Taroona Views Issue 10: 31 October 2016
Mrs Renshaw
It has been a very sad time at Taroona High while we mourn the death of Mrs Sandra
Renshaw. I want to thank all those parents and students (past and present) who offered
their condolences. Mrs Renshaw was a truly dedicated teacher and a remarkable person. She
will be so missed by our community.
On Thursday 27 October our SRC held a very special whole school assembly to honour and
celebrate the life of Mrs Renshaw. Hannah Parish and Rose Laing (both in year 10) spoke
beautifully on behalf of the students as did Ms Kaye McKeown, Miss Bree Everett and Mr
Robert Gawlik as fellow staff members. The students are to be congratulated on their
deeply respectful behaviour and support of each other during this very difficult time.
New Staff
We welcome Ms Chelsea Mouritz and Mr Louis Elson to our teaching team. Ms Mouritz has
been employed to take Mrs Renshaw’s classes and Mr Elson is taking Mr Vanderplas’ classes
for the remainder of the year. We are confident they will do their best to assist students in
reaching their potential.
National History Challenge
We are proud to announce that two Taroona High Students are winners in this very
prestigious competition.
State Winner – Zhana Stojcevski is the State Winner of the Year 8 Level.
National Winner - Beatrice Thurston-Reagan has been awarded the National Winner in the
category of “Using Archival Material”. Beatrice will be flown to Canberra to accept her
award. Congratulations Zhana and Beatrice.
Grade 6 – 7 Transition Days
Whilst our students are at the athletics carnival this week, we will host the Grade 6
students from our Home Area primary schools. The students will experience a school tour,
Music, Art, Drama, Science and Mathematics. Thank you to Mrs Andrews for her
organisation and the participating teachers for planning and taking the year 6 classes.
60th Anniversary Visit
We recently had the pleasure of hosting THS graduates from 1966 who revisited Taroona
High School for a guided tour and afternoon tea on Friday.
NAPLAN Results
On Nov 1st, the students who achieved results that placed them in the top 1% in the 2016
NAPLAN tests will be recognised at a ceremony at New Town High School. Our
community is very proud of the students who will be recognised for this significant
achievement. We congratulate the following: Year 7: Evie Shipway (top in School and top
1%), Magdalena Chappel, Kate Poynter, Holly Mayo, Amy Gooley, Ruby Landon, Ines Ait
Maamar and Jim Howard Year 9: Layne Kullrich, Katy Fraser, Alex Battaglia, Lilith Cole,
Sarah Rayner, Aaditya Arya, Tahlia Hawkes, Ulrike Loofs-Samorzewski, Joseph Mulcahy and
Ashley Watson.

Education Bill 2016
The Education Bill 2016 was tabled in Parliament on 21 September
2016. This is an important piece of legislation, as it will determine
the framework for the way in which education is provided into the
future.
A series of Fact Sheets on key areas has been released to assist
parents and the wider community in understanding what has
changed and why. A list of fact sheets is provided below and they
are available to view from http://tased-education-
act.blogspot.com.au/.

Providing Access to Early Years Education
Early Childhood Education and Care
Changes to the Requirement to Complete Education and

