The approach is to explore the concepts and methods of TQM developed initially in the USA and subsequently further developed in Japan; to examine more recent developments, including the extension of TQM into the service sector, and to provide a basic understanding of the philosophical, analytical and statistical bases of TQM methodology together with some experience(s) of using that methodology. 2 LEARNING OUTCOMES The objective of this subject is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of quality management and its importance to business in the competitive environment. 1 SUBJECT DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this subject is to provide the student with an understanding of how an organisation can successfully make the transition to Total Quality Management. The approach is to explore the concepts and methods of TQM developed initially in the USA and subsequently further developed in Japan; to examine more recent developments, including the extension of TQM into the service sector, and to provide a basic understanding of the philosophical, analytical and statistical bases of TQM methodology together with some experience(s) of using that methodology.

2 LEARNING OUTCOMES

OUTLINE AND REQUIREMENTS

Building and sustaining high performance organisations is a critical success factor for both services and manufacturing. Effective quality management can underpin organisational success. From this position you are required to focus on studying any business/ organization and analyzing how they are applying Quality Management (QM) principles to make themselves more profitable and/or increase their competitive advantages. The report should cover the following issues: A. Review how quality management frameworks can generally contribute to the business or organisation’s success. B. With a focus on management and technical systems, identify and critically analyse how quality management frameworks are applied by the organization. C. Six sigma quality management is considered to be the next step in the evolution of quality management. Comment on the benefits and problems that will face the organization with its future application.

5.3 GRADES AWARDED

The approved grades of performance and associated ranges of marks for postgraduate subjects are: High Distinction (HD) Distinction (D) Credit (C) Pass (P) Fail (F) Technical Fail (TF)

85 – 100% 75 – 84% 65 – 74% 50 – 64% 0 – 49% - Not meeting the final exam passing requirements

5.4 SATISFACTORY COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS In order to gain a grade of Pass (P) or better in this subject, students must pass the Final Examination with a mark of at least 40%. This is irrespective of a student's other marks during the session. Students who obtain a composite mark of greater than 50% but do not satisfy the Final Examination pass requirements will be awarded a “Technical Fail”. Students must ‘reasonably’ complete all assessment tasks (other than the Final Examination,

which requires a mark of 40% of above) and submit these by the final week of session or by the Final Examination date (whichever is earlier) in order to pass the subject. ‘Reasonable’ completion of an assessment task will be determined based on the instructions given to the student including: word length, demonstration of research and analysis where required, the Plagiarism Policy, and completion of each section/component of the assessment. Failure to ‘reasonably’ complete any assessment tasks to the standard specified above may result in a Fail grade awarded for the subject.
