The linguistic meaning of tawheed is unification or making

    something one or asserting oneness.

It comes from the Arabic verb wahhada, which itself means tounite, unify or consolidate.

When the word tawheed is used in reference to Allah the Exalted,

it means realizing and affirming Allah the Most Highs unity in all

of mans actions which directly or indirectly relate to Him.

    Tawheed ar-Ruboobeeyah

This means to maintain theOneness of Lordship.

This is based on the followingconcepts: Allah alone caused everything to

exist when there was nothing. He is the only One who sustains

and maintains His creation. He has no need from it or for it. He is the sole Lord of the

    universe and its inhabitants.

He has no real challenge to HisLordship.

Practical Example of Tawheed ar-Ruboobeeyah:The Youth of the Cave

Al-Kahf 18:10: [Mention] when the youths retreated to the cave and said, Our Lord, grantus from Yourself mercy and prepare for us our affair right guidance. The youth were facing those who were misguided. They believed in their Lord and so

they made the requests above from Allah the Merciful: Grant them Mercy Guide them

18:13-14: It is We who relate to you, their story in truth. Indeed, they were youths whobelieved in their Lord, and We increased them in guidance. And We made firm their heartswhen they stood up and said, Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth.Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then,an excessive transgression In the above Ayats, we see that these youth stood up to those who were worshipping

other than Allah the Almighty and affirmed their Tawheed, stating: Never will we

invoke besides Him any deity. So we see the youth above realizing and affirming the unity of Allah the Most High bystating that they will not invoke besides Allah the Almighty any other deity. They alsostated in the form of a rhetorical question, that the people have no authority orevidence of those other deities worshipped along with Allah the Most High.

Here, the youth demonstrate maintaining the oneness of Lordship of Allah the Almightyor Tawheed ar-Ruboobeeyah by stating that they will not invoke besides Him any otherdeity and by stating there is no evidence for the existence of any other deity. In

Tawheed ar-Ruboobeeyah, we learn that Allah the Exalted Alone is the sole Lord of theUniverse with no challenge to His Lordship. The youth have affirmed this in theirstatement above.

Practical Example of Tawheed ar-Ruboobeeyah:The Two Men With Gardens

Al-Kahf 18:35: And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. Hesaid, I do not think that this will perish ever 37-39 His companionsaid to him Have you disbelieved in He who created you? But as forme, He is Allah, my Lord, and I do not associate with my Lord anyone. Andwhy did you, when you entered your garden, not say, What Allah willed [hasoccured]; there is no power except in Allah?... Here the companion affirms Allah the Almightys Ruboobeyah by recognizing:

It is only Allah the Almighty who created us, ie. Allah the Almighty alonecreated us when there was nothing.

Nothing happens but by the will of Allah the Most High, ie. Allah theAlmighty is the only one who sustains and maintains His creation.

Saying that he will not associate with his Lord anyone, recognizing thatAllah the Almighty is the sole Lord of the universe.

Al-Kahf 18:42: And his fruits were encompassed [by ruin], so he began to turnhis hands about [in dismay] over what he had spent on it, while it had collapsedupon its trellises, and said, Oh, I wish I had not associated with my Lordanyone. When the arrogant man realized that he had associated partners with Allah

the Almighty (ie. denied Tawheed), it was too late.
