B. Preview the PASSAGE1. Underline the title.2. Circle the headings.3. Number the paragraphs or sections, or circle

them if they’re already labeled.4. Study the pictures. Connect them to the

title and headings of the passage.5. Predict the passage based on the title,

pictures, questions, and headings. “I predict this passage will [SPIED] me by telling me ____________.” Write it down.

1. Read the question, double underline skill words, add thinking tools if possible, single underline other important words.

2. Put a by the questions for which you’ll need to refer back to the passage. add your own knowledge of skills using arrows + skill title.

4. Use the questions to help you set your purpose for reading.

Read with an eye for inference and rules

1. Underline keys to each paragraph.• Write a super simple main idea beside each or when

hits you.

2. Add inferences and thinking tools as you go.

3. Look for rules. Note the following: • SPIED + Modes clues • Text Structure clues • Perspective + Plot

Elements (if a story)• Circle errors (if a student draft)

4. Write a simple summary • One sentence or so explaining the main idea of

the passage, referring to your prediction.

As you answer the questions…

1. Refer back to the passage for all questions you starred and others you missed.

- Aside from grammar questions, all question answers depend on information found in the passage or inferences made based upon the passage.

2. Eliminate at least one answer choice. Be wary of eliminating three answers. Stick to two.

3. Circle your answer then bubble. 4. If you’re unsure, circle the question

number and add the question to your go back and check list if necessary. Answer the question for now, but come back to it.
