At Taylor we believe that education is a partnership between home and school. We are looking forward to working closely with you over the months and years ahead. The booklet also contains information that we are now required by law to give you. We hope you find it useful. If there is anything else that you want to know about the school, or if you have any worries about your child please do not hesitate to contact us. Simply telephone the School or call in and see us. Please be assured of a warm welcome. We are here to help you and your child. With good wishes for a happy time at Taylor Road. Yours sincerely Mehrunnissa Issa Chris Hassall Chair of Governors Headteacher

AN INTRODUCTION TO TAYLOR

Taylor is a multicultural Primary School maintained by the Leicester Education Authority. We cater for the 3 to 11 age range and we draw most of our children from the St Matthew's Estate. St Matthew's is an area of mainly Council-owned housing, situated some 10 minutes walks from the facilities of Leicester City Centre. The Estate is close to Abbey Park and in recent years it has undergone a great deal of improvement in order to provide modern living facilities and good amenities for play and recreation. The St Matthew's Neighbourhood Centre is well used by the local community, the nearby What Cabin is a popular play centre for the children, St Matthews Sure Start and St. Matthew’s Contact Project have close contact with the School and the active Tenants' Association has done much to promote a sense of community pride.

The School was previously housed in a three-storey 1930's building, which stood prominently on the edge of the Estate. In September, 2009, we moved into a £11 million new state of the art school building on the corner of Taylor Road and Montreal Road The new school has two halls, a studio, a new library an ICT suite and 22 classrooms.

During the school year 2014/2015 we have 678 children on roll including the Foundation Stage. Most children enter the school in Foundation 1 (Nursery) at the age of 3+ and attend on a part time basis. In the academic year before their 5th birthday all children transfer to a Foundation 2 Classes and attend full time. The rest of the school is arranged into two Key Stage departments. Key Stage 1 caters for 5 to 7 year olds and Key Stage 2 caters for the 7 to 11 age range. At the age of eleven the children transfer to a variety of Secondary Schools in the city.

ADMISSION POLICY Admissions to our part-time Foundation 1 classes are managed by the School and are the responsibility of the Governing Body. The LA is the admissions authority for maintained schools from Foundation 2 onwards.

Foundation One Admissions • We have a secure Foundation Unit which has 4 base rooms and a quiet room. • We accept children’s names onto our waiting list and encourage parents to place

their child’s name on the list as soon as possible. • Children can be admitted, for a part-time placement, at the beginning of the

academic year after their third birthday. Children are admitted from the waiting list on a strictly “First Come – First Served” order.

• Children who are 4 or older during the academic year (September to August) are admitted according to the LEA admissions policy.

Enrolment • You may enrol your child for the Foundation Stage or School at any time during

a School Session by visiting the School Office and completing the necessary forms.

• You will be asked to show your child’s birth certificate or proof of their date of birth together with proof of address when you enrol your child.

• You will be asked to complete forms which give your child’s details, contact names, and other issues related to their well being at School.

• Before your child is admitted to the School we would expect the parent/carer and child to be shown around the School. Admission to the School is not possible on the day of enrolment as all admissions must be administered by the LA.

At all times we aim to ensure equal opportunities in the admission of children to the school, including those who have special educational needs. VISITING ARRANGEMENTS The Head Teacher and your child's Class Teacher will always be pleased to meet with you to discuss any concerns that you might have about your child. It is easier for the Head Teacher to meet with you if you make an appointment but for urgent matters he is available throughout the school day. The best time to see your child's Class Teacher is before the start of morning school or at the end of the day. During the year we hold meetings for parents at the start of the School year, meetings about curriculum areas, such as reading, and two evenings for Parents and Carers when you are invited to discuss your child's progress with the class teacher. These are held in the Autumn and Summer terms. STARTING AT TAYLOR ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL At Taylor Road Primary School we are committed to ensuring that every child and their family are warmly welcomed into our school community and that they feel safe and secure especially during the first few weeks of their life in our school.

