SUMMARISING RESEARCH FINDINGS

1. General Information surrounding Music Magazines Research

Each magazine has their own target audience in mind on production; in order to sell these magazines they must first do research into the sort of things the target audience would like to be featured in the magazine.

In addition to target audience, each magazine must maintain a style/theme which makes it stand out from others on the market.

They need to deliver information through their features which should interest the reader and entertain them.

Most significantly the magazines market must be aware of AIDA

A – Attract audience, use of bright colours, image and text

I – Interest, articles and sell lines should entice the audience.

D – Desire, lure the reader by adding competitions, posters or give freebies

A – Act – people to buy your product, motivate them into purchasing

2. Research into real music magazines; generic conventions of a music magazine

Front covers must have: a masthead at the top barcode/price/date

a main imagesell lines

Contents pages must have: the word “contents” a date/issue number a range of images anchored with text and page numbers

either a consistent logo or magazine title.Contents clearly linked with cover in terms of style and genre (house colours etc)

Double page spreads must have: dominant image and anchored text headline (short and snappy) subheading (summarising the article) introductory paragraph copy/text should be written in paragraphs and columns layout

All 3 parts of the magazine should clearly be connected, therefore being similar to each other in appearance so are recognisable to each other, this can be achieved by using a range of elements including: same font and colour choices throughout magazine title/slogan featured on all 3 pages appearance of content (matching front cover and contents) contents match that of chosen genre association

3. Chosen Genre Research

MY CHOSEN GENRE IS HOUSE MUSIC AND AFTER RESEARCH I FOUND THAT…

“House music remains popular in both clubs and in the mainstream pop scene”; this tells me some of the activities associated with these genre, which I could include in my magazine.

“House music has also fused with several other genres creating fusion subgenres, such as Euro house, tech house, and electro house”; showing that I have a wide range of audience to cater for.

“Celebrated the late 1980s Madchester and rave scenes through the use of neon colors” suggests what type of colors to use in production.

“Clubbing/raving is viewed as a community thing”; this suggests that in my magazine we need to make people feel they are part of a group that share the same interest, I could accomplish this by using more public input.

RESEARCH INTO MY CHOSEN STYLE MODEL MAGAZINE; WHICH IS MIXMAG. BELOW ARE SOME

I HAVE ALSO FOUND THAT A SPECIFIC TYPE OF IMAGING IS USED IN THIS TYPE OF MAGAZINE GENRE PRODUCTION

In House Music Magazines, images are normally very different to that of a normal magazine; photos are normally busier and do not normally feature standing poses. They are very bright, unless in a dark location where the colours normally contrast against each other. The picture should give feeling of the atmosphere that the genre brings. They feature bands, dj’s and wide contextualising shots of locations.

4. Research from my target audience

Overall conclusions of my target audience where reached during questionnaires and interviews. I can conclude

that: It is clear that my front cover needs to be bright and eye-catching and should be a single image. As for content, I need to make sure it is varied and includes exclusive content such as reviews of events and theme-relative images of House Music to suit my audience. My content should also be more related to a festival or concert as this is what seems to be the most enjoyed. It would be nice to not only incorporate House Music Artists suggested but also other aspects of music which my target audience like as they would probably be more inclined if the magazine was more suitable personalised to an individual. However as I need to stick to my specific genre, I would have to make sure that there is a link between this artists and house music, for example a remixed track or guest appearance. People said that they didn’t currently read any magazines due to limited time, knowing this it would be a good idea not to overwhelm the reader by bulk information but alternatively make an ‘easy-read’ magazine. People said that a cheap price would encourage them to buy a magazine, in conjunction with the answer of ‘How much would you be willing to pay for a music magazine?’ of £1-£4, I think about £2.50 would be an appropriate price margin. Colours should correspond with the associations of the genre, therefore lively and contrasting tones. I must also make sure that I use the right amount of images and text, to make it a worthwhile read but yet not to discourage reading. Finally, my target audience insisted that the language of the magazine should be informal but not with the use of slang (connotations of chavy and child-like tendencies which juxtaposes my initial theme).

Having summarized these results I am now ready to complete my formal proposal and start planning my own music magazine.
