The year is fast coming to an end and again we’re in the busiest but celebrative season. Here, on behalf of TBCS Board of Directors, we as a team would like to thank all the teachers, parents and students at TBCS for your hard-working and for sticking around for another year. We wish you all a happy and healthy New Year! Overall the school continues to grow as the larg- est Chinese school in the Bay area. We currently have 245 students, ages 4 to 17 enrolled in a total of 26 classes ranging from primary Chinese lan- guage, arts and dancing, to English reading and writing. We also experienced increasing number of admission applications from non-ethnic Chinese families and the enrollment from non-ethnic Chi- nese students have increased steadily year over year. Recently, the school was contacted by the Glazier Children’s Museum in Tampa to be in- volved in their planning for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration events at the museum. This is another indication that the TBCS has become one of the main anchors where the local commu- nity seeks to park their Chinese interests. Our teaching faculty is strong, steady, and diversi- fied, some of them having taught here for more than 10 years. Their experience, passion and dedi- cation have helped raise the quality of education and boost our school’s reputation. As a result, we’ve experienced unprecedented amount of in- terests in teaching at TBCS, local and afar. The increasing pool size of teaching talents has blessed us with the luxury of being selective when we interviewed our candidates. This is a win-win for the school and the community as teachers are the greatest assurance for our ability to continue pro- viding the best extra-curricular education for our community. This year, we bid farewell to some outstanding teachers who had taught at TBCS for years, such as Ms. Xue, Wei ,Ms. Li，Sharon,Ms. Wei, Fengming, and Ms. Yang, Penny. But we were also fortunate to have influx of new and re- turning talents to more than make up for the loss. Welcome back, Ms. White, Christine, Ms. Li, Li- hua, and welcome aboard，Ms. Liu, Christina，Ms. He, Yongzhi, Ms. Martin, Allison and , Ms. Yuan, Tina! We’re also grateful that we have a large base of supportive parents who, besides diligently sending their kids to school every Sunday, provide the invaluable vol- unteer services that the school desper- ately needed. Without parents’ persis- tence, discipline and sense of responsibil- ity, kids would be more than happy to disappear from our school. Many parents understand that sending their kids to learn Chinese at a centralized place like TBCS is not simply a Sunday routine. Besides learning a potentially useful for- eign language and culture, it is also a way of training and disciplining our kids to be more adaptive to challenges in their lives. Imagine, a child who is able to master the world’s most difficult language, what other obstacles won’t she or he be able to overcome in their lifelong learning path? The year is fast coming to an end and again we’re
in the busiest but celebrative season. Here, on
behalf of TBCS Board of Directors, we as a team
would like to thank all the teachers, parents and
students at TBCS for your hard-working and for
sticking around for another year. We wish you all
a happy and healthy New Year!
Overall the school continues to grow as the larg-
est Chinese school in the Bay area. We currently
have 245 students, ages 4 to 17 enrolled in a total
of 26 classes ranging from primary Chinese lan-
guage, arts and dancing, to English reading and
writing. We also experienced increasing number
of admission applications from non-ethnic Chinese
families and the enrollment from non-ethnic Chi-

参加2012年华文教师研习“欧美班”纪实 天帕湾中文学校教师 魏铁英
等。这里居住着26个少数民族，
服装式样，房子风格，小吃特点
等都迥异不同。这里还是热带植
物的金库。88米高的望天大树。
这里还有许多龙猴，500多头亚
洲大象。
这期学习班的学员分别来自欧
美15个国家，从事海外中文教育
的教师五十多人。在学习期间学
员们相互交流经验，相互学习，
也有了很大的收获。
我觉得在本期学习培训班开设
2012年八月我有幸参加了
在中国昆明市举办的“华文
教师研习“欧美班”的学
习。培训班是由国务院侨务
办公室主办。云南省侨务办
承办，云南海外文教中心，
云南华文学院协办。自2012
年8月2日至8月17日，历时15
天。开设了许多门课程，有
（小学语文阅读）（小学识
字教学）（心理学原理的应
用）（小学作文教学）（小
学教学技能技巧）（云南民
族文化概论，地域文化讲
座）（课堂才艺，剪纸，书
法，朗读艺术）等18门课。聘
请了云南师范大学（现华文学
院）的资深教授和当地重点小
学的优秀教师授课。授课内容
丰富多彩，形式多样，既有理
论又有实践。真使我们所有学
员受益匪浅。
云南之行还使我们亲眼看见
了我们祖国的边陲云南依山傍
水，风景秀丽，四季如春。还
有许多名胜古迹，如石林，大
观楼，西南联大的纪念碑，
高---一点一横长，口字在中
央，大口不封口，小口在中
央。
3.故事识字法：
熊---一只能干的小黑熊迈着4
条小腿高兴的向我走来。
游---游泳要到水里去，游泳
池是方形的，大人带孩子游。
4.运用生动有趣的游戏：