STARTING IN FOUNDATION STAGE 1 Before your child starts school you will be invited to come into school to see the Nursery class, meet the teachers and discuss your child’s first few weeks in school. The Foundation Stage Manager, Mrs King and your child’s class teacher will have daily contact with you as you plan your child’s first few weeks in school together. STARTING THE SCHOOL IN OTHER YEAR GROUPS We have a Friendly Face Induction Tutor called Mrs Debbie Monzack. She will make sure that your first few weeks at Taylor Road Primary School will be happy. Mrs Monzack promises to: • Meet and greet you on your first visit to the school when she will show you and

your family around the school and introduce you to important people on the staff. She will ensure that she has an interpreter with her if you need one.

• She will give each new child a Welcome Pack. In the Welcome Pack you find a multi-lingual welcome booklet, pencils, rubber, crayons, and activity book and a picture key ring.

• She will place your child in a class with a buddy, who speaks the same language as your child and they will sit together for the first few days until your child is settled.

• She will make sure that she makes contact with your child every day during their first week and will meet with you each week for at least the first two weeks to make sure that you are happy.

Mrs Monzack will give you her details so that you can contact her quickly if you need any more information or help. THE ETHOS AND AIMS In the Autumn term 2010, the staff and Governors revised the Schools’ ethos and aims.

ETHOS Taylor School is committed to child-centred education, which recognises and respects the individuality of pupils and their capacity to develop an understanding of themselves and their relationships with the world. We believe that:

• All children are entitled to equal opportunities to develop their true potential and to enjoy happy and fulfilling lives.

• Education is central to individual fulfilment, economic opportunity, and the culture and health of the communities.

• Children are our future and we aim to create in our pupils an interest in learning, a curiosity for knowledge and a pride in the acquisition of skills so that they are able to make the most of their chances.

• The basis for all education is an enquiring mind, together with personal values based on a shared moral code and good role models set by adults.

• Everyone is capable of true fulfilment whatever their culture, personal circumstances or particular talents.

AIMS At Taylor Road we aim to work in partnership with parents, carers and the local and wider community to provide:

• The maximum opportunity to succeed • Equal opportunities and respect for all • A sound spiritual, cultural, social and

moral framework based on shared values

• High quality teaching and learning

• A secure and well-disciplined learning environment

• A broad and balanced curriculum ANTI- RACISM Taylor Road Governing Body and staff have agreed the following anti-racist statement: “At Taylor Road Primary School we value every child and adult as an individual and we strive for equality, justice and fair treatment for all. We stand firmly against discrimination in whatever form it takes. We see racism as a serious wrong that affects children from an early age. We are committed to taking firm action to deal with it through working with individual victims and perpetrators as well as through the curriculum that we teach. We believe that we have a responsibility to help our children to live safely, confidently and happily together in our multi-ethnic society. We want them to grow up with a positive view of themselves and to have

respect for their own and each other's cultures. We aim to ensure that this is reflected throughout the life of the school and we undertake to review our practices and policies accordingly.” We recognise that a concerted approach is needed in order to resist racism and other forms of discrimination. We will therefore actively seek opportunities of working in partnership with the community, the Local Education Authority and other schools in our locality." HEALTH EDUCATION Taylor Road School has been awarded Healthy Schools status – a nationally recognised award – three times in the past seven years and currently holds the award. At Taylor we are committed to a policy which promotes the good health and general well being of all children from the Nursery through to Year 6. This emphasis is continued when the children move to Secondary School. Our School Nurse is involved in our Health Education work and he is happy to meet any parents or carers needing advice on health matters concerning their children. We work actively to foster the children's physical, mental and moral education. We do our utmost to investigate immediately any incidents involving racism, bullying or harassment. We believe that children have the right to come to school knowing that they will be well cared for. The school was awarded the Community Anti-Bullying Award in 2012 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND COLLECTIVE WORSHIP Taylor is not affiliated to any particular religious denomination. We are fortunate to draw our children from a range of faiths and we enjoy good relations with places of worship in the community. At Taylor we follow the Leicester Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education, emphasising the importance of children having an appreciation of, and respect for, other faiths. You have a right to withdraw your child from acts of collective worship and religious education. Very few children are withdrawn from our daily assemblies which emphasise the values shared by all major religions, such as telling the truth, being kind and helping others. Children withdrawn from collective worship or religious education have extra lessons in personal and social education. You are welcome to come to any assembly to see our arrangements. GROWING UP AND RELATIONSHIPS

