2016 ES TATE ZI NFANDEL DI CKINSON BL OCK, CI ENEGA VA LLEY Under Vine Since 1849 - Eden Rift is one of the oldest, continually producing estate vineyards in California. A remote pacific refuge located under the shadow of the Gavilan Mountain Range, the estate rests on the San Andreas Fault and is part of the Cienega Valley AVA. Only 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean, this site benefits from an ideal, temperate maritime climate as well as the coveted calcareous soils required for the cultivation of vivid, energetic winegrapes. Planted in 1906, the heritage block is a small, 0.7-acre block adjacent to Eden Rift’s historic Dickinson House. Own rooted and head-trained, the gnarled ancient vines are low-yielding and treasured for their concentrated and complex flavors. CELLAR NOTES In the early morning of October 3, 2016, beautiful, old-vine fruit was hand-harvested and immediately brought to the winery. Crushed and de-stemmed, the must was transferred to a small, open-top fermentation tank. Remaining in tank over the next 13 days, the juice was fermented on indigenous yeast while getting pumped over twice daily. Once pressed the wine was racked to a total of five French oak barrels. Ultimately, this rare, small-lot wine aged approximately 15 months before being bottled on January 12, 2018. WINEMAKER NOTES “The one-hundred-and-tenth vintage for these vines, the 2016 growing season was very mild and consistent. The only notable weather occurrence was a bit of rain and high winds that the estate vineyard experienced in late April and May, while the plants were in flower and set. Beyond that, the balance of the season never really saw any heat spikes or other climatic extremes. Given the idyllic nature of the growing season the fruit enjoyed extended hang-times which resulted in great flavor development for this, Eden Rift’s inaugural Zinfandel bottling from the Dickinson Block.” “An intriguing and nuanced bottling, the 2016 Zinfandel from Dickinson Block is a prime example of the concentration and prowess of old vines. In the bouquet, aromas of red currant, bright cherry and sagebrush provide an opening act for the fleshy, almost tropical fruits and cocoa powder that highlight the wine. Fresh and bright acidity is balanced with rich, round tannins that showcase layers of bramble and ripe, red and black fruit flavors as well as baking spice characters found on the palate. 10034 Cienega Road | Hollister, California 95023 | (831) 636-1991 2016 ZI NFANDEL DI CKINSON BL OCK CI ENEGA VA LLEY EDENRIFT.COM HARVEST DATA Harvest Dates Block | Clone(s) Average Tons/Acre WINE DATA Composition (percentage by clone) Barrel Program Fermentation pH Total Acidity Alcohol Bottling Date Release Date Case Production October 3, 2016 Block G | Heritage Clone 2.46 100% Zinfandel Heritage Clone 100% French oak | 20% New Aged 15 months 100% Open-Top 100% Native 3.64 6.33 g/L 15.5% January 12, 2018 April 2018 114 cs (750 ml)
