Past narrative

The shots of Taylor when she is younger gives the audience some background to what she has been brought up with, in the shots she is on the left whilst her parents are behind her on the right, this dominance over the shot shows that her parents arguments when she was younger did hold some dominance in her life, the dark tint around the side of the shot shows that it is a flashback.

The idea of a past narrative is reoccurring throughout the video of ‘Mine,’ the fact that the character is mostly on the left on the side can be representative of the main things in her life being of some importance and having dominance over her life. Especially with the male aspect in the narrative of the story being always on the right, highlighting that this video is essentially a love story.

The insert shot showing the engagement ring shows that that object is significant to Taylor or the character she is playing within the music video, it also shows that it is important to the story of the video because without it the video to ‘Mine’ could not progress.

Future narrative

The shots that take place in the future involve much brighter lightning and Taylor is obviously older, as the story shows her having children and getting married – they are seen as doing ‘typical’ family activities, making it explicitly obvious that she is older and that her life is moving on.

The shots are much brighter in comparison to the ones before, there are much more outdoor shots to get a natural light, whereas comparing it to the scene before, the one where the male and female character are having an argument, it takes place at night and is therefore darker, representing that it was a dark time for the characters within the music video.

Performance elements

The extreme close up on Taylor’s face makes sure that the star image is there, the star image is used to make the video obviously about that singer and for the public to recognise her as someone famous.

The fact that now Taylor is on the right on the performance element could represent that she is now the dominant one on the screen because the male character is not there, the pictures behind her are of her and the male character when she is younger – telling their story in pictures behind her in the performance element.

The interaction with the props behind her brings attention to the props and goes with the lyrics that she is singing, also fitting in with the story to the narrative.
