Your Mamaku Blue Tour includes being met on arrival by our friendly staff before you are escorted to our naturally “air conditioned” people carrier that will whisk you off into the orchard. Spend time discovering the story behind Mamaku Blue and learn the steps involved in getting the blueberry from the bush to the market.

From the orchard you will visit the sorting and packaging shed, where you will learn the intricacies of the export berry market and some of the steps that make Mamaku Blue berries so special. You will then proceed on through to the wine-making department, have a chat to the wine maker and learn about blueberry wines.

From there it is back on to the people carrier to be delivered to the specialised blueberry retail shop and café, where you can taste a range of blueberry products including our wines and liqueurs. You may like to make a purchase of blueberry products and enjoy one of the chef’s delicacies such as a hot blueberry pie or muffin with your choice of Dilmah tea or freshly brewed coffee.

If time permits arrange to stay for lunch or dinner (bookings essential). Our function room caters for large groups.

You may also like to browse through Mamaku memorabilia in our museum.

Our basic orchard/winery and tastings tour takes approximately 60 minutes, but be sure to allow additional time to enjoy the tastings and other treats available. Additional to our orchard and winery tours, the Mamaku Blue property has native bush walks and farm tours. A range of catering options is available for your morning/afternoon teas, lunches or dinners.

In conjunction with Mamaku Blue tours we also have available a selection of other interesting attractions in the district that can be visited to make a full and relaxed day of discovery. We are happy to help you plan a special day out to fit in with your itinerary.

IT

Is it High time to Protect your Digital Assets? This week we were called to look at a 10-year old laptop using Windows Live Mail for email on a Vista operating system. The owner has 1,000’s of files, emails and documents that are precious and would be sadly missed if lost.

While we applaud the careful use of this machine over many years, the fact that Windows Live Mail and Vista are software past expired, creates a real challenge for us technicians and absolutely, if the computer fails in any way, recovery options are expensive.

Now is the time to buy the right laptop to carry forward into the next decade. Don’t leave matters until it is too late to save your files and photos. Act now!Call us 7-days in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty on (07) 262 1000.

Now that spring is officially here and the weather will be improving, we can take the opportunity to get our bodies moving! From going walking to SAYGo Falls Prevention classes, there are a variety of ways to enable us to improve our health and wellbeing, at any level of ability.

As the Ministry of Health says staying active is important when you’re getting older (including if you have health conditions). Regular physical activity can improve your health and wellbeing, making it easier to perform daily tasks. Physical activity is any movement of the body that uses energy. You should aim for a mixture of aerobic, resistance, flexibility and balance activities.

Recommendations for older adults:Spend more time being physically active and less time sitting down.Do lots of daily physical activities such as:• walking to the shops• vacuuming• gardening• washing the car

Spring Fitness Any level of physical activity is better than doing nothing!

Aim for at least 30 minutes of aerobic physical activity on 5 days each week. Aerobic activity makes your breathing and heart rate increase. Some examples of aerobic activities to increase your heart rate and breathing include:• brisk walking• ballroom dancing• cycling• kapa haka• lane swimming• playing with grandchildren• kilikiti

Do 60 minutes aerobic activity on 5 days each week for additional health benefits and to lose weight.

Aim for 3 sessions of flexibility and balance activities, and 2 sessions of resistance activities each week (in addition to the aerobic physical activity). Some examples of resistance, flexibility and balance activities include:Resistance (for muscle and bone strength):• carrying shopping• standing up and sitting down repeatedly

• weight trainingFlexibility (for easy movement):• modified tai chi• stretching• gardening• yoga• pilatesBalance (to prevent falls):• bowls• modified tai chi• SAYGo exercise programme• standing on one leg• yoga

Speak to your doctor before starting or increasing physical activity.Start off slowly and build up to the recommended daily physical activity levels.

A Word From Tauranga Village RadioTauranga Village Radio 1XT is a vintage radio station, and in keeping with the vintage status, we broadcast on the AM frequency on 1368 kHz.

Our broadcasting coverage area is from Katikati to Te Puke and to the base of the Kaimai Ranges.

We have recently installed a new transmitter. This has improved broadcasting clarity immensely and we have had very favourable feedback from our listeners regarding this.

Tauranga Village Radio plays a wide variety of nostalgic music from the 1940’s, 50’s 60’s etc. - Classical, Screen and Shows, Orchestrals, Instrumentals and Ballads for example. Tune into Tauranga Village Radio and sing along to the old favourites and recall memories of a musical past that is seldom heard today.