The aims of our Growing up and Relationships Policy are that children are encouraged to explore values and moral issues, consideration of physical growth and personal relationships and the development of communication and decision making skills to foster self-esteem, self awareness, a sense of moral responsibility and the skills to avoid and resist unwanted experiences of any kind. We provide for all our pupils including those with special educational needs and ensure full entitlement and access to all. The content of our policy aims to help children to:

• Develop children’s notions of self-esteem and self worth; • Increase their respect and understanding of their own and others’

bodies; • Develop within them a caring and considerate attitude to each other

and to society; • Develop a sensitivity and respect for others, regardless of gender,

race, creed, culture or disability; • Enable them to appreciate historical and cultural differences; • Increase children’s confidence in forming, maintaining and ending

friendships; • Develop responsibility in friendships and relationships; • Foster an awareness and tolerance of the different aspects of

relationships. • Become aware of their own emotions and how to manage them; • Make positive choices; • Assess, understand and resist peer and social pressures; • Protect themselves from abuse; • Confide in an adult if they feel they have been the victim of abuse.

Within the Science National Curriculum children are taught: At Key Stage 1: That animals, including humans, move, feed, grow, use their

senses and reproduce; That humans and other animals can produce offspring and that these offspring grow into adults.

At Key Stage 2: That the life processes common to humans and other animals include nutrition, movement, growth and reproduction; About the main stages of the human life cycle e.g. birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age.

Children are taught as described in the Science curriculum. In recognition of parents’ views, no specific lessons in sex education are taught. INVOLVEMENT OF PARENTS, CARERS AND THE COMMUNITY The school has been awarded the highly regarded National Leading Parents Partnership Award. We welcome your involvement in your child's education. We would be delighted if you could help your child with any work that the Class Teacher sends home. If you have any time to spare during the day we would be very pleased to involve you in the work of the School. We have 6 parent representatives on the governing body and they help the governors to be kept informed of the views of parents and carers. We organise various classes for parents and the local community each week in ICT, English Language and we have a thriving parents group. At Taylor we are in regular contact with other organisations and agencies that work on the St Matthew's Estate. We find that by working together we are better able to meet the needs of families and the community. NATIONAL CURRICULUM We will make every effort to ensure that your child grasps the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics. This will take place within the National Curriculum, which is taught, from the age of 5. The core subjects of English and mathematics are mainly taught as separate subjects. The foundation subjects of science, history, geography, design technology, information technology, art, music and physical education are often taught through a 'topic' approach. Ks2 SATs Our Ks2 SATs are hugely impressive. Once again we are above national figures in all areas in terms of attainment at all levels. INCLUSION STATEMENT In 2010 the school was awarded the nationally recognised Inclusion Quality Mark for its work on SEN and Inclusion. Taylor Road Primary School is committed to being an inclusive school, where we celebrate diversity and difference and acknowledge the richness that these bring to our school community. We aim to provide opportunities for all children to access a broad and balanced curriculum, regardless of their ability, age, disability, gender, ethnicity or language that is personalised to meet their individual needs. We have