2.儿歌识字法：
渴，喝---渴了要喝水，喝水
要张嘴。

6.吹牛皮：
我的姐姐比我的弟弟小三
岁。昨天我吃了十三个西瓜。
明天我要去看十个小时的电

7.最好笑的句子;
A开火车，B送信，C贴树皮，D
找朋友，E配对子，
开火车：老师给一个字，让一
组同学挨个说，字，解，音，
结构，偏旁，谁说错了
火车就走不动了，修车再走。
送信：找一个同学当邮递员，
把生字送信到每一个同学手
中，请拿到信的同学上台领读
分析字形。
找朋友：找一些字形相同结
构的字，排列在一起，了解
学生是否记住了这些字形的
结构。

魏铁英老师自2001年就开始在本
校（前称USF 中文学校）执教，
是本校教龄最长的教师。这是魏

举行联席会议，商定了振华基金会操作章程，通过举手表

About Zhenhua Foundation
Zhenhua Foundat ion was establ ished in March 2012 with
the seed funds donated from the TBCS Board of Direc-
tor Chairman Mr. Howard Yu, TBCS Board director Mr. Li Yang, and a senior member of community member
Nancy Kau. The main goal of the foundat ion is to pro-
vide continuous f inancial resources to fund both the
Zhenhua Assistantship and Zhenhua Scholarship pro-
grams to the students enrol led at TBCS annually . The
Zhenhua Assistantship is a need-based program aiming
for those who want to study Chinese but have dif f icu lty
in paying tuit ions; and the Zhenhua Scholarship is a
merit -based program aiming for those competitive and
dedicated TBCS students who have continuously ex-
cel led in both regular and Chinese schools .
The Organization of the Foundation
The foundation is run under a dedicated Board of Di-
rectors pr imarily consist ing of current and former
TBCS off icia ls or community volunteers. The f irst
Board of Directors which was elected on April 8, 2012
consists of the fol lowing members:

How to Apply?
The Zhenhua Assistantship and Scholarship are to be
awarded at the end of each school year (normally in late
May or ear ly June). TBCS is now accepting the appl ica-
tions for school year 2012-2013. The deadl ine for sub-

我为什么学中文
彭正
我虽然出生在美国, 但我也是一名华人, 所以
我要学习中文和中华文化.
我的爸爸妈妈从中国来. 学好了中文, 我就能
和爸爸妈妈更好地交流.我开始上中文学校的时候,几
乎不会说中文. 现在我的中文水平有了很大提高, 我
经常和爸爸妈妈在家说中文.
我也很喜欢中文故事. 去年故事会, 我讲了盲
人摸象的故事. 这个故事不仅很好笑, 还告诉我们做
事情要全面地看问题, 不能只看一个部分.
我喜欢学中文还因为中文学校的老师上课很生
动有趣, 每个星期天来中文学校学中文是一件很快乐
的事.
今年9岁的彭正 (David Peng) 是振华基金会成立
以来第一个奖学金获得者。 他获奖时是TBCS四年级
学生； 这里登载的是他申请时按要求提交的作文，供

