T A Y L O R , OF ORANGE COUNTY, VIRGINIA.

TAYLOR. To elucidate other lines in this volume, this very imperfect Taylor pedigree

is given. It is based mainly on a chart of the descendants of James Taylor of Carlisle, Eng., kindly loaned me by Miss Edmonia Taylor. Like the most of such family records, this chart is very deficient in those essentials to genealogical accuracy, /. e. full names and dates. Mr. Erasmus Taylor, of 168, has also sent me the family Bible record of 14 Erasmus Taylor, 1715-1794. Very few other members of the line of James have responded to my courteous letters of inquiry, which always enclosed stamps for reply. The historical matter is the result of my personal research.

R E V . A L E X A N D E R B A L M A I N E , D. D., was b. near Edinburgh, Scotland, 1740; d. Winchester, Va., —. ««He was ed. Univ. of St Andrew's, for the Presbyterian Ministry, but relinquished his design. He and his brother who was a lawyer, were warm friends of the Colonists in the Stamp Act difficulties, and became so obnoxious, on that account, to the loyalists about Edinburgh, that they thought it best to try their fortunes elsewhere, and moved to London, where they become acquainted with Mr. Arthur Lee who recommended Mr. Balmaine to the family of Richard Henry Lee as private tutor. While there he prepared for the ministry of the Episcopal church, and, upon receiving orders, became rector of Augusta Parish, Va., then extending to the Ohio river, including, it is believed, Pittsburgh itself, for he paid several visits to the Episcopalians in that place. When our difficulties commenced with England, true to his principles adopted in Scotland, he took an early and active part; was chairman of the Committee of Safety in Augusta, and drafted the resolutions adopted by that committee, (v. Meade II., 319.) Soon after this he entered the Virginia line as Captain, continuing so 'till the close of the war. Mr. B. was rector of the Parish of Frederick until his death. I was his assistant during a number of the last years of his life." (M., II., 285.) Mr. Balmaine was ordained and licensed by the Ld. Bp. of London for Cople Parish, Westmoreland Co., Va., Oct II, 1772. (H. S. P.) As Bp. M . says nothing of him in connexion with Cople Parish, it is supposed that he did not labour there. From the records bf Augusta Co. church it appears that, Nov. 9,1773, Rev. John Jones, rector of Augusta Parish, agreed to receive Mr. B. as curate at the rate of J£IOO a year to be paid out of his salary. The vestry ratified this agreement, Nov. 18, but ordered that the Collector pay the .£100 directly to Mr. B. (W. 133. P. 175.) Mr. B. left Augusta Par. on the authority of Bp. M.„ 1775. "From this time (April, 1775) Mr. Balmaine laid aside his peaceful vestments as a minister of God, and went into the army as chaplain in defence of his country." (II., 321.) The Bishop is probably in error as to the date. The only record of Mr. Balmaine's revolutionary services that I have been able to find is on p. 4, Doc. 30, Va. Leg., 1833, where he is reported as having received, April 3, 1783, a Warrant from Va. for 6666% acres of land for services as Chaplain from Feb. 20, 1777 to Mar. 25, 1783, a period of 6 years. On Dec. 9, 1S07, he rec'd a second warrant for 833 acres for 9 months services, which extends his services to 6 years and 9 months. Bishop M's estimate of his character is appropriate here. He says:

"My connexion with Mr. B. was most pleasant and harmonious. He was one of the most simple and single hearted of men. Himself and his excellent partner were the friends of the poor, and indeed of all, and were beloved by all who knew them. They had no children, and having some property, as well as a few hundred dollars rent for the glebe, might have lived in a little style and self-indulgence, but they were economical and self-

denying in all things, that they might have something for the poor and for the promotion of pious objects. They did not even keep fire in their chamber during the coldest weather of winter. They had one family of servants who were to them as children. As children they inherited, and some still live in, the old mansion. As to some things Dr. Balmaine had been weak and at times led astray by those who surrounded him. But I can truly say, that for many of the last years of his life, a more warm hearted and exemplary man I know not Some of the most eloquent extempore effusions I ever heard were from his lips, while standing in the chancel on sacramental occasions, when he referred with tears to ast errors and sought to make amends by this testifying to evangelical doctrines and holy ving." (M., L , 36.) Mr. Balmaine was a mem. of the Va. Society of the Order of

Cincinnati. (R. A. B.) Bishop M . wrote his name "Balmaine." The. record of his ordination and other docu

ments give it as "Balmain."

