Incorrect testing method of Oxygen Sensors
robing of the O2, AFR, or Wideband sensor is sometimes needed in order to make a properP
diagnosis, however incorrect probing may create immediate, or future, problems. Although it
may be convenient to test the sensor, or sensor harness, on the vehicle with the sharp point of
a Digital Multimeter, or similar, doing this may cause irreversible damage to the integrity of the
circuit. The same damage can also be produced by the use of a t-pin or paperclip.
Potential codes may include:
PO135O2 Sensor 1/1 Heater Performance
PO132Bank 1 Sensor 1 High Voltage
PO036HO2S Heater Control Circuit
PO031Heater Control Circuit Voltage High
PO032Heater Control Circuit Voltage Low
With most engines and data systems being electronically controlled, most sensor data is readily
available via the data stream. Often when diagnosing heater failures or sensor performance,
one will need to probe the sensor harness for data acquisition. The most common failure occurs
while testing the heater circuit; on the other hand, while testing NTK sensors, the failure will
normally occur on the two white wires on the sensor, known as the heater circuit.

Connectors, such as in the above images, may exhibit one of many O2 sensor codes if the
terminal is not seated properly. Due to this connector being a part of the vehicle harness, once
the connector is damaged, no sensor will perform properly. Allowing for intermittentconnections will cause an increase in resistance or a shorted circuit. Using the proper Metra-
pack connector test lead will ensure proper diagnosis the first time. Using the proper diagnostic
method and procedure will help to avoid unwanted comebacks and illuminated MIL lights.
