Narrative Within the opening , Pushing buttons introduces a young working

class woman who seems to be depressed , this is connoted from the anti-depressants we denote at 0.19.Therefore the character represents the lost boy archetype as she is left in an isolated/vulnerable position within the workplace. As a result she becomes mentally and physically trapped as all her buttons are pushed to the limit unable to seek help and express her inner feelings as she cannot afford to lose her job or the opportunity to become independent. We show the mundanity of her going to work through the different shots which enforces the working environment she is stemmed from in the narrative. These themes will therefore demonstrate British Social Realism at its very best.

Our narrative wasinitially unique becausewe decided to usean Asian business womenrather than a stereotypicalwhite woman , as in Britishsociety , Asian people are oftenSeen in lower pay working jobsand white people are in higher pay working jobs, therefore our narrative challenges stereotypical British society conventions.

Genre

The BSR genre is influenced by working class people. We wanted to represent British realism which is why we used ordinary people as actors. The opening sequence also fits the bsr genre because it is set in the gritty location of London which will reflect the target audience being predominantly from London. The genre is also known for showcasing controversial themes , and the opening sequence signifies depression and sexual harassment which are explicit themes that often associated with this genre compared a Hollywood film.

Camera,angle,shot movement and position.

The technology used in our opening sequence were : A hand held camera, tripod and a dolly which the school had gave us access to. The use of the hand held camera demonstrated unsuspected movements, unrehearsed filming of reality, and will provide a sense of a dynamical vision, fascination, instability and nervousness to the audience.

The use of the hand held camera jerky movements was used when she’s on the train looking anxious; this is symbolic as it constructs the characters thoughts to be unstable as the use of the insecure movements creates a tremulous atmosphere. The use of a dolly would be used throughout the whole footage as there will be continuous movements. The use of movement will create more atmosphere as the audience will be more involved in the movie.

Some shots were filmed with a hand-held camera to enforce realism. These daunting shots from 00.7-0.11 is one of the conventions within bsr films - the shaky footage gives the impressionto the audience that they are there, there is more realism and feeling because it's natural as if you are watching this through someones eyes rather than watching scenes from an ordinary film with steady cams which also focused on the genre.

The sound we used through out our opening sequence was music. Music is non-diagetic and therefore gave the atmosphere to our footage. The song 'Lights fade' enforced the themes of depression and sexual harassment through the lyrics such as 'No one will touch you‘ . This is something we wanted to do to signify to the audience what the protagonist was going through , therefore our narrative was made much clearer. BSR films often use the convention of music to highlight the condition the characters are in which is achieved in our opening sequence also.

The typography we used were white superimposed graphics. BSR films do not use fancy typography because bsr films are made to represent mundane situations within Britain, and white was a colour we chose because we wanted to show the lifeless persona of the character and the lack of colour also reinforces the convention of a dull atmosphere in this genre.

At 0.32 , we can denote a midshot of the protagonist picking up a button. The button is an icon which links to the idea in the narrative about women feel trapped. The button connotes the protagonist’s buttons being pushed in society , such controversy fits the bsr genre and adds enigma because the audience are not sure what the button represents till later on.