1st TBCS Student Talent Show 首届学生才艺秀
在徐净植校长的积极倡导下，经过广大师生，员工的共同努力和充分的筹备，天帕湾中文学校首届学
生才艺表演于今年五月二十日首次亮相。才艺表演穿插于第四届中文写作比赛发奖仪式间，可以说是
锦上添花，不仅活跃了气氛，增添了色彩，更重要的是，让我们看到本校学生多才多艺的一面，真是
欢欣鼓舞，令人感动。学中文难，写中文更难，我们这些可爱的同学们，学好了中文，交了作文，还
要在舞台上潇洒走一回，你说容易吗？所以，到中文学校学习，不是一件简单的事情，它提供了一个
让小孩们学会克服困难，锻炼意志，增加对中华文化的认识。而文化不是通过背课本学到的。穿着民
族服装，唱着中国歌曲，跳着民族舞蹈，这才是文化的切身经验。通过这样的才艺秀，我们期望学生
们感受到课堂外的另一番风景，从而增添学中文的乐趣。

Faculty News
While most of us enjoyed and celebrated coming of the Year of Dragon
relaxing at home, golfing at open, or having a short trip somewhere, some
of our faculty and students poured their hearts and energies into helping
the greater Tampa Bay Chinese New Year Gala held at Blake High School
on Saturday, January 20, 2012. Here, we would like to share their joys in
serving the community and thank them for their beautiful and tremendous
work in making the event a great success.
Our faculty members Ms. Xue, Wei (薛蔚老师), Ms. Hu, Yingbo (胡颖
博老师), Ms. Xin, Ren (信任老师), Ms. Wei, Fengming (韦凤鸣老师) and Dr. Linda Carroll all played key roles in organizing, directing, presiding
and marketing venues for the event and we’re all very proud of their ex-
traordinary talents outside their teaching duties at TBCS. It is also a great
pleasure to see the students from our school performed excellently at the
show; let’s give them big high fives!

天帕湾中文学校第四届中文作文大赛落下帷幕
天帕湾中文学校第四届作文大赛“我的爱好”，经过两
个多月的筹备、报名、比赛和评审后于五月初圆满结束。自从
第三届作文比赛以来，我们已经实行了网上评分，评委们的资
料已经存在学校的信息系统，竞赛组委会在把评委分组后，系
统就会自动给每个评委发出一份特定的email；当评委们看完
部分或全部参选作文时，就直接点击email中的网上评分链接
登录TBCS网站输入对每篇文章的分数。计分标准仍然沿用以往
的五项指标，“主题”，“词汇”，“语法”，“字迹”和“
效果”，各项指标各占20%。评委只需从限定的分数范围里选
一个数，系统就会自动即时算出总分；当所有的评委给出每篇
文章的总分后，系统自动去掉最高和最低分，平均下来的分数
就是文章的最终结果，同时竞赛的结果也就出来了。在没有这
套计分系统之前，组委会工作人员要花大量的时间在Excel
上不仅劳累不堪也容易出错，且拖慢竞赛结果的公布。
当然，评分计分只是赛事的一部分。扫描文章，编号，
发给每个评委，竞赛结果出来后编成册，等等环节还都是极其
费时吃力的；我们将继续改进这部分的流程，争取能有更多的
创新。

Parent Communication
On November 8, 2012, TBCS lost its dear member Ms. Zhang Zhiyun to breast cancer. Parents and teachers at the
school were deeply saddened by the news and wanted to help her surviving family, husband Xuelei, son Sean and
daughter Joanna Wang cope with this difficult time. On behalf of the TBCS Board of Directors and School Adminis-
trative Team, Mr. Yu, Hanhua and Mr. Yang, Shigang, along with many TBCS family members, attended the memory
service held on November 17, 2012 at the Tampa Chinese Presbyterian Church. At the end of the service, Mr. Yu
presented Mr. Wang the Letter of Tuition Waiver Certification from TBCS for waiving the Spring 2013 semester tui-
tions for their two children enrolled at the school.
Being a loving and dedicated mother and wife, Zhiyun was also an active volunteer for the TBCS
community. She will forever live in our memory!
