonalopinion);includesrelevantfactstosupportthestatedargument,andshouldcontainminimalAPstyle,spellingand

grammarerrors.Participantsshouldsubmiteditorials,notpersonalcolumns.

Editorialwriters,inwritinganeditorialtoreflecttheirpublicationratherthantheir

personalcommentary,shouldtakecarenottoincludetheirtruecollegesnameor

theirpublicationsnameintheirentry,sincethatcouldunintentionallyidentifythe

contestant.Atthecontest,theymaybegiventhenameofacollegeor/orpublication

touseintheeditorial.

Newsphotography:Newsphotographyentrieswillbejudgedonthefollowing:technicalquality(focus,exposure,etc.),impact,newsvalue,andinformationprovidedbythephotoandcutline;technique;subjectmatter;onthespottiming;

andresourcefulnessofthephotographer.Eachphotographerwillsubmitoneraw,uneditedimageandcutlineforthatimage.

Thephotofillwillbesubmittedin.jpgor.tifformat.Imageswillbedownloadedat

TheShorthornofficeinthephotoarea.

Thecontestswillbeginwiththeliveeventatapproximately9:30.Allwritingand

photoworkmustbecompletedby11:30a.m.

COPYEDITINGRULES:Copyeditingparticipantswilleditoneormorestoriesthatwillbejudged

basedonthefollowing:APstyle,wordusage,generalknowledgeandsentence

editing.Contestantsalsowillwriteaheadlineforatleastoneofthestories,whichwillbejudgedaspartofthecontest.Copyeditingparticipantsmaybringandusean

APstylebookandshouldbringtwopencils.(Alleditingmustbedoneinpencil.)

Thecontestwillbeginat10a.m.mustbecompletedwithintwohours.

PREPARATIONOFENTRIESContestantswillbegivenadditionalinstructionsforsavingandsubmittingtheir

entriesatthetimeofthecontest.Allentrieswillbesubmittedwithacontestant

number(notname)thatwillbeprovidedtoeachcontestantatthecontestsite.ThecontestantsnameandcollegeSHOULDNOTappearasapartofanyentry.Including

eithermayleadtodisqualificationoftheentry.
