PRINCIPAL’S PIECE ANZAC Day I wish to thank all members of our school community who supported the ANZAC Day commemorations in Tatura on Monday. We had over a quarter of our students present and those who marched with me down Hogan Street were proud and respectful of the symbolic occasion. Lest we forget. Mother’s Day Stall and Raffle Don’t forget that Mother’s Day is fast approaching. Students are reminded to bring up to $10 to buy special gifts for their Mums and a bag to hide their special surprises. The stall will be held on Friday 6th May. Please remember to return your raffle tickets by Wednesday May 4th. We are also accepting donations to contribute towards the wonderful prizes that will be won. Camps Tonight the Foundation students are beginning their Camps Program with a fun afternoon tea from 3:30 to 5pm. The Grade 2s will be sleeping over tomorrow evening and the Grade 1 dinner is next week. Such an exciting time for our Junior Section! Full reports in next week’s newsletter. Parent Teacher Interviews Parent teacher interviews were held last Thursday and it was an excellent opportunity for parents to hear how their children were progressing with their learning this year. I appreciate the long hours that staff put in and the efficient way that parents moved from one interview to the next. I am keen to review our new approach to the interviews, so I invite parents to contact me with their thoughts. Oral Language information This free information session will be held here at Tatura Primary School on Monday May 9th at 9:30. See the attached information sheet. All parents of young children are encouraged to attend.

Cross Country Run See the report attached in the Senior News. School Photos It was a sunny, still day for our photos yesterday and everyone was looking their best for the individual and class photos. One option for families is to have a ‘Siblings’ photo. It was reported to me that some families had had trouble accessing the online booking option for siblings photos. As a result, I endeavoured to have all siblings’ photos taken. There is no obligation for you to purchase these photos– but if you want to make a late order for them, please contact Advanced Life Photography by Friday on 9852 1133 to make arrangements. I have been informed that all orders should be ready in about six weeks. Transition info for Grade 6 students Students in Grade 6 should have received their Secondary College Information booklet last week. Please note the dates for school info nights and tours. What are your children reading? We are focusing on reading this term. Tracey and I have been involved in some rich professional development with a reading guru– Di Snowball. We are keen to share some of our learnings with you through future newsletters. One of the questions that we want to pose is-’What are your children reading?’ Research shows that we should all be reading more fiction and non-fiction. We should be reading for interest, for learning and for relaxation. We should be focusing on new words and talking about what we have read. Please keep up with your child’s reading interests and remember to model good practice by reading with them and sharing your interest in books and other forms of reading materials.

Welcome back! Some important dates for Term 2.

Cross Country

Last Friday our 3-6 students competed in our school cross country. Congratulations to all students who showed great house spirit while competing. Henty were our overall winners for the day with a score of 239.

Leadership Conference

On Friday the 15th of April all the 5/6 student leaders along with Mr Miller and Mrs Bathman went to Bendigo for the Grip Student Leadership Conference. We had four sessions: How to Grow as a Leader; Bye, Bye Bullying; People to Influence; and Traffic Light Leader-ship!

Session 1: How to Grow as a Leader.

A person doesn’t become a better leader by

being chosen, they become a better leader by

continually growing. We learnt about constant

input, contribute to what is around you, com-

bine with others and core values.

Session 2: Bye, bye bullying.

Bullying is the result of people’s wrong action.

How to say bye, bye to bullying 1. Spot it out, 2.

Speak it out, 3. Stamp it out.

Session 3: People to Influence.

Leadership is about having a positive influence

on others. People we can influence are: Young-

er Students, Students in my Year, My Teachers

and the Wider Community.

Session 4: Traffic Light Leadership.

Red: Negative areas that should be stopped.

Amber: Areas that could be slowed. Green:

New areas to go forward with.

It was a great day and we all enjoyed it.

present class talks in weeks 7 and 8.

Sustainability - EnviroKids Waste Audit

On Tuesday 19th April, the EnviroKids completed a Waste Audit for our

school. Jean Young from Greater Shepparton City Council came to assist in the audit. We sorted the rubbish from our classrooms into four categories – organics (compost), recycling, paper and trash.

From the Audit, the EnviroKids found that most of the waste going into our bins is food and plastic waste. We were shocked to find whole sandwiches and whole pieces of fruit amongst the waste. “There’s so much fruit wasted. This is a whole apple!” said Chloe.

Megan commented, “you don’t think there’s much but when you look at it closely, there really is a lot!”

We also noticed that there was lots of paper going into the bins “but everyone has a recycle bin!” said Cassidy.

From our Audit, we are going to put some actions into place. These include:

Encouraging everyone to bring rubbish free lunches

Introducing composting buckets to the classrooms

Checking that every classroom has a recycle bin and that students know what to put in there

Last year, we were sending 15kg of rubbish to the tip every day - that's 3000kg every year! We hope to reduce this by putting our actions in place.

WINTER TENNIS SQUAD The 2016 winter tournament and training squad is for players wishing to keep playing tennis during the off season. There will be monthly tournaments and training sessions conducted from May to Septem-ber. The squad is open to all children aged from 8 through to 17 years of age. Anybody interested - please call David on 0427 004 457. AUSKICK The Tatura & District Auskick Centre will be again coming together at Tatura Park on Friday evenings at 5.30pm to play Grid Games. After the success of last season we are looking to again improve this program. This season we are looking at running games for Un-der 6s, Under 8s and Under 10s. Students from Kinder to Grade 4 are encouraged to participate. The great thing about playing in Tatura is that we play under the great lights of Tatura Park and the Tatura Netball Association runs at the same venue, this makes it a great family night. The Shepparton Junior Football League is running an Under 10s Saturday morning competition this sea-son, but we will still cater for Under 10s at Tatura also. The first session will be on Friday 15th April at 5.30pm. We are planning a meeting during the school holi-days to ensure we are set for the season ahead as we would like to get team managers and umpires ready earli-er.