“RECOLLECTION” AND “RECONNECTION” THROUGH MUSIC

Most people enjoy music and music therapy is being used to

stimulate memory and “move” the mind in older adults with dementia.

Using music to evoke memories, feelings and sensations has been found to be very beneficial for various types of dementia and stroke affected persons.

Older wartime songs and music from the 40’s and 50’s onward, seems to bring lively memories to their minds and activates unconscious emotions by musical movement, singing, dancing etc, where able.

Music enables the listener to recall the memories that music “ignites” and stimulates and is especially beneficial for those persons who may have difficulty or be unable to communicate in other ways. Listening to music provides a way to utilize cognitive skills and assists in the possibility of providing a greater quality of life which could include the following :-• Memory recall• Positive moods• Stimulation - physical/mental/ emotional/wellbeing• Assists/promotes vocal fluency• Social interaction

The value of “Musical Therapy” is being recognised in assisting with the ongoing management of dementia and stroke patients.

Bank Deposit Rates - an AlternativeCurrently banks are offering between 2% and 4% p/a for medium term deposits returns is the inflation rate (the depreciation of the value of your dollar) which is currently between 1% - 2%. Accordingly over a period of some years, your “nest egg” might gradually whittle away so your buying power is less than what it is today. The alternative, would be property investing where you not only receive rent but your property will probably increase in value in the longer term. Set up right from the purchase date (see your accountant) the rent should cover any interest on the mortgage (if any) and any repairs and maintenance together with the rates and management fees. There is a shortage of rental properties at the moment and a wide range of tenants to select from. For further details contact Town & Country Property Management on (07) 579 3038

For just over a year now, Geoff Willacy from the Tauranga District Stamp Club has been providing local charities with half price postage to help lower their admin/postage costs. The organisations that are using the service, are very enthusiastic about the savings they’re achieving. Feedback has also been received from members who appreciate getting mail with postage stamps attached, especially postage stamps that have seldom been seen before.

Toby Tagg from Paper Plus, Tauranga, is also supporting this scheme by providing free envelopes and this allows Geoff and his helpers (mainly his wife Vivienne), to prepare orders in advance. Applying stamps to hundreds of envelopes is time consuming and needs planning, especially with stock management. New Zealand Post seldom issue stamps that can be used for standard postage therefore Geoff must work out the most efficient way to utilise 24c or $1.35 stamps to make up the current postage rates of $1.00, $2.00 or $3.00.Three and sometimes four stamps are applied to an envelope to achieve the correct postage.

The reason these stamps are not often seen is that post offices don’t promote them when they are issued. They are sold directly to stamp collectors by the NZ Philatelic Bureau, which is a division of NZ Post and treasured in ever growing collections. When the collector or his/her estate wish to dispose of the collection, Geoff makes them aware of his scheme where the donor will be paid for 50% of the postage value and the other 50% will be donated to the

charities they are supporting.

Many people who have been approached about donating to this scheme have welcomed the opportunity to do something so positive for the community however, Tauranga District Stamp Club are always looking for more donations of collections so that this scheme can continue.

These seldom seen stamps being used by the charities have an added value! If they are carefully cut from the envelope or newsletter without damaging them and when you have accumulated an envelope full, please return them to Age Concern so they can then be used for fundraising purposes.

Kind regards,

Geoff Willacy

Z Blokes Day Out SeptemberHi Red here,It was good to be back with the Blokes once again and a full bus headed over to Te Awamutu to have a look at their museum. We had a couple of newbies on board, welcome Doug and Darrell.

First, we stopped in at Z in 15th Ave for coffee and treats and were lucky enough to meet up with our Z sponsor during coffee. The Gillies are awesome with their support.

The BLOKES were treated to a rare sight with me in charge and I had to turn the windscreen wipers on occasionally but NO ONE got wet during the trip.

The museum in Te Awamutu was very professionally prepared and the blokes enjoyed the displays. Our local historian Jim Forrest spotted a couple of anomalies with the stated facts and helpfully pointed them out to us and the staff.

After the museum, we dined at the Redoubt Bar in Alexandra St and the history on the walls was as outstanding as the food.

Once again Z rocked it again. Thanks so much for your support over the last 5 years.

Next month we will head over to the Waikato again and visit the Cambridge Museum. This is an old Frontier town which dates back to the 1830’s and they have a few displays celebrating their history.

Look forward to seeing you then.

