Over the last year, Taste the Local Di erence (TLD) has added a lot of new territory. For the rst time ever we are including all of northern Michigans food & farming community both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Thats why weve nearly doubled the size of this publication, the 13th edition of our annual Guide to Local Food. Were using our decade-plus of experience in local food marketing
to serve communities in 37 counties. Growth beyond our former 10-county service area began last year, with Washtenaw County, in southeast Michigan. So, in 2016, TLD is publishing not one, but two editions of the Guide to Local Food. The second version will debut in southeast Michigan this July. Beyond growing our service area, TLD is making a renewed
commitment to our mission of helping food businesses and the communities we serve realize the economic value of local food, while ensuring that fresh, healthy, local food is available to all consumers. We know our health, and the health of our communities, is directly
connected to the food we eat. That is why we strongly believe that everyone should have access to fresh, healthy, local food. Access is about a ordability, its about awareness, and its about
education. We hope youll use this guide as a resource to nd local food throughout northern Michigan, and share it with friends andfamily. We promise to do our part: read on and youll learn more about initiatives were supporting in our area to bring more good food to more and more people.

MEET the COVER MODEL:Morganic Farm, near Fife Lake, has been raising chickens for over 11 years. And this handsome Araucana "takes the honor of being the most beautiful bird weve ever had, said owner Stuart Kunkle. When this exotic rooster chick came to Morganic as a bonus in their hatchery order, who would have expected he'd be a star. In front of the camera he struck pose after pose and Michael Pohleman captured this perfect cover look. This particular rooster is gentle around people and guards his girls very bravely, like a knight in shining armor. Morganic Farm plans to use this gorgeous guy and a few other roosters to begin their own hatchery later this year. You can pick up Mor-ganic Farms free range, non-gmo eggs at the farm on M-113, Oryana Natural Food Market, or join the egg share CSA with a pick-up loca-tion on Three Mile Road in Traverse City. Learn more about Morganic Farm and their protein/vegetable CSA shares by looking them up at localdi erence.org.

Goodwill Farm to Freezer
Winter in Northern Michigan presents a formidable challenge when it comes to sourcing local produce. While season extension systems and storage crops provide great options, the depths of winter still result in limited local produce availability. Exciting as these systems are, additional local produce choices are always a welcome joy in the winter months. Thankfully, here in northern Michigan were blessed with the Goodwill Farm to Freezer program.Goodwills Farm to Freezer purchases fruits and vegetables

Farm to Freezer products including everything from cherries, peaches, and blueberries to asparagus, carrots, and romanesco are available to retail consumers in more than 25 grocery stores. And it doesnt end there! Larger packages are also available for restaurants and institutions. In fact, the whole operation began with the hope of bringing more local produce into school cafeterias and thats just what theyre doing. Students throughout the region are getting e_ci[ed aIo\[ local Z[ra^IerrieZ Il\eIerrieZ ca\lio^er and carrot medleys. For the farmers, Farm to Freezer creates an new outlet for
their products, allowing more to be grown and sold than would normally be consumed by customers during the summer months. In 2015, the program purchased 120,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables from farms throughout the region, and in 2016 they expect to purchase an incredible 180,000 pounds. Farm to Freez-
er has also begun production of an organic line of local fruits and vegetables to reach another consumer and producer audience. Not only is Farm to Freezer creating a much-needed outlet for
local produce, but theyre also helping an underserved popula-tion get back on their feet in the process. Many people in northwest Lower Michigan hold the Oleson family name in high-regard. For some, its about the gifts the Oleson Family Foundation makes to local organizations; for others, its the regions ve Olesons Food Stores. But either way, its clear that the Oleson family cares deeply about strengthening our community. Gerald and Frances Oleson opened a small grocery
store on Front Street in Traverse City in June 1926, and lived in the apartment directly above it. With commu-nity support the business grew into a larger location just down the street and later expanded to Petoskey, Charlevoix, and Manistee, with the involvement of their sons. Thirty-six years after opening their rst location, in 1962, the couple founded the Oleson Family Foundation with the goal of continually performing good works in northwest Lower Michigan. Today, Gerald and Frances grandchildren and great-
grandchildren continue to manage the operation of Olesons Food Stores. And their familys founding legacy is still deeply rooted in the business. I take incredible pride in our name and guard its repu-
tation to the fullest extent, said co-owner Brad Oleson My family history brought us to where we are. I take a lot of pride in that, and I back it up 100 percent. The Olesons relationship with the local community
is an important way they di erentiate themselves from their larger competitors. As a regional grocer, theyve
built important one-on-one connections with both their customers and local food producers. We try to bring in as much local as we can, said
Oleson, and to bring in niche items or unique products people are asking for. With local products in their stores, the Olesons use
Taste the Local Di erence branding to di erentiate local food on the shelves and in the produce cool-ers. Fresh, local produce and proteins are an Olesons specialty and the company has become well-known for ensuring these items are regularly available. Larger national retailers may sometimes be able to of-
fer lower prices, but people are realizing that price isnt always the most important factor in food purchasing de-cisions. Educated consumers are comparing price with quality and communitywhen a product is cheaper, but the money spent on it leaves the local community, theyre considering the real cost of that product instead. Businesses owned and operated by local people often
contribute much more to the vibrancy and well-being of the community as a whole. Spending your dollars at local stores with local products is a crucial way to show your support. We give our customers the service and the selection
theyre looking for, said Oleson And we believe in our people. Our employees are the ones that have built this company and without them we would not be here.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTYGRAND TRAVERSE COUNTYLocal Food & Farms of
Grand Traverse Countys rolling hills overlook inland lakes and miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. Grand Traverse is derived from the
French phrase for long crossing due to its location along the bay
by the same name. The county is a major tourist destination known
for its abundant recreational activities, natural beauty and diverse
agriculturefarmland in Grand Traverse County makes up about 18
percent of the total land area. The regions first permanent settlement
was made on whats known today as the Old Mission Peninsula,
one of northwest Michigans best-known wine regions. Some of
the regions first Riesling grapes, for which the area is known, were
planted here more than 40 years ago. The county is also home
to Traverse Cityknown as the Cherry Capital of the World.

Wine grapes are a special crop for northern Michigan. They represent a signi cant economic value for the wine they eventually become, and they also provide a visual appeal that is a signature of our landscape. A trip to any one of the wineries or vineyards listed here will set your senses alight. Sitting in a northern Michigan tast-ing room, looking out over picturesque rolling hills with acres of vines, will provide you memories for a lifetime.

Free-range, antibiotic-free Tibetan yak meat. One of the healthiest red meats in the world. Extremely high in protein and low in fat, yak meat has Omega-3 levels that are greater than some fish and chicken. It is arguably the lowest in cholesterol of the red meats. Not to mention its delicate and unique sweet taste!
La Viande - The Red Meat of the South American Altiplano Same nutritional benefits as yak, but with a taste similar to highend beef!
Fresh vegetables grown on our ranch - pesticide free! Fiber and fiber products. Farm tours to get up close and learn about our unique and sustainable livestock.

Benzie, Manistee, Wexford and Missaukee counties represent the southern and western-most edges of what we consider
northwest Michigan. Together they account for almost half of the
farmland in the entire region with approximately 204,787 acres
dedicated to agriculture. The farmland varies from commodity
farms and small-scale farming, to livestock and wooded farmland.
Missaukee County produces the largest acreage of Christmas
trees in Michigan, with Wexford and Manistee counties
among Michigans top 10 for tree production as well. Benzie
County earns its place as one of the states top 10 tart cherry
producers. The region is well known for its forests and rivers,
attracting tourists and vacationers throughout the year.