high expectations for all children and are committed to giving all our children every opportunity to achieve the highest of standards personally and academically. The attitudes, achievements and well-being of all our children matter. SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS In school we follow the advice contained in the Code of Practice which became law in 1993 with subsequent updates. All children who have a special education need are placed within a staged process:- School Action - the class teacher and SENCo draw up individual targets for the child; School Action Plus - we involve outside agencies to help achieve the child's individual targets; If progress is still limited and difficulties are prolonged all parties (including parents/carers) may decide to ask the LEA to assess and consider the child's special educational needs; The LEA after assessing the child’s special educational needs decides whether a statement of special education needs should be issued which details the support a child should receive in order to make progress. All children with special educational needs are integrated with all other children. The LEA has delegated monies to support statemented pupils to the school and the school also contributes from its own budget to support children who have special educational needs. This is spent to allow the SENCo non-contact time, providing pupils with extra nursery nurse and classroom assistant support, to provide resources, extra training needs and for extra assessments and advice from professionals outside of school. The School has a Special Educational Needs Policy, updated each year. There are no changes to the policy this year except some personnel changes. The School has between 25% and 30% of its pupils on the special educational needs register at any one time. Some pupils will be placed on the SEN register and after receiving support for a short period of time will be taken off the register, however, some pupils will require support for longer periods of time. If parents have any concerns about their child and special educational needs they are welcome to speak to Mrs Jones who has a special responsibility for special educational needs on behalf of the Governing Body. ACCESSIBILITY AND DISABILITY This current school building was built in 2009 on three floors, is connected by twelve flights of stairs and there is also a lift that connects the floors. This current building has ramped access, disabled toilets, a hygiene room and a provision of a bed which can provide give equal access to disabled people, pregnant staff and potential pupils. Pupils with sensory difficulties are assessed by the Special Needs Teaching Service at the LA and an informed decision is made jointly between the School and

the parents as to the suitability and safety of the building for that particular child. Any child admitted to Taylor Primary School with a physical disability will have an Individual Education Plan drawn up after discussion with School, outside professionals and the parents. This will detail any exclusion from an activity because of their difficulty, otherwise they would follow the Special Needs policy of inclusion to all class activities. SCHOOL MEALS Our school cook, Mrs.Pole, has been Leicester School Cook of the Year and her team in the kitchen was named School Kitchen Team of the Year. Most of our children stay to school lunch. The lunches are cooked at school kitchen. Vegetarian, non-vegetarian and Halal meals are available. If you wish to enquire about free school meals details are available from the school office. Packed lunches should be brought in a named container and no fizzy drinks or glass bottles are allowed. BREAKFAST CLUB Our school runs a daily breakfast club throughout term times. For 10 pence per day (the cheapest school breakfast club in Leicester) children can eat as much as they need to ensure they are ready for a day’s hard work at school. The breakfast club menu consists of cereal with milk, fruit, yogurt, toast with various jams and eggs. Breakfast club starts at 7.40 a.m. until school starts at 8.40 a.m. The daily sessions also include “wake up and shake up” keep fit and sports with our sports coaches, Ms. and Mr. Khalifa. All children are welcome to join the Wake Up and Shake Up classes In 2013 the school kitchen and the school breakfast club were graded as outstanding by Leicester City Council’s Environmental Health Department for food hygiene arrangements For the past nine years the school has been awarded the highly prestigious Healthy Schools Award, partly in recognition to its commitment to healthy eating. SAFETY AND WELFARE Your child's safety and welfare are of the utmost importance to us at Taylor. In order to help us with this we ask you to fill in a simple form giving information