Further information will be provided once the Bill has passed the
Parliament and the final framework is known.
Hobart College Enrolment Day 2017
On Monday 14 November, Taroona High School Grade 10
students will attend Hobart College (Mt Nelson) to finalise their
enrolments for 2017.
Students should make their own way to and from the college. Bus
timetables are available on the Metro website
www.metrotas.com.au. Once students have completed the
enrolment process they are not required to return to school. All
Year 10 students, regardless of their 2017 intended
destinations, will not be required at Taroona High School
on this day.
Students should arrive at Hobart College between 9.30am and
12pm and report to the main office block. The college has
requested that students stagger their arrival times for enrolment:
as follows:
9.30am - surnames A-G
10.30am - surnames H-O
11.30am - surnames P-Z
If these times do not suit, by all means arrive when you can during
the morning.
Students may wear free dress and ID pictures will be taken.
If you have any further queries please feel free to contact Kim
White or Julianne Blackaby on 6227 7700.
Grade 6 Taster Days
Students transitioning from Grade 6 to Taroona High School will
attend taster days on Tuesday 1 or Wednesday 2 November.
Student Orientation Visit
Monday 12 December 2015—9.30am – 1.30pm
The aim of the day is:
For children to have the opportunity to meet their
classmates, peer support leaders and possibly some of
their teachers for 2017.
For parents to share information that will assist students
in their transition from primary to secondary school, and
to answer any key questions that parents may have. The morning will be devoted to introductions to key people,
including student peer leaders, familiarisation with school routines,
entertainment by Taroona High School bands and a tour of the
school campus.
2016 Levy Payments are Now OVERDUE
Non-payment of levies has a serious impact on the
provision of materials and activities for students at the
school, putting a huge strain on the school budget and impacting
on all areas of the school’s operations.
We encourage you to contact Belinda Johnson, School Business
Manager, on 6227 7700 to discuss arrangements for payment of 2016 overdue levies.
If you have lost your invoice, please email
[email protected] or phone 6227 7700 and we will
provide a reprinted invoice for you.
All outstanding levy payments which were overdue at the end of
2015 will be transferred to the Department of Education for
follow-up. This may mean that debts are referred to the Tasmanian Collection Agency.
Should you be experiencing financial difficulty, we would
be pleased to assist you to make some suitable
arrangements to pay off the debt.
Payments can be made in the following ways:
• In person to the school office.
• BPAY - On the bottom of your statement is a BPAY code and
reference number for payments through your bank or financial institution. (Please note that the BPAY code and
reference number for payments through your bank or financial
institution is unique to each individual invoice. It is
necessary to enter the exact reference number as indicated on
the invoice when making a BPAY payment. Failing to change the
reference number means that payments may be made to the
wrong school, especially if a student has changed schools.)
• BPOINT
• Credit card payments over the phone to the school office.
• Mail - Remove payment slip from invoice and mail it with cheque or money order (made payable to Department of
Education) to:
TAROONA HIGH Meath Avenue TAROONA TAS 7053
2017 Levies
There will be a small increase in school levies for 2017:
Grades 7 & 8 $635.00
Grades 9 & 10 $700.00
Invoices for Levies will be posted home in January. Parents and
carers are advised that payment is due prior to the
commencement of the school year, unless you have made
arrangements to pay levies by instalment on the agreement form
that will soon be posted home with permission forms for 2017.
Musical Instrument Levy
All outstanding Musical Instrument Levies for 2016 are now
overdue. Please pay now, as a matter of urgency.

Art Materials Donation
Recently, Taroona High School has been extremely
fortunate in receiving a very generous and
substantial donation of art materials and books
from the estate of renowned Tasmanian artist and
teacher, Susan Urbanc.
It is a considerable and valuable contribution from
her daughter, Lisa Urbanc, and the extended family. The Art
Department is very appreciative of this gesture and will ensure the
resources are enjoyed and well utilised by the students in honour
of Susan’s love of creativity, education and kindness.
With reverence and thanks from all our school community.
Karena Gregory (Acting Principal), Julie le Brun, Nicky Hortle,
Jenny Morgans, John Hutchison & Javier Duharte (Art Teachers)
Trail of the Tin Dragon Excursion
A group of Grade 7J students and Jonty Hilton (8B) enjoyed a
school excursion on the Trail of the Tin Dragon from 20 - 23
October. They visited museums in the North and North East area
before camping at the Freycinet Peninsula.
PLEASE DO NOT PARK OVER
RESIDENTS’ DRIVEWAYS
We had a visit from Tasmania Police this week.
Police have asked our school community to
observe “No Standing” signs, when parking in
surrounding streets to the school. In particular
DO NOT PARK over residents’ driveways. Police
will be increasing their presence in the area.
Thank you for your co-operation.

New Caledonia Trip Report
Sixteen of our Grade 8, 9 and 10 students went to New Caledonia for 8 days with Tim Muir and Jillian
Lynch. We had an amazing time in Nouméa, the ‘Paris of the Pacific’ and its surrounds. Highlights of the
trip were snorkelling at Île aux Canards, a ride on the Tchou-tchou train around Nouméa, shopping at the
Carrefour, and a day at Phare Amédée, where we could explore the island and the lighthouse, go
snorkelling and enjoy a Polynesian feast and dance show. We also visited the Tjibaou Cultural Centre and
learnt a lot about the cultures of the Pacific region, especially the Kanak culture.
Students were immersed in the French language through lessons with Franck at the hotel and visiting the
Collège Francis Carco in Dumbéa, a town close to Nouméa, like Kingston is to Hobart. We all had first-
hand experience of a typical school day in New Caledonia, which is modelled directly on the French school
system. Lessons started early, at 7.30am, and finished around 4.30pm. We dined at the cantine, which was
a sit-down affair at tables. Students experienced a range of lessons, such as Science, French, English,
Spanish, Maths, Philosophy, History and Geography. No-one wears uniforms, and students could check out
of school if they didn’t have a lesson timetabled. Morning and afternoon recess breaks occurred, as well as
a 90 minute lunch break.
Our students experienced the real New Caledonia, living with host families
for four nights. They soon negotiated language barriers and were quickly
able to form friendships with the host students. Saturday was New
Caledonia’s national holiday, where students spent the day with families
participating in activities such as visiting the aquarium or the parc forestier. It
was great to spend the last night dining out at a crêperie with the host
students to finish our stay.
Taroona High School will have the privilege this week of hosting a group of
students from the Collège. We also enjoyed the trip so much that we will
be offering a similar trip in two years’ time. Expressions of interest will go
out next year.
