• It was President Abraham Lincoln who made the following sage observation: “The man who is incapable of making a mistake is incapable of anything.”

• Researchers at Harvard University once de-cided to test several varieties of Coca-Cola to determine their effectiveness, if any, as a sper-micide. The results? Diet Coke was the most effective, while New Coke was the least. Upon hearing of the tests, a representative for the company issued the following statement: “We do not promote Coca-Cola for medical purpos-es. It is a soft drink.”

• The minnow has teeth, but they’re not in its mouth; they’re found in the throat.

• Ever wonder where we get the term “blurb” to

indicate a short summary or promotional piece accompanying a creative work? At a trade association dinner in 1907, author Gelett Burgess presented attendees with a limited edition of one of his books. It was customary to have a brief summary included on the dust jacket of such books, along with a picture of an attractive wom-an. Burgess followed this custom – with a twist. On the cover of his piece was an image of a woman with her hand held to her mouth, as if shouting. The caption for this image was “Belinda Blurb, in the act of blurbing,” and bold letters at the top of the dust jacket declared, “Yes, this is a Blurb!” The name stuck.

• On an average day in the United States, there will be 10 reported UFO sightings.

Citrus LabelsQ: I have collected citrus labels for at

least 30 years. Most are from California. The artwork and bright, splashy colors first attracted me to this field of collect-ing. Since I have some duplicates, can you recommend a collector or group I can contact? -- Jim, Cedar City, Utah

A: Your labels were originally used to identify the contents of wooden crates being shipped to market. The colorful lithographs, especially those printed before 1950, have become extremely collectible. Most seem to be selling for less than $10 each, but as I often have said about collectibles, there are always exceptions. Noel Gilbert is secretary/treasurer of the Citrus Label Society, 131 Miramonte Drive, Fullerton, CA 92835; and www.citruslabelsociety.com.

• • •Q: I have a glass plate that has been

passed down through my family for several generations. It has an image of U.S. Grant with the text, “Let Us Have Peace.” It is yellowish-green in color. -- Wilmer, Rio Rancho, N.M.

A: Commemorative and politically themed plates were especially popular during the Victorian era. One of my favorite references for such items is “Political Collectibles: Identification and Price Guide” by Dr. Enoch L. Nappen. In addition to a U.S. Grant plate, I also found ones with images of Benjamin Harrison and James Garfield.

These plates are valued in the $75 to $100 range.

• • •Q: I have four magazines from the

1950s: “Playmate: The Favorite Mag-azine of Boys and Girls.” The issues contain puzzles, games, stories, color by number and even paper dolls. Inci-dentally, you could order this magazine at that time for $1.50 per year. What do you think they are worth? -- Beverly, Woodriver, Ill.

A: Your magazines are valued in the $7.50-$10 each range, depending, of course on condition and if they are intact.

• • •Q: I have a china cabinet that

originally belonged to my great-grandmother. During a recent move, the curved glass in a front panel was broken. I have checked with the glass replacement companies in my area and no one has curved glass in stock. Can you help me? -- Dorothy, Ches-terfield, Mo.

A: Contact B&L Antiquerie, Inc., 6217 S. Lakeshore Road, P.O. Box 453, Lexington, MI 28250; bentblasscen-tral.com; [email protected]; and 800-840-1140.

Hello Everyone! - hope all is well with you and yours. We have been busy as usual bringing our fun and free publication to all our readers, but last week was one of those - “Ok, what could be next?” type of weeks. Our Tidbits of the Lake Area Facebook friends have already seen a picture, but we wanted share what happened to Lynette on the evening of Sunday, July 14th with all of our readers... Lynette was just finishing a seven hour distribution loop and was on Hwy 15 headed north towards Milbank, and then home to Big Stone... well, that was the plan until a very large doe come out from the right side along the train tracks near the Labolt turn off at a full run and launched itself in front of her at 60 mph. The picture tells the story pretty well... the deer ended up airborn for about 40 feet where it landed on the edge of the corn field on the

opposite side of the highway. The car did what it was designed to do and absorbed the impact, and Lynette was able to bring it to a stop safely. She was pretty shook up and stiff and sore, but OK.

We log a lot of miles bringing Tidbits to our very large distribution area and Lynette and I do the bulk of the work... from ad sales to design/layout/editing to distribution to accounting to taking out the trash can and everything in between.... all in effort to keep our advertising options very affordable and giving our readers the maximum free entertainment value possible while making the paper accessible, but not intrusive. But the law of averages comes into play with as many road miles as we put on.

So... about the “Ok, what could be next?” reference. As you see below, the other vehicle, our Ford F150 truck, isn’t looking so good either. 72 hours after Lynette’s deer incident, our son, bless his heart, took the truck to go fishing at one of the local quarry holes and ran into - guess what - some granite rocks and rendered it undriveable. Three days, two vehicles totaled... “Ok, what could be next?”.

On the upside, our insurance company is taking good care of us, no one got injured and... if you are reading this... we made another deadline. Thanks for reading and always remember, we would like to hear from you also, Tidbits is an open forum, send us a picture with a caption, or share a joke - if I use it in Tidbits I’ll give you thank you in the paper. So, keep reading and we really hope you enjoy our entertainment paper.

Sean Athey, owner, publisher

I would just like to say Thank You To Everyone for your concern, compassion and your prayers. I am a little stiff, sore and emotional, but I hope to get back to work SOON and on my regular schedule with another “Tidbits-mobile”.

I love to bring Tidbits to our readers, and the interaction with them is wonderful, they let me know how much they love Tidbits, and I know we have a lot of new readers, too! I will be back on schedule, so we can get back to work getting your town’s events, and information from local businesses and services to our readers.

Thank you for reading our fun, family-friendly and free publication, and thank you so much for picking up your Tidbits each week. I hope you learn a bit, laugh a bit and tell them you saw it in Tidbits.

God bless and please stay safe out there.

~ Lynette Athey