Sometimes we need a little more support than family or friends can offer. Whether it’s post-operative convalescence, palliative or general care at home, deciding what support is needed and where to find it can be challenging. The staff at New Zealand’s longest running private homecare provider, Miranda Smith Homecare, know how difficult these decisions can be.

Owner, Miranda Smith says: “People may be in crisis when they contact us, or they may require our services to assist with and plan their recovery from illness or injury. Whatever the reason, we believe choosing the right support is critical. Peace of mind comes with knowing the correct care is in place, in the familiar surroundings of home with family and friends nearby. This dramatically impacts recovery and helps to maintain independence”.

Miranda Smith Homecare offers a highly professional, caring and above all else, trustworthy service. Staff have the experience to ensure the stress of requiring in-home assistance doesn’t become a burden for those needing such support. When at-home care is your preferred choice, contact Miranda Smith Homecare, New Zealand’s most experienced private homecare provider.

Carpark closure at Tauranga Library updateDue to demolition work underway with Tauranga City Council’s Administration Building, the library car park on Hamilton Street is now fully closed. It is expected to remain closed until mid-December.Tauranga Library is remaining open throughout the completion of the work. Entrance is via the arcade from Willow Street or Wharf Street. There are two mobility parks now located in Masonic Park and one on Durham Street, near Baycourt. We understand that the carpark closure will be disruptive to many of our customers. Tauranga City Library will remain open throughout the completion of the work but those most affected may want to visit one of our branch libraries at Greerton, Papamoa and Mount Maunganui.A change to Mount Maunganui Library’s opening hoursWe’re happy to announce that Mount Maunganui Library’s Saturday hours have been extended to 4.00pm on Saturdays. Our Library Law series recommences in OctoberLyon O’Neale Arnold will be back in the library this October/November with free advice on a number of subjects.Enduring Powers of Attorney 4 October at 12.30 - 1.30pm and 5.30 - 6.30pm.We should all have Powers of Attorney. These are the documents that appoint a person who can make decisions on your behalf if you cannot. As we get older, or if we suffer from unexpected

Library Corner illness, we need to make sure that someone is ready to help us pay bills, sell our house and arrange any medical care on our behalf. When preparing a Power of Attorney, you need to consider who is best for the different roles – personal care and welfare, and property. We can highlight some of the issues and explain how these important documents work. Please register for this event by calling 577 7177 or by emailing: [email protected] Estate Planning and Wills 18 October at 12.30 - 1.30pm, and 5.30 - 6.30pm.Your will is one of the most important documents you can prepare during your lifetime. It sets out who you entrust all of your property to. Your Trustee(s) will be responsible for selling your home and giving your property to the people you love. Your Will also appoints guardians, lists your beneficiaries and sets out any of your last wishes.

Because your will is the last action taken in your name, it is important to have it exactly right. This session will cover the key parts of a Will, things you need to consider and any challenges that can be made if people are not happy with your decisions. Please register for this event by calling 577 7177 or by emailing: [email protected] Family Trusts 1 November at 12.30 - 1.30pm and 5.30 - 6.30pm.Family Trusts can/may be used for a variety of reasons. If you are in business they offer protection from creditors, and an opportunity to split income between family members. They protect the interests of future generations and can avoid estate litigation. Many people want to know about whether they will help with rest home subsidies.

Do You Know About CapTel?If your hearing is holding you back, captions on your phone or computer screen can help.

Phone CapTel is a telephone that connects to the internet and displays captions of your conversation while you’re speaking. Just like an ordinary phone, you listen to what the other person says and respond but what they say is also displayed on a screen for you to read. There is only a one-off cost to loan the phone for as long as you need it.

Web CapTel enables you to read the captions directly from a computer screen and requires no special equipment.

Both have help desk support.

You will need an internet connection and for more information, contact CapTel on 0800 227 835 or visit their website www.captel.co.nz

The Home Maintenance and Safety programme aims to help older people stay in their own homes longer by keeping on top of house maintenance and repairs. Often this work is put off because it feels like it is too hard or could cost too much.

There is an online checklist for inside and outside the house, which gives information on priority and who might do the repairs. You can download this tool from Age Concern’s website: www.ageconcerntauranga.org.nz A printed copy is available from our office at a small cost.

If you would prefer to have your home assessed by a professional company, Age Concern will refer you to Total Home Inspection Services, who have agreed to do the inspection for us at an agreed price. They will provide a report with photographs and give an indication of priority work. Age Concern will provide follow up assistance.

Give us a call if you would like more information on 578 2631.