about your child and details of a person who can be contacted during the day in case of an emergency. We also ask you to tell us about any medical conditions relating to your child. It is important that you keep us informed of any changes in the details on the form. If your child requires medicine at school you must complete a permission slip held by the School Office. Only medicines prescribed by a medical practitioner can be given in school. Many children now suffer from asthma and we ask their parents or carers to complete an asthma card giving details of treatment being followed. All inhalers should be labelled with the child's name and children should be able to look after them for themselves. In the interest of safety no dogs are allowed on the school grounds. In 2014 the school’s health and safety provision was graded as outstanding by Leicester City Council. SEVERE WEATHER From time to time we are unable to open the school because of severe weather. In this event we would find it helpful if you could listen to local radio early in the morning. We try to make sure that news about the school being closed is broadcast at the earliest opportunity. ABSENCES AND LATENESS The Department for Education now has strict rules covering absence from school. Whenever your child is absent you should let us know the reason for this at the earliest opportunity, preferably in a letter. Failure to do this could result in your child being given an unauthorised absence. We are also required to publish the percentage of unauthorised and authorised absences during last school year. They were: Unauthorised absences for the school year: 2011/12: 0.6 % Authorised absences for the school year: 2011/12: 3% Attendance for the school year: 2011/12: 96.44% Children are given much encouragement to attend school regularly. Good Attendance stickers are awarded every half term to those with full attendance. Your child's Class Teacher will mark the register at the start of the morning and afternoon sessions. The register will be “closed” 20 minutes after the session has started. Children will be marked late if they arrive during this period. They will be marked absent if they arrive after this time. The absence is “authorised” if we are given an explanation, preferably in writing. It is “unauthorised” if no explanation is received. Details of children's lateness and absences now have to appear on their end of year report. We arrange for the Education Welfare Officer to visit families whose children’s lateness or attendance gives us cause for concern.

IMPORTANT FRIENDLY WARNING: We have a policy for absence or holiday requests in term time. Parents have no legal right to take their children out of school in term time. You must make a written request if you wish to take you child out of school in term time before you book a holiday or flights. The school will only grant a maximum of TEN DAYS authorised holiday in school time in any one academic year. However, this is not an automatic right and it will depend on the time of the holiday and your child’s previous attendance. Absences beyond that ten day period will be regarded as unauthorised, the Education Welfare Service of Leicester City Council will be contacted by the school and you will be fined £50 per parent per child for any absence beyond the ten days. Failure to pay the fine may result in a bigger fine or even a court appearance. PLEASE READ THE ABSENCE/HOLIDAY POLICY SENT TO YOU WITH THIS PROSPECTUS. SCHOOL DISCIPLINE At Taylor we expect children to have good manners, to show self-discipline and to be considerate of others. We believe that children learn best if they are in a safe and well-disciplined school. To help this we have a behaviour policy, which was developed in conjunction with parents, carers, children and governors. This contains simple rules for the children to follow. Our rules are: • Pay attention and follow instructions • Keep hands and feet to

yourself • No bullying, teasing or racist comments • Look after our school • Be kind and helpful to each other • Walk quietly in school and on paths The policy uses praise, rewards and sanctions to encourage good behaviour. Copies of our rules are displayed around the school. Your child’s teacher will be happy to let you see a copy of our Behaviour Policy. The Policy covers all activities in which children are involved, including sports and visits. It is not the policy of the School or the Local Education Authority to use corporal punishment. Extreme cases of disobedience or misbehaviour will result in loss of privileges. Parents and carers may be asked to discuss such cases with the Head Teacher in order that home and school can work together for an improvement in behaviour. In extreme cases of misbehaviour at lunch times parents and carers will be asked to make arrangements for their child go home for lunch until the problem is resolved.

LITERACY The school has twice been awarded the much prized Basic Skills Mark for its high quality literacy and maths provision. Literacy involves all aspects of English:- speaking, listening, reading and writing. Literacy is taught from the Nursery through to Year 6. Literacy is taught through the ‘Success For All’ literacy programme. This combines units on speaking and listening, reading and writing. The children have a dedicated literacy lesson lasting 90 minutes every morning. The children use a variety of books some of which they are allowed to bring home to keep. Older children learn to read through reading fiction and non-fictional books. We encourage all our children to enjoy reading and using books. They are allowed to bring home books from the school library and we have regular visits to the Local library on St Matthews Estate. Parents are encouraged to read to their children as well as with their children in English and in their mother tongue. Parents meetings, throughout the year, explain how we teach reading and how parents can support their children. Staff with responsibility for supporting children with learning English as an alternative language play an important part in the literacy lessons. Literacy skills are also taught throughout the day in other subjects. Writing is taught throughout the School along with spelling and handwriting. MATHS

Mathematical skills are taught from the Nursery through to Year 6. During 2008/9 we are introducing Success for All Numeracy in Key Stages One and Two. All children have a daily lesson dedicated to Numeracy skills. During this lesson the children practice and learn mental arithmatic skills, have a class introduction and complete a mathematical activity.

