1 INTRODUCTION

Premise in association with VEE Design were commissioned by Townsville City Council to investigate sites for and to undertake a concept design for a

water play park within the Riverway Complex. The water play park promotes and caters to family and toddler activities.

2 CONCEPT DESIGN

The team along with officers from Council undertook a review of the Riverway site and identified several potential sites. A multi-criteria analysis was

undertaken – see Landscape Analysis Report Appendix B. The report identified the advantages and disadvantages of the various sites, and from that the

preferred site was recognised as Site 2 with a connection to the current lower level pool.

A concept design has been prepared on the understanding that the splash pool was to be attractive to toddlers and families. Emphasis was placed on

interactive play areas as well as having large areas available for informal seating and viewing of the play activities. Interactive play areas were also seen

as an important part of the design and with an emphasis on colour and water.

The concept design is shown in Appendix 1.

WELCOME TO THE RIVERWAY BILLABONG

After visiting the potential sites available, Vee inds site 02 (refer attached analysis report, appendix 01) to have the greatest potential for the design and construction of a new water park within the Riverway precinct.

We ind this area to have the strongest connection to existing infrastructure. This largely includes the all abilities playground that could seamlessly be integrated into the new design. Binding both the existing playground with the newly proposed water park, will combine and activate the two zones, creating a large multifunctional space.

Furthermore, the connection with the existing lagoon will cohesively join the two water play zones, making the new water park feel larger than if sited else where at Riverway.

Perhaps the greatest asset that site 02 possesses, is the existing mature rain trees (Samanea saman) with their large over aching canopies. Data from the 2004 Strand Water Park Survey Results indicates; that more shade is the biggest request to improved the Strand water park. This existing natural shade is an asset and with smart design, can be cleverly incorporated to maximise shade through out the new water park.

The most successful play environments are those that connect people to place. Environments that are designed through inspiration from local legends; local stories; local natural landscapes and local cultures.

The Riverway precinct has a signiicant connection with the surrounding natural environment. We at Vee see the value of bespoke design over “of the shelf” water play equipment. Such design connects the community with the park, whilst creating an iconic landmark that attracts the wider community to the area.

The direct connection to the Ross River is a source of inspiration that should be explored. Using this natural feature, alongside Mount Stuart to inluence the design, detailing and play value of the water park.

key considerations:

• passive zones for sunbathing, picnicing & group gathering

• maximises the existing under-utilised shaded grass areas

• provide adequate passive zones imediately adjacent to the water play

• passives zones to be easily accessable from major & minor pathways, but not to hinder circulation

key considerations:

• to provide ample formal & informal seating opportunities within & immediately around the water play

• utilise the seating walls & pliths for containment and to minimise children running through the water play

• utilise seating walls to protect planting & reduce people walking through planter beds.

After visiting the potential sites available, Vee inds site 02 to have the greatest potential for the design and construction of a new water park within the Riverway precinct.

We ind this area to have the strongest connection to existing infrastructure. This largely includes the all abilities playground that could seamlessly be integrated into the new design. Binding both the existing playground with the newly proposed water park, will combine and activate the two zones, creating a large multifunctional space.

Furthermore, the connection with the existing kids pool will cohesively join the two water play zones, making the new water park feel larger than if sited else where at Riverway.

Environments that are designed through inspiration from local legends; local stories; local natural landscapes

and local cultures.

The Riverway precinct has a signiicant connection with the surrounding natural environment. We at Vee see the value of bespoke desing over “of the shelf” water play equipment. Such design connects the communtiy with the park, whilst creating an iconic landmark that attracts the wider community to the area.

The direct connection to the Ross River is a source of inspiration that should be explored. Using this natural feature, alongside Mount Stuart to inluence the design, detailing and play value of the water park.

Site 02 with its close proximity to existing infrastructure, existing shade and close ingegration of required plant ofers the most cost efective option.

Base on our exerience and utilisation of existing infrastructure and shade provisions, we anticipate a budget between $2.25 million and 3 million would be suient to deliver an internatinal standard bespoke water play environment at Rverway.

Explore design ideas together with the stakeholders, testing and reining the design.

Arrive at a preferred concept design or design options that can be presented back to the community for their endorsement and support. These would include design sketches, artist sketches and images to clearly communicate how the ideas can be translated into an integrated design solution for their water play facility.

Reinement of the concept design following the stakeholders comments, ensuring best practice hydraulic and engineering design has been considered.

Prepare reined design package including estimates of probable costs and ongoing operational considerations & costs; for approval by Local Government.

Presentation of inal design back to the local stakeholders to demonstrate reined design outcomes.
