Advertising Industry

Photography is a big part of the advertising industry. It can be used to make posters, billboards and advertisements in publications. Photos can also be used in TV advertisements as well. Some times when advertising a product the would use video footage and end on a still image. To advertise films the film companies would create posters using photos that were taken on set. These photos would be used to express what the film is all about. The photographer would use different settings depending on what the film is about. In an action film the photographer may use a slow shutter speed. In a horror film the photographer may try to make the image as dark as possible.

Fashion Industry

Patrick Demarchelier is a French Photographer born in 1943. He is well known for his work with Vogue. Patrick has worked on advertising campaigns with Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren.

Steven Meisel is an American Photographer that has also worked with Vogue. He has also taken photos of Madonna for Vanity Fair and a Louis Vuitton campaign.

Mario Testino is a fashion photographer from Peru. Like many famous fashion photographers he has worked with Vogue, Vanity Fair and Gucci. He is well known for his photos of many famous people such as Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Peter Lindbergh is a German Photographer who was born in 1944. He has worked with many different Vogue Magazines such as Italian, German and English Vogue. You will find most of his photos in a black and white style, similar to early German films.

Photography is a big part of the fashion industry. Photos are often taken of models wearing different clothes which are then put into different fashion magazines. These magazines will then advertise the modelled clothes.

Music Industry

Photography is often used in the music industry to advertise. In music based magazines images are shown of artists performing live. Some photographers take photos for album covers, often of the band or singer. On other occasions the photographer may take landscape photos for the cover of the album.

Kevin Cummins is a photographer from England who is famous for his photos of singers such are Mick Jagger, Morrissey and Patti Smith. For 10 years he was the chief photographer at NME. His photos have also been used in documentaries.

Sports Industry

In the sports industry photos are used to capture the sports ‘in the moment’. At the Olympics London 2012 many photos were taken to capture the athletes movements and crowds reactions. These pictures will help people in the future remember the London Olympics. In a practical sense athletes can look back on their performance and see how they can improve. Other photograph would be taken by the paparazzi.

Bill Frakes is a sports photographer that worked on Sports Illustrated in 1983. He has also worked in 125 countries. His photos have been used in campaigns by Apple, CocaCola and Kodak. He is also well known for his online photo journalism website.

Neil Leifer is an American photographer who was born in 1942. Neil also worked for Sports Illustrated but in 1966. He captured many memorable events in sports such as fights featuring Muhammad Ali.

Photo journalism

Photo Journalism is where a journalist takes photos to either document an event or use that photo in their; newspaper, magazine etc. Taking photos for magazines, books and newspapers make it easier for readers to visualise the narrative.

Romano Cagnoni was a photographer born in Pietrasanta, Italy (1935). His professional career was based in London for the majority of his life. He was the first western non- communist photo journalist to be allowed in North Vietnam during the civil war. Throughout his career he has had 43 solo exhibitions and 43 group exhibitions. His photos often showed off the how dark the world can get; Often showing the results of war or poor living.

Fine Art Photography

There are many different versions of Fine Art Photography such as photos used to inspire artists when painting to photos that are taken to put on walls like wall paintings. Fine Art Photography can also be where an artist takes a photo to express emotion much like when the are painting or drawing. An artist may recreate a photo by painting or drawing that shot.

Scott Mead is a photographer from America. He studied at various colleges and universities, studying law. This lead to him becoming a banker. In his spare time he took fine art photos which later in life became his career. He is also very fond on donating his work to charities and hospices.
