Tax season is upon us! Need help preparing your taxes? The City of Whittier is partnering up

with AARP once again to assist you. Call to make an appointment beginning Monday, January 4,

2016 at the Uptown Senior Center (562) 567-9470 and Parnell Park (562) 567-9450. Appoint-

ments will be available on a first-come, first-served basis on Wednesdays or Thursdays begin-

ning February 3, ending April 14 at both centers. Appointments are one-hour, beginning at 9:00

a.m. to 12 noon. Please bring ALL necessary paperwork such as: Form SSA-1099/SS Card, W-2

Wage Statements, Last Years Tax Return (2014). Please call for more information.

at the Uptown Center, please note the following

1. Participants must submit a completed intake

2. RESERVATIONS FOR LUNCH MUST BE MADE 3 DAYS IN ADVANCE. RSVP between 9am-1pm

HELPFUL HINTS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SOCIAL SERVICES

The Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) serves

an ethnically and culturally diverse community through

programs designed to both alleviate hardship and pro-

mote health, personal responsibility, and economic inde-

pendence. The Department provides the following bene-

fits and services to low-income residents of Los Angeles

County: Temporary financial assistance and employment ser-vices for families and individuals.

Free and low-cost health care insurance for families with children, pregnant women and aged/blind/disabled adults;

Food benefits for families and individuals;

In-home services for elderly and disabled individu-als; and

Financial assistance and advocacy for federal disa-bility benefits for disabled individuals.

These services are provided locally throughout the many

communities that comprise Los Angeles County.

The DMV has established the Senior Driver Ombudsman Program

for the expressed purpose of helping all drivers maintain their driv-

ing independence for as long as they can do so safely.

To achieve this goal DMV will:

· Address specific concerns of senior drivers and provide DMV

resources (including education & training)

· Provide information and support to seniors and their loved ones

when safety becomes a concern

This presentation will take place at the Uptown Senior

Center on Tuesday, January 26 at 10:00 a.m.

We would like to introduce our new Yoga Instructor for both

senior centers. Beate comes with a wealth of Yoga experience

and physical therapy background. She is very excited to share

her knowledge with all of our seniors. Beate will teach you the

basics of Yoga the three main structures: exercise, breath-

ing, and meditation.

Senior Advisory Committee

The Senior Advisory Committee meets the 2nd

Wednesday of each month at 1:30 p.m. at the

Uptown Senior Center.

The public is welcome to attend the Senior

Advisory Committee meeting to make comments and

suggestions. The objective of the Advisory Commit-

tee is to advise staff on the operation of the Senior

Center. Committee members are elected into office

by the general senior membership.

Upcoming Meeting Dates:

January 13, 2016

NOTE: Beginning January 2016, the Senior Advisory

Committee will be meeting every other month.

Whittier Accessibility Committee

The seven-member committee is an advisory body

under the Social Services Commission which

studies access issues such as sidewalks,

transportation, facilities, etc., and recommends

access improvements to assist those with

disabilities in the community. Meetings are held

quarterly on the 4th Tuesday of January, April,

July and October from 1 - 2 p.m. at the Uptown

Senior Center. Public comments are welcomed at

the beginning of each meeting.
