TB p. 80 No. 1
a) A. Eid (family is having a meal, lots of food)
B. Christmas (Christmas tree, presents, stocking on mantelpiece, child
looks excited)
C. Halloween (children in costumes, pumpkins)
D. New Year’s Eve (fireworks, dark, night)
E. Easter (child collecting Easter eggs, painted eggs, Easter egg hunt)
F. Hanukkah (lighting the candles, Menorah, Man is wearing a kippa)
The pictures for Christmas and Hanukkah were easy to match. I think the
picture for Eid was difficult to match because people often have a meal
with their family to celebrate lots of different festivals.
b) I know about Thanksgiving. They celebrate this in the US and in Canada. People visit
friends and family and have a big meal with turkey and pumpkin pie. In the US
Thanksgiving is on the fourth Thursday in November. In Canada it’s earlier, it’s the
second Monday in October. It’s much bigger in the US than in Canada. For many it’s a
more important family festival than Christmas.
c) What’s yout favourite festival? – My favourite festival is Halloween.
When is it? – It’s on the thirty-first of October.
How do you celebrate it? – We often wear scary costumes and go trick-
for-treating. We sometimes decorate the house and have a party.
d) My favourite festival is New Year’s Eve. It is on the thirty-first of December. We
usually set off fireworks and go to bed very late.
TB p. 81 No. 2

TB p. 82 No. 3
a) I think it is interesting that the shops are decorated with little red flags and that the
children get good-luck money in red envelopes from their family and friends. The
other thing I find interesting is that it’s the beginning of a new year at the end of
January. The beginning of a new year is usually at the beginning of January.
b) The boys found an envelope with thirty pounds in it. They don’t know what to do
with it because they don’t know who lost it. Rajiv wants to keep it, but Charlie says
they must give it back. I would ask the police officer for help. / I think I would keep.
TB p. 82 f. No. 4
a) Rajiv is going to look for the owner.

a) St Patrick’s Day is on 17th March. On ST Patrick’s Day Irish people all over the world
want to show that they are happy to be Irish. There are lots of big parties and street
parades. People dance and sing Irish songs.
b) St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He was a bishop. People say he brought
Christianity to Ireland. / He was born in the fourth century and died in the fifth
century. He died on 17th March. St Patrick used the shamrock (= Kleeblatt, siehe Foto
im TB; auch die British-Iles-Map vorne im TB) as a symbol to explain Christianity
(Trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit). This explains the importance of
the colour green on St Patrick’s Day.
TB p. 86 No. 8
My favourite festival is Valentine’s Day. We celebrate it on 14th February. People often send
flowers and chocolate to their sweethearts. In some countries people send cards, too. I think
it is nice to tell people that you like or love them.

cake. Mrs Lambraki loved the scarf and the flowers but thought the birthday card
smells of oranges. The meal was delicious, ans good as a top-class restaurant.

frischem Brot.

a) I like that they put mince pies for Father Christmas in front of the chimney and wear
paper crowns on their heads. Christmas in England sounds like a lot of fun. I don’t like
that they eat the leftovers from their Christmas lunch on Boxing Day. I don’t like that
you have to wait until the 25th December before you can open your present.

c) For many people in Germany, Christmas starts on the 1st December, when they open
the first door on their Advent calendar. I usually have two Advent calendars. My
mum always makes one for me and my sister. Behind every door there is a little
present. The other Advent calendar is from my grandparents. They buy it and send it
by post. It is a chocolate Advent Calendar. Most people in Germany put the Christmas
tree up and decorate it on the 23rd December. They put the tree up in the living
room. It stays there until the 6th January. Many people in Germany have an Advent
wreath with four candles on it. They light one candle on every Sunday in the four
weeks before Christmas. People in Germany open their Christmas presents in the
evening of the 24th December. Some families have a family meal before they open
their presents, and some families have their family meal after the presents. In many
families it is sausages and potato salad on Christmas Eve. On the 25th December
there is a big meal for lunch. It is often goose. On Boxing Day people often visit
relatives.

a) Rajiv wants to make a light and sound show for Diwali. His parents are visiting friends
in Camden. Rajiv didn’t tell his parents because he wants it to be a surprise for them
when they come home.
b) .
Mr Patel: Rajiv! What happened?
Mrs Patel: Switch the lights on, please.
Rajiv: Umm, well, I can’t. They’re broken.
Mr Patel: Broken? What do you mean?
Rajiv: Well, I tried to set up a sound and light show as a surprise for you, to celebrate
Diwali. I joined the lights to my computer and my stereo. But it did’t work …
Mr Patel: You plugged in too many things, Rajiv!
Rajiv: I didn’t know that could happen. It wanted it to be a surprise for you.
Mrs: Patel: Well, it certainly was!

b) I like the birthday party in Mexico best because the piñata sounds like a great idea. I
also think it sounds fun to eat birthday cake without using your hands.
c) On my birthday I always open my presents in the morning before school. I always do
a fun activity with my family. Sometimes we go to a restaurant, other times we go to
the cinema. I often have a birthday party with all my friends. We have pizza, ice
cream, chocolate cake and lemonade. We play funny games and laugh a lot. I love to
have candles on my birthday cake. I always try to blow them out.

a) Gillian and Karla are talking about a birthday present for Karla’s brother. Karla can’t
think of a present for him. Gillian has an idea: a rainbow cake.
b) Karla needs some cocoa, red food colouring, butter, sugar, flour, baking powder,
three eggs, chocolate and sweets to make the rainbow cake.
Karla’s shopping list:

c) My favourite recipe is for peanut butter cookies. You only need three things: some
sugar, some peanut butter and one egg. You mix the tree things together and then
use a spoon to make balls with the mixture. Then you press a fork onto the top of the
cookies and bake them in the oven for six to eight minutes at 175°C (= one hundred
and seventy-five degrees Celsius).
TB p. 99 No. M6
a) I like the game “On one knee” best because I think it would be very funny to throw a
ball with my chin on the floor. The game sounds difficult but fun to play.
b) I enjoy playing the “Chocolate Game” at parties. You all sit in a circle and take it in
turns to roll the dice. When you roll a six, you have to go into the middle of the circle
and put on a scarf, a hat and some gloves. Then you have to try to eat some
chocolate with a knife and fork. When someone else rolls a six, they become the new
chocolate eater.
