This is my first time to have an honor to greet you as a new General Manager of the Tbilisi Marriott & Courtyard by Marriott Hotels. Therefore I am gladly sharing my excitement about our recent innovations and changes with all our loyal customers and readers.

In this edition we will continue updating you with all the highlights that took place in our hotels within the last couple of months. We are pleased to offer our guests renovated lobby concept – the Majestic Lounge & Bar and The Patio. Hotel chain Marriott has a new General Manager - George Togonidze - young, full

of enthusiasm and well-experienced professional. This innovation was followed by

several major changes at Tbilisi Marriott Hotel. We talked about those improvements.

Mr. George Togonidze started his career at the Tbilisi Marriott Hotel in 2004 as Director of Sales & Marketing. Three years later he moved to Warsaw with the same status. After a year, he returned to Tbilisi. To-day Mr. Togonidze is a new General Manager of Tbilisi Marriott Hotel & Courtyard by Marriott Tbilisi –with new plans and ideas.

The most French Spanish, Pablo Picasso, visited Georgia with an “exchange program” this year. The exposition of Picasso’s pieces of art in Pirosmani’s land was planned by Georgian National Museum and the General Council of Department of Yonne, France. The ar-rangement included the most significant detail for the visitors - the georgarphic aerial of the exhibition. Pablo Picasso’s work of art was exposed in Tbilisi, Sighnaghi and Batumi.

The route of Picasso’s “journey” started with Sighnaghi. The “City of Love” hosted 40 expositions of the great artist on May 30. The collec-tion, brought in Georgia, left the French city of Vesele at Yonne district. Lithonography, linocuts and paintings that come from the private collection of Christian Zervos, one of the first cataloguers of Picasso’s work, were specially visiting Georgia for local audience.Zervos Museum is one of the most significant artistic centers of France. It is allocated in a household of a famous French writer Romen Rolan (1866-1944). The museum hold artistic pieces of

Picasso, Calder, Jakomet, Ernst, Helion, Miro, Kandinski and other well-known painters.Exhibition of Niko Pirosmani was also opened there last year. Af-ter that it became possible to bring Pablco Picasso’s exposition to Georgia.

Picasso in the City of Love

Sighnaghi awaited Pablo’s paintings for a long time. Tbilisi bohemia, officials and businessmen gathered for the opening the noisiest and unique exhibition. Everybody agreed that Picasso’s arrival to Georgia was for Pirosmani’s sake and such an important “cultural” exchange was executed with help of Nikala. That is why one of the most frequent statements was “Thanks a lot to Pirosmani.”

“Today is a very sudden and amazing day. Exactly two years ago we were just starting the renovation of the museum, and now we are hosting works of great Pablo Picasso here. It is a dream come true. This grand and unprecedented exhibition will be followed by a grand ap-preciation in Georgia as well as in international society. This is a very important project for Sighnaghi and our aim to turn the city into a cultural center has become a reality in some way. Sighnaghi is no lon-ger a monument only; a lot is going on here. And the Picasso exhibi-tion is the best indicator of that. Here are the exponents that were kept in a private collection of Zervos. Alan Rickman paid his third visit in Georgia. Together with him prominent British actress Geraldine Mcewan, Ms. Margo Annet, author of a major guidebook for British dra-ma schools and Rima Horton arrived to Robert Sturua’s home country. The voyage was determined for two events at the same time. The first one was Sturua’s new theater opus – “Bidermann and Fire Raisers” and the Oxford the-atre society tour on Rustaveli Theatre stage.

Organizer of the tour was famous theater producer Thelma Holt, which is also busy with producing Sturua in UK. Holt was the first person who tied up relations between Sturua and Rickman. In 1991 in London Rickman played in Sturua’s “Hamlet” and was ac-claimed as one of the top five Hamlets in the world.

However, Rickman knew about Georgia much before working with Sturua, moreover, he had already been in Tbilisi. To the end of 70s of the last century British performance “Brother Karamazovs” was presented in Soviet Union. The conceptual play participating four artists, Rickman among them, was let to the Metekhi Theatre stage. Since that time Rickman kept close relations with Georgia.

Rickman decided to try himself on stage after graduating from graphic design department at Royal College of Arts and launched graphic design company together with his friends. At his 26, Rickman gained scholarship at Royal Academy of Dra-matic Arts (RADA). Later on he switched on directing. Successful career on stage drew attention of many film direc-tors. “Die Hard” opened his way to the world popularity. It was followed by “Robin Hood – King of Thieves,” “Harry Potter,” “Sense and Sensibility,” “Dogma,” “Truly, madly, deeply” by Anthony Minghella and etc. Regardless the world-acclaimed screen char-acters Mr. Rickman keeps staying devoted to the theater and even has refused to some film directors but never regretted it. In Tbilisi Rickman said, “Film is fun, theater is religion”.

However, Alan Rickman has won prizes at BAFTA, and interna-tional festivals of Venice, Chicago, Brussels, Montreal and Seattle. Furthermore, he is the owner of Emmy, Golden Globe and Golden Satellite, also awards by London Critics Circle Film Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards and some more. The Empire Magazine se-lected him twice (1995, 1997) as one of 100 sexiest male stars in film history.

