Dr Michael ShipstoneMichael graduated from Queensland University

in 1984 and worked in a number of different practice and industry positions. In 1995 he started a residency in Melbourne with additional periods of study at the University of

California, Davis and Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge.

Mike is a Fellow of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists (Veterinary Dermatology) and a Diplomate of the

American College of Veterinary Dermatology.

He has published in Australia and overseas and has presented / lectured in Australia, New Zealand, North America, South-East Asia and India. He is past President of the Dermatology chapter of the ANZCVSc (2002–2015), adjunct Professor University of Queensland and Director of Dermatology for Animals.

This year we have some excellent speakers that will provide targeted sessions for veterinarians and veterinary nurses on a variety of topics within their expertise.

Speakers

Dr Brendan CarmelDr Carmel works in a small animal practice in the northeast suburbs of Melbourne where over 90% of the caseload is unusual pet. He is the co-founder and past president of the Unusual and Exotic Pet Veterinarians special interest

group of the AVA; a founding member of both the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians

and the Association of Reptilian and Amphibian Veterinarians.

He is the veterinary consultant to the Melbourne Museum, lecturer in wildlife and unusual and exotic pet medicine at the University of Melbourne and James Cook University Townsville.

He is a frequent speaker at national and international veterinary events.

Brendan was awarded the 2015 Oxbow Exotic Mammal Health Award for excellence and innovation in the field of exotic mammal heath – the first person from the Southern Hemisphere to win this award.

Dr Brett Stone Prior to commencing BVSc studies, Brett completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences with Class I Honours at James Cook University, North Queensland. His honours research was in the field of Microbiology and Immunology

and focused on the detection of Helicobacter pylori in domestic cats. Brett graduated as a

veterinarian from the University of QLD with Class I Honours in 2001 and worked in mixed animal practice

on the outskirts of Brisbane for two years before returning to the University of QLD to undertake an internship/residency funded by Vetnostics in veterinary pathology. As a pathology intern Brett also concurrently undertook a research masters project investigating the colonisation and excretion of E.coli serotype O157 in adult cattle.

In 2006, after completing the internship, Brett lectured in clinical pathology at the University of QLD, was a contracted pathologist at Vetnostics and attained membership qualifications with the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in Veterinary Pathology.

In 2007–2008, Brett worked as a diagnostic pathologist at Cytopath Ltd in the UK, then returning to Vetnostics in 2008. After a brief hiatus, Brett accepted the role of supervising pathologist at Vetnostics in 2014. Brett has extensive experience in cytology and histopathology with special interest in dermatopathology, immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry.

Dr Graham SwinneyDr Swinney is a specialist in canine medicine and is working as an Internal Medicine Consultant at IDEXX Laboratories, as well as keeping doing clinical work and teaching.

Graduated from the University of Sydney in 1987. Worked in small animal medicine training

positions at Massey University (1988-1990) and University of Queensland (1991-1992) before returning

to the University of Sydney. Since then have worked at Washington State University, private specialist practice in Sydney and the University of Sydney again before IDEXX.

Dr Katrina WardKatrina Ward is a Tasmanian veterinarian, graduating from the University of Queensland in 1992. She has since been working in private practice, in Tasmania and England, initially in mixed practice and later focusing on small

animal medicine and surgery. In 2008 she became a Member of the Australian and New

Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in the field of Veterinary Behaviour.

Since mid-2009 she has been working solely in the field of behavioural medicine, taking referrals from all over Tasmania. She is an active committee member of the Behaviour Interest Group of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVBIG), currently being the President.

She has co-authored many of their handouts, given multiple presentations to veterinarians, businesses and associations involved in animal care, and has experience with the media. She has also worked with her dog, Lucy, as a Delta volunteer in aged hospices. As a founding member of the Polite Pets Month committee (an AVBIG initiative) and through her contact with multiple education bodies, she is eager to help promote this vital component of veterinary medicine, for the improvement of animal welfare and the maintenance of compassionate human-animal bonds.
