Some Geographical FactsTasmania is the smallest state (68,401 square kilometres) in

Australia consisting of the island of Tasmania and 334 surrounding islands.

● Tasmania is situated 240 kilometers to the south of mainland Australia, separated by Bass Strait.

● Tasmania is located between the latitudes of 41 and 44 degrees south known as “Roaring Forties” for the strongest winds and large waves.

The Origin of the Name and Nicknames

The state was named after the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman who discovered the island in 1642.

The official nickname of Tasmania is the “Apple Isle” because it is one of the world’s major apple producers.

Tasmania is also known as the “Island of Inspiration” and “Natural State” due to its large areas of pristine nature.

“Tassi” is the coloquial expression for the state.

Tasmania is called the “Holiday Isle” due to the large amount of facilities for entertainment.

The coat of arms of TasmaniaThe shield is supported by two Tasmanian tigers (extinct). The images of wheat, apples, hops, sheep on the shield are the State’s main rural industries. The red lion holding a pick and a shovel symbolizes mining activities.

The motto of Tasmania is “Ubertas et fidelitas / Fertility and Faithfulness”.

Crocoite was proclaimed as the State mineral in 2000.

The Tasmanian Blue Gum was proclaimed as the State floral emblem in 1962.

Tasmania has the smallest population in Australia, with more than 500,000 people.

Its cities are tiny and uncongested.

The largest cities include Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie. About forty percent of residents live in and around Hobart, the capital city.

Hobart

Hobart was founded in 1804 as a penal colony.

Hobart is famous for its Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens holding historic plant collections.

Port Arthur Historic Site

Port Arthur Historic Site is situated 60 kilometers to the south-east of Hobart. In 1833 it became a prison for the hardest convicted British criminals. It was a real living hell.

Now it is one of the greatest tourist destinations.

Tasmanian eventsTaking a trip to Tasmania you are just bound to visit different exciting events, from cultural festivals to world-class sporting fixtures.

The Falls Music & Arts Festival is a music festival held on New Year’s Eve in Tasmania’s Marion Bay. It is famous for its music performances, dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret and other art forms.

Junction Arts Festival is a young multi-arts festival held in Launceston. It lasts five days. Leading local, national and international artists take part there.

The Sydney to Hobart Yacht RaceIf you are keen on sports,

visit the annual world-class Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race starting in Sydney on Boxing Day and finishing in Hobart. The race distance is approximately 1,170 km. It is widely considered to be one of the most difficult yacht races in the world.

The record was set by Wild Oats XI in 2012 when it crossed the line in 1 day, 18 hours, 23 minutes and 12 seconds.

The Taste of TasmaniaThe Taste Festival is a large

food and wine festival held in Hobart’s Salamanca and in waterfront areas from 28 December to 3 January. You can get secrets of Tasmanian’s master chefs at a cooking workshop or take a food tour through Hobart.

Moreover, the festive programme includes a large amount of sporting activities, face painting, buskers, performers and other family entertainment.

of natural wonders. It has unique natural beauty, abundant wildlife. Almost 45 percent of Tasmania lies in reserves and national parks. The Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area is a World Heritage Site.

Tasmanian AnimalsTasmania is a natural haven for Australian wildlife.

Unique animals live here.

The Tasmanian Devil is an unofficial symbol of Tasmania. The Tasmanian devil is a carnivorous marsupial found only in Tasmania. It is black in colour and has fierce tempers. The Tasmanian devils screech and growl while eating or searching for food. If you want to learn more about Tasmanian devils, click here.

The eastern quoll is sometimes called native cat. It is endemic to Tasmania. The eastern quolls are brown or black. Small white spots cover the body except for the bushy tail which may have a white tip. The eastern quolls are nocturnal animals.

Tasmanian BirdsThe Yellow Wattlebird is the largest of the

honey eaters. It is endemic to Tasmania. The bird got its name due to the wattles in the corners of its mouth. It is dark-coloured, has a black-streaked crown and a long yellow-orange wattle. The bird is famous for its harsh voice, often compared to a person coughing or vomiting.

The Swift Parrot is a small, streamlined, bright grass-green parrot. It has a dusky red spike-shaped tail, a red forehead and throat. It breeds only in Tasmania where it nests only in hollows in mature and senescened eucalypts.

Tasmanian Plants

The Huon Pine is one of the slowest-growing and longest-living plants in the world. It can grow to an age of 3,000 years or more. Only the bristle-cone pine of North America lives longer. The Huon Pine is found in western Tasmania, on the Central Plateau and in the Huon Valley.

Pandani is found only in Tasmania and is the largest heath plant in the world. You can find enormous stands of pandanis around Dove Lake at Cradle Mountain.
