Why Have Job Roles?

Within the media industry it is a well-known fact that you cannot produce and film a music video or

film by yourself. Also if you take on a lot of people willing to help you with the filming of a certain

film or music video they are not going to do it for free so on the other hand you will have to keep a

good eye on your budget or else you will have to pay off even more money to a certain company.

When shooting footage there are loads of different job roles to make the film or music video a

success, for example some job roles are;

- Film Director

- Film Producer

- Actors and Actresses

- Camera Man

These are just a few job roles within the filming of a music video, but there are many more and each

job role is extremely important to get the film or music video to its best possible standard so it has a

better chance of succeeding in the media industry.

Key Roles in Media Production

There are multiple key roles while the production side of things take place, such as all of the Pre -

Production, Production and Post-Production. One main key role during production is the Production

Manager this role is one of the biggest roles during production because the man or woman who is a

production controls everything in production. So all of the Pre-Production, Production and Post-

Production have to suit her or his needs which mainly are professional standards. But there are

other job roles such as a team leader that may control one segment of a production stage.

Director

When shooting or filming for a music video or a film, the film Director is in charge of the film. But his

main responsibility is to make sure the film’s footage is shot on time so it can be released on the

correct date. The director also controls most of the job roles within the filming of a music video or

film but, due to the amount of the director’s power it does not mean he owns the film. But the

Production Manager or Producer

The production manager or producer is in charge of all of the production segments that take place

within Pre, Production and Post. He also takes part in some of the shooting or filming of a music

video or a film. His job role is also very important because he has to make sure all of the production

work is done to a professional standard, so he can kind of make it easier for the director when he

comes to shoot the footage for the film, but the Producer also helps in filming to make sure the

director follows most of their Pre-Production work so it does not get confusing in a certain

Production department.

Casting Director

The casting director is in charge of job roles before they get to the filming side of things. So this

person’s responsibility is to make sure all of the roles that need to be signed to make the film or

music video a success. This person’s role is very important because if he does not complete his task

the music video will never be filmed or acted out.

Screenwriter

A Screenwriter comes up with the idea for a film or a music video. For example a screenwriter will

make money in the film industry by selling his idea to a film company so it can get Produced and

hopefully turn into a successful film. The screenwriter also tends to write the script for the film

because he has the best knowledge of a specific film so the screenwriter will be the best person to

write a script for the film or music video.

Sound Operator

A sound operator is more often known as an audio engineer. This job role within the film or media or

music industry is also quite an important job role. This person’s responsibility is to make the theme

tune or main song by mixing songs together to match a certain film genre or music video genre. The

people that mainly take on this career are people that are able to use technology to produce sound

that can match a specific theme for example they could make sound for a radio, film or music video.

Camera Person

The camera operator mainly leads his camera crew to do the correct cinematography angles that

match the director’s needs. So on the other hand the camera operator must follow off the director’s

needs throughout filming. This person plays a very important role within the filming of a music video

or a film because without this person playing this specific job role the film wouldn’t be able to

control all of the job roles within the filming of a music video or a film.

Editor

When all of the footage is filmed for the music video the editor will then collect all of the footage so

he can combine it all together to make it into a successful music video. Therefore this editor must

get his editing skills up to professional standards so the music video looks great when they come to

publish it to YouTube or other social media websites. The editor is actually one of the most crucial

job roles for without him the music video will not be edited.