Mathematics, as well as being basic number work, also includes work on shape and space, measuring and handling data. ICT The school has twice been awarded the highly valued ICT Quality Mark for its excellent ICT provision The School has a state of the art computer room in which we have over 50 computers. The computers are all linked to the internet and colour printers. We also have computers in all classrooms linked to interactive whiteboards.

The children have a dedicated ICT lesson of at least one hour per week in one of the computer rooms and groups of children may use the computers at other times to support their work in other subjects. SCHOOL’S ARTS POLICY AND PROVISION Our school has been awarded the highly prestigious silver and gold Arts Marks by the Arts Council of the UK for its very good arts provision. At Taylor School we teach our children the creative, imaginative and practical skills to develop their understanding, personal expression and enjoyment of various art forms, such as art, craft, design, music, drama, dance, literature and poetry. In order to develop visual perception in art craft and design, children are taught the skills to express ideas and feeling, record observations, and design and make images and artefacts. Children are taught about visual and tactile elements, including pattern, texture, colour and tone. Pupils are also taught to appreciate the work of artists from various cultures, past and present. In KS1 and KS2 one hour is devoted to art, craft and design each week. In music lessons pupils are given opportunities to enjoy and understand music through performing, composing, listening and making judgements about music. Children in year 3 and 4 have the opportunity to learn to pay the recorder. Children in Years 5 & 6 have weekly lessons from the Leicestershire Arts in Education, playing samba drums. Visiting musicians are regularly invited to perform for the children and hold special one day workshops. Drama sessions are taught in school through cross-curricular activities and can be seen particularly within music and dance lessons. The children have had experience of live theatre, through visiting theatre groups. There is an after school Drama Club and the children themselves perform regularly within school during class assemblies and also to a larger audience within our festival celebrations. The pupils at Taylor have opportunities to express themselves through dance sessions, which form part of the PE curriculum. The school has a wide choice of taped dance sessions which can be part of cross-curricular themes. The children also have opportunities to learn more formal dances such as English country dancing, Latin dancing and Indian Raas, Garba and Bhangra dancing.

TAYLOR PRIMARY SCHOOL’S SPORTING AIMS AND PROVISION OF SPORT AND PE Taylor Road was one of the first primary schools to be awarded the 2012 Olympics Get Set Status in recognition of its work on the forthcoming Olympics in London. Olympic athletes have visited the school and a programme of activities has been set up. Children at Taylor Primary School have extensive opportunities to develop a wide range of physical activity, both during and outside school hours. Our PE curriculum aims to promote physical activity and healthy life styles, to develop positive attitudes such as fair play, honest competition, and team spirit, and to ensure safe practices such as children following teachers’ instructions and the rules of the activities. Within KS1 and KS2 two hours each week are devoted to PE and the children follow a programme of games, gymnastics, athletics and dance. Throughout the school year the Year 4, 5 and 6 classes attend swimming lessons at Cossington Street baths. We employ sporting coaches to support the teaching of skipping and fitness lessons and the sports coaches, as well as school staff, provide a variety of lunchtime and after school sporting clubs.

Ms Tarbert, our Inclusion Mentor and Mr Khalifa one of our Sports Coaches, encourage sports and games at lunchtimes and provide equipment for various games. The football club meets each lunchtime. In recent years our School Football Teams were unbeaten, winning the Billing Cup and the Divisional Shield.