I can not look at myself on screen…

Despite the world recognition Rickman finds himself embarrassed when talking about his roles, “I can not look myself on a screen. That happens only when my producers and the studio urge me to go there on premiere. I’m sitting in the hall, looking at my-self on a huge screen, an idiot who acts awful and I feel like in hell”, when saying it, Mr. Rickman laughs and embarrassed hides his face with hands. The artist does not recognize neither his tal-

ent not success. He is even surprised with the fact that directors choose him.

“I never think about success, I always remember all the worst that happened to me during my career”.

- How do you feel spectators’ reactions, as it is so important for the actor?- If perceiving as a success my effect on the viewers and energy that I receive back from them, than I can say that have felt this feeling several times and yes, that’s really important. His trade mark is his voice. Alan Rickman is often called as “Mister Voice.” Rickman says that his voice is partly the merit of his genetics and meaningfully to his huge work on it.

All that artist needs is keen eye. I’ve trained it while my study in arts school. In my directing

“In academy teachers used to tell that my voice sounds like as if I talk through rain pipe and it was not the compliment. Later I could correct it. The voice is like instrument, with a single dis-parity that it is always with you and you should be taking care of it all the time.”

Directing is a hard Profession

Alan Rickman got also interested in directing. He debuted as a film director in 1997. “The Winter Guest” (starring Emma Thompson and Phylida Law) was nominated in number of festivals, Venice Film Festival among them and won five prizes at all. Later in 2007 the film came out a reason of Rickman’s second visit to Georgia. With the initiative and support of British-Georgian Cultural Plat-form, UK Embassy to Georgia and British Councils the film was screened for Georgian audience for the first time. Success came to Rickman’s performances on stage as well. “My name is Rachel Corrie” staged in London 2005, received Theatrego-ers’ Choice Awards for Best Director and Best New Play. His “Credi-tors” directed and staged in 2008 also received positive recalls.

“This is a play about the time when marriage dies. It is nice, funny and a bit hard,” Rickman said.

- You’re a successful man, you were designer, then became suc-cessful artist and director, and don’t you recognize it? - All that artist needs is keen eye. I’ve trained it while my study in arts school. In my directing practice my artistic experience helped me a lot and also I do not exclude that my directing abili-ties are recall of my past as graphic designer. I think all they are tied up with each other.

“It’s hard to be a director,” says Rickman and remembers his first rehearsal as a director, “It’s common, when actors listen to a new director, in three minutes they think you are another idiot and that they have to rescue him.”

- Is it difficult to work with actors? - I confess it’s really a very hard process. I never pretend myself as if I know everything. It is not a shame if director says that he doesn’t know anything. On the contrary, to my mind the shame is to hide it.

Oxford University Dramatic Society and Thelma Hold in Rustaveli Theatre

With the support of British Empire Commander Ms. Thelma Holt together with Alan Rickman Oxford University Dramatic Society (OUDS) troupe toured in Tbilisi. On Rustaveli Theatre small stage the troupe presented “Henry V” by William Shake-spear. The play at the same time opened a new season of Shakespear plays on Georgian stage.

The Oxford University Dramatic Society is the wonderful are-na for students. The former members of the society include such prominent British theater actors as Maggie Smith, Sam Mendes, John Schlesinger, Tony Richardson and etc.

Thelma Holt: She is a producer of the Royal Shakespear Company (RSC), director council member and the honored lecturer at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA). Also Holt is busy to be the British producer of Robert Sturua. Her merits include Sturua’s famous performances (“Hamlet” starring Alan Rickman, “Three Sisters,” starring Vanessa, Lynn and Jemma Redgraves, and “The Seagull” participating Michael Sheen) staged in London and re-mained in British Theatre history as one of the best plays.

Freedom by Sturua

”Once I asked Sturua: how could you give so much freedom to the artists? He replied: First they should be in prison and then set free, in such a way freedom and discipline is possible and indeed it is hard but possible.”

He never tried to hide excitement from Sturua: “When I saw Richard III, I felt like my life changed after it and I was not the only person to say that. He is so extraordinary as a director. Since that time I dreamed of working with him and as you see sometimes dreams come true.”

Regarding his friendly feelings towards Georgia, Rustaveli Theater and personally to Sturua, Alan Rickman brought his share to the develop-ment of the theatre. His financial support made it available to realize Sturua’s new performance “Bidermann and Fire Raisers.” Premier of the same named Max Frisch play opened new season on Rustaveli The-atre stage in October.

Bolkvadze’s life is continuing in France where she actively cooper-ates with Michel Sogny’s foundation SOS Talent, which had a big influence on pianist’s professional development. Now Bolkvadze helps young and talented Georgian musicians herself.

- The year of 2009 started successfully for me. One of the radios recorded my CD in Switzerland. It includes several compositions that I performed at Cope Festival. - I met this wonderful pianist, Michel Sogny at Margarita Long festival in 2005 (She was awarded with the special prize for the best performer of French music). He is searching for unknown talents and helps them establish in musical world. Looking for talents is possible in different countries as well. Tedo Dia-konidze, from Kutaisi is the best example. He participated in Mezzo twice already; however we found this boy in a frozen hall in Kutaisi where he played on a permeable piano.

“Georgia is the richest country of musical traditions, but dreadful situation had a negative influence on it. Parisian audience is spoiled with high quality creative work and is comparably critical. I wish a better future for Georgian artists. I would take part in festivals outside Tbilisi with a great pleasure; moreover, I plan and discuss my concerts and programs myself.”
