Theme: Architectural Exploration of Salford Quays

Predicted final outcome

I would like my final outcome of my project to consist of images of places around Salford Quays, such as Media City, The Lowry Centre, Old Trafford football and cricket ground and the river that runs through the quays.In addition, I would also like to get some shots of Manchester City centre itself. Here, I would like to get photos of the Arndale, the Etihad Stadium and the Manchester wheel.

Reasons for selection of theme (including inspiration from the work of others)

I like photography by Simon Kennedy, who took pictures of shopping centres, well-known places and overall views of London. They were mostly taken at night and at later points in the day. The different colours of places in London that appear at night time make the places stand out more and look really eye-catching. I think these photos appear to be better at night time compared to the day time and also, places look a lot more different at night time.

Matt Livey also produces good work. His images are taken at both night time and day time. He also uses various settings on his camera and goes

to different angles in order to capture the best aspects of images. He has done construction and abandoned sites, as well as interiors and exteriors.

David Churchill’s photos are also quite varied. He takes pictures of yachts and rivers, inside shops, living spaces and work spaces. He also captures people in his photos more than the other two photographers do. His work is also detailed and very clear. This is how I would like to capture my photos. David Churchill also took photos of areas with a lot of colour and that are eye-catching.

The photo imaging equipment and medium that will be used and why

I will either be using the Canon 7D camera or the Nikon D30100 camera to take the photos.

Techniques that will be used and how they will help convey the visual message

The techniques I would like to use in my shoot is depth of field because I feel the effect of a blurred background makes the intended building have more emphasis and stand out a lot more, so it draws you straight to that rather than what is in the background. Shutter speed and ISO will also be important settings to use in my shoot in order to get the right amount of light in my photos, especially considering I will be shooting outside, both at day time and night time.

Location of shoot Salford Quays is known for many things. It has Media City and the BBC, The Lowry centre which is known for its shops and food court, Old Trafford football ground, home of Manchester United, and Old Trafford cricket ground. There are also nice views around Salford quays consisting of the river that runs through it which can be relaxing when you are having a walk around the Quays or at a restaurant.

Manchester City centre is a bit more of a lively place. It has the Arndale shopping centre, which like the Lowry centre, is known for its many shops and food court. Manchester city centre also has many other high street shops. There is the Manchester wheel located in Piccadilly Gardens and further into Manchester is the Etihad stadium which is the home of Manchester City football club.