After School Clubs include football, rounders, netball, hockey, cricket, badminton, basketball, athletics, gymnastics, table tennis, multi-sports and short tennis. Our PE facilities include two halls and a playground with markings on it. Our Staff hold a range of sporting qualifications. Mr Tamgumus, Mr Khalifa, and Mr Kadri hold current qualifications to teach swimming, and Mr Hassall and Mr. Kadri are also qualified FA football coaches, and referees. Mr. Hassall is also a qualified cricket coach. We also use outside coaches for sports tuition such as gymnastics and cricket coaches at St Matthews Sports Hall and a qualified swimming instructor at the local Cossington Street baths. Our sporting year ends with separate sports days for the Nursery, KS1 and KS2 in June each year, when our children display their sporting skills to their families on Bushy Park. In 2010, the school was awarded National Leadership and National Support School status – the most prestigious school leadership award in the UK. Teachers from other local schools and schools nationally visit Taylor Road to see the teaching and learning. CHARGES FOR SCHOOL ACTIVITIES At Taylor we believe that School visits, including opportunities to be away from home for a few days, are an important part of your child's educational experience. Much of the work in the National Curriculum now depends on children being able to learn through first hand experience. The School organises an annual two day visit for Year Six children at Quorn Hall in Leicestershire when children experience canoeing, orienteering, and rock climbing. Changes in the law have meant that we can no longer charge for school visits. You might be invited to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost of a visit. No

child will be prevented from taking part in a visit if the parent or carer does not make a contribution. However unless the majority of children bring a contribution the visit might have to be cancelled. We find that parents and carers usually agree with us about the value of visits and are prepared to make their contribution. We look forward to your support in the future. The Governors have agreed to pay 50% of the cost of trips and visits outside School for each child. There is no charge for school swimming lessons. If you child receives free school meals or has received them at any time in the past six years there is no charge for any school activities, including breakfast club and trips All lunchtime and after school clubs, music tuition and Taylor Road’s Saturday morning complementary school are free of charge In cases of hardship the Head Teacher is happy to discuss ways in which the school might help with costs. SCHOOL DRESS CODE In the School Governors revised the School Dress Code. The official dress code is: Black sweatshirts, jumpers or cardigans

SCHOOL SYMBOL, MOTTO, STORY AND SONG Our school motto is the starfish. SERVICES FROM WHICH THE SCHOOL BENEFITS As a Leicester school we are able to make use of a wide range of services provided by the Local Authority. The Education Welfare Service gives help to children,

parents and carers in handling a variety of problems. The Special Educational Needs Service offers help to children with a range of educational difficulties. We can also call upon the Education Psychology Service for advice and to work with parents, carers and children. The Child Health Service is on hand to identify any health needs by carrying out regular medical examinations at school. Teachers are supported in their classroom work through being able to attend in-service training courses. SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE Every school in Leicester is required by law to follow a set procedure in cases of suspected child abuse. Teachers are required to refer any concerns to the Headteacher and Head Teachers are required by law to refer such concerns to the Social Services Department for further investigation so that children at risk can be identified quickly. This procedure is intended to protect children from abuse. When a school refers a concern about a pupil to the Social Services Department, it is not accusing the parent or carer of abuse, but requesting that further investigation takes place to establish whether or not a child is at risk. COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE There is an agreed procedure set down by the Local Education Authority for dealing with any complaints about the school and other related issues. The procedure provides that: • There should normally be an informal preliminary discussion with the Head

Teacher or other appropriate school staff to see if your complaint can be resolved without recourse to the formal procedures;

• If your complaint cannot be resolved informally you should write to the Clerk of the Governing Body, whose address is available at the school. Your complaint will be initially investigated by the Chair of Governors. If this procedure fails to resolve the dispute, the matter may be referred to a Governor Complaints Committee.

• A copy of the Governors’ Complaints Procedure can be obtained from the School Office.
