What is a Ecological Footprint?An ecological footprint is the

impact of a person or its community on the environment, in terms of how much natural resources are required to sustain their current lifestyles.

your ecological footprint?

The next slide lists 10 practical strategies that you can implement to help reduce your ecological footprint.

Reducing your consumptionTurn off lights and appliances

when not using them or leaving your home.

Appliances on stand-by mode continuously suck in unnecessary energy even when they are not in use.

Reducing your consumptionReduce water usage by turning

off the tap while brushing your teeth.

Try to take a shower every two or three days. If you can’t, at least just take one shower per day, and not two.

Drink cold water if you can so you won’t have to waste energy boiling it.

Reducing your consumptionTake shorter showers.Refrain from taking baths as they

waste much more waters than showers.

Use biodegradable or green products.

RecycleMany products such as metal,

cardboard, and plastics can be recycled.

If your community doesn't have a recycle program, urge them to create one.

As well, try to buy products that are made from recycled waste

ShareCarpooling is a way of driving

with more than one people. Carpooling is a great way to help reduce fuel consumption.

Share with your friends, family, and neighbours on clothes, tools, and appliances so that each person won’t have to buy the same thing.

Reuse resourcesReusing is another way you can

reduce your ecological footprint.Instead of buy a new product,

such as brand new clothes, go for products or clothes that have been used.

For example, thrift shop stores usually sell cheap products and clothes that are used.

Most of the time, these used products look like new!

Reuse resourcesAs well, rather than throwing

away your old computer, clothes, or television, try to donate it to a charity or give it to someone who desperately needs it.

Don’t throw away that empty container. Use it to hold something else.

Stress businessesResearch on how local businesses

can reduce their business practice impacts on the environment. Then report your and present your findings to local businesses, and ask them to change their practices.

You can also write to them or call them to show your concern about their impacts on the environment.

Evaluate your energy consumptionMany power companies offer to

help home and businesses to reduce their power consumption by sending in experts to audit a building.

Taking on the experts advices can help you save 6 to 7 percent on energy use.

Purchase local foods or organicsStore-bought foods are usually

sprayed and treated with many pesticides to kill off pests. These pesticides are fatal to our environment and water streams.

Organics are locally grown food that are expensive; however, is natural as they are not treated with any pesticides or hormones.

Purchase local foods or organicsBy buying organics and local

foods, you are supporting local farmers, and as well avoiding the risk of GMO’s, and pesticides.

As well, you are protecting our environment when purchasing organics and local foods.

Taste better and is very good to your health too!

Purchase energy efficient appliancesReplace incandescent light bulbs with

fluorescent bulbs which are more energy efficient and money saving.

Retrofitting a building with energy saving appliances can cut down the energy bill by 20 to 30 percent.

Washers and dryers can be replaced by their energy efficient counterparts to reduce energy consumption as these two appliances are the king of energy wasters.

Walk or take public transportationIf your destination is short,

refrain from using the car to get there, but instead walk there. Maybe walk with a group of friends.

However, if you have to go somewhere further, try to take public transportation.

Walking is the most greenest option as you are not emitting carbon or harming the environment in any way.

Boycott productsBoycott products that harms the

environment.Try to buy products that comes

with less packaging.Be aware of where the product

comes from and how its made.Refrain from buying products that

you know are made by workers paid under wage and from non-renewable resources.

Boycott productsSince businesses and stores

depend on consumers to thrive, boycotting environmentally products can force businesses and stores to change their practices.

Don’t purchase items made by child labourers or workers who has their human dignity harmed.