Colonel Taylor, with his. brother Hancock, made the first recorded trading voyage down the Ohio and Miss, from Pittsburg to N . O., 1769, returning home by sea. He served in the Revolutionary War. He entered the service as Captain, V a . State Line ; promoted Feb. 4, 1778, Major 9th V a . Reg., and Dec. 7, 1779, Lieut. Colonel. (Hamersly.) He rec'd, Sep. S, 1783, from V a . 6,000 a. land for 3 years service; Apr. 20, 1799, 1,000 a. for the 7th year; Aug. 1, 1799, i.ooo a . for the Sth year, and Feb. 12, iSoS, 166% a. for 2 months service. (Va. Doc. 30.) Land warrant 7628 for 2,000 a. for his services as Captain was issued to his heirs in 1834. (Doc. 4, 23d Cong., 1834, p. 63.) Major Richard Taylor, Jefferson Co., Ky . , of the ist Reg. V a . Line, was placed on the U . S. pension rolls July 29. 182S, at jtcoo per ann., to commence Mar. 3, 1826. In 1835 the amount of the pension paid him or his heirs was $5400. (U. S. Pension Rolls, III., Ky . , p. 149.) In the 14th Congress he petitioned for the fourth time for compensation for his Revolutionary services. In the 19th Cong., 2d Sess,, 1826-7, his heirs applied for the

arrears of pension due him, which claim was granted Mar. 2, 1827. H e died therefore 1827. (List of Private Claims, III., 453.)

Colonel Taylor's civil record was equal to his military record. He removed to Jefferson Co., K y . , near Louisville, in 1785. He was elected a mem. K y . Conv. May, 1785, and the Const. Conv. of 1792; also of the 2d Const. Conv., Aug. 17, 1799. He was a mem. K y . Leg., 1792, under the 1st Constitution, and was elected one of the Judges of his county. H e was a Presidential Elector for K y . 1813, 1817, 1821 and 1825. H e was also U . S. Collector for K y . After his removal to K y . he was engaged in many of the conflicts between the frontier settlers and the Indians, and was severely wounded, 1792, near Eton, O., in the battle between Gen. Adair's command and the Indians under Little Turtle. '

" Col. Taylor was engaged in many of the most fiercely contested and bloody battles of the Revolutionary War, and particularly at Trenton, where he rendered distinguished and valuable aid to Washington in that brilliant achievement." (Montgomery's Life of Z. Taylor.)

"He was distinguished for his intrepid courage and imperturbable coolness in battle, and possessed the faculty, so invaluable in a military leader, of inspiring his followers with the same dauntless spirit that animated his own terrible and resistless charge." (Collins' Ky.) Children:

TAYLOR FAMILY 681

From Rep. 493, 22d Cong, I Sess, made by the Com. on Rev. Claims, it appears that his heirs made claim for commutation of five years full pay, for his services, which was granted. Their petition shows that he was a volunteer in the minute service for six months in 1776; commis'd Lieut, 1777, Cont Line, marched to the South, was appt'd aid to Gen. Woodford, and captured at Charleston, 1780. Certificates show that he was an Ensign and deputy Commissary; that be was on a list of officers who rec'd certificates for balance of full pay, by act of Ass'y, Va. 1781; that Thornton Taylor, D. T. C. of military stores, rec'd, June 20, 1782, the sum of .£397.10; that as ensign he rec'd, June 19,1783, thro' his agt. Col. Taylor, ^171.12.7. The war office shows that he rec'd pay 1781 and 1782. His reg't does not appear. He had never rec'd commutation. The Culp'r Co. Com. certified that Elizabeth Taylor was his widow and Woodford and Thornton T , his only sons and heirs at law. (v.
