Letter from the TWR President Continued We see an increase in surrender requests, shelter activities and emergency dog abandonment calls, especially for seniors and dogs with health needs. The warm moist NC summer generates a risk of heartworm infestation, which is especially prevalent in rescues. While treatment is available, it is quite expensive and delays a dog's placement with a new home. Please encourage all you know to open their hearts, homes and wallets to a weim in need this year. Perhaps consider sponsorship of a heartworm positive dog as a gift for someone special on your Holiday shopping list this year.

Rescue Report: During the months of October and November, Rescue took in 15 new dogs, adopted 12 and has another 13 pending at this time. As usual, the “holiday dump” has begun and we often see additional surrenders by folks who want to spend the holidays without their dogs to care for and board. Sad but true….

Thanks so much for the recent donations from TWC club members, we are humbled by your generosity Stacy and Eric Lebow and the TWC attendees who “bought brags” from the November meeting. Thank you to Jack Sappenfield for donating his fee from a tracking seminar he conducted for the Mt. Nittany Dog Training Club. We are blessed to have such wonderful support from so many folks! We’d like to share a lovely tribute to long time TWC member and rescue worker, Barbara Doermann, which was sent to us by Willow’s owners: Mrs. Doermann arranged my adoption of Willow, an adult mixed breed Weimaraner then called Sparky, in 2003. TWR was kind enough to rescue Willow from a Cumberland County shelter even though she was a mixed breed. Her first foster gave up on her because the dog dug holes in the yard. Mrs. Doermann took Willow in and gave her the attention and love she needed. Even though Mrs. Doermann had fostered Willow for only 2-3 weeks before I adopted her, she cried when my husband and I loaded Willow into my SUV. Her compassion is unbelievable. I hugged her and promised her I would take the very best care of Willow. Willow was estimated to be about 2.5 years old when we got her. She was beautiful inside and out. We did a DNA test on her and, in fact, she was mostly Weimaraner with some Doberman mixed in. When we walked her, people in cars would stop and ask what kind of dog she was. When Willow was 9, she began having some health issues. We provided the best vet care possible and continued to take the walks she loved so much, however it was necessary to let her go a couple of years later at the age of 11. I cannot appropriately describe what a wonderful dog Willow was. I want to express my appreciation to TWR for taking a mixed breed in and to Mrs. Doermann for having faith in me to take care of that precious dog she became attached to in a few weeks’ time. This is why we put our hearts on the line every day in Rescue!! Thank you, Barbara!

If you have not recently volunteered, please consider volunteering for at least one event in 2015. We have some activities that make money and others that encourage the natural talents of our dogs. If we continue to not be able to staff our activities according to WCA and AKC guidelines, we may have to make a choice and eliminate those that are not well supported. We have a good membership base and I do hope you will try and attend as many meetings and activities as you can, because when we have club business to discuss and vote on, we at times do not have a quorum. It is necessary that we have club business cared for or the postponement will only delay what should be a simple process. You can come to restaurant meetings without buying dinner if you wish. We are going into a new year soon and hopefully we can find the inspiration to fully enjoy our dogs and protect and nurture our breed. Thanks for your support, hug your gray babies every day, and hope to see you soon. Respectfully submitted,

There are no words to explain what a special guy Oscar was. I knew this time would come, but it’s still never easy.

So many “firsts” with Oscar. He taught me so much! His natural field ability, trainability, and great temperament showed me what to strive for in a breeding program. He has set the bar high.

We are so thankful for his kids, some still living, some not... Roxy and Nick Tony, Grace, Micah, Stewie and Zoee

And for his grandchildren and great grandchildren We are especially thankful to have the following grandchildren living with us…

GCh QuikSilvr Gotta Be Special, JH NSD NRD V - Kaylee GCh QuikSilvr Gotta Be The One, JH NSD NRD V - Chloee Ch QuikSilvr Gotta Shine On, JH NSD NRD V - Aimee Ch QuikSilvr Just Dare Me, JH NSD NRD V - Flick

His offspring include multiple Champions and Grand Champions, Master Senior and Junior Hunters, dogs with Field Trial placements and points, Retrieving ratings (RDX, RD, NRD), and Obedience, Agility and Tracking titles.

We miss you, but we know that your body was tired and that you are now in a better place. Fly free my sweet, wonderful Oscar. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The meeting was called to order after dinner at 7:33 pm by President Jack Sappenfield. Attending were members Rusty Jenrette, Skip and Kathy Page, Charles and Carol Parron, Helen Sanderford, Lucy and Jack Sappenfield and Rick Yates. Guests were Jen and Ryan Wale. Without objection the minutes of the meeting of August 30, 2014, were approved as published in the September 2014 newsletter. The PRESIDENT reported that the next meeting would be Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Backyard Bistro in Raleigh. He encouraged the members to participate in club events as exhibitors and as volunteers. SECRETARY Rusty Jenrette said that she was emailing to the TWC list all correspondence of general interest . TREASURER Helen Sanderford reported that the club’s current balance is $19,053.86. SHOW COMMITTEE member Rusty Jenrette reported that Show Chair Stacy Libow said that preparation for the TWC Specialty Show to be held on March 21, 2015 was proceeding as planned. RATINGS COMMITTEE CHAIR Helen Sanderford said that shooting ratings would be held this coming Sunday, November 16, 2014, practice Saturday November 15, at the Adams’. The next ratings (shooting) will be on January 30, 2015, with the hunt test. AGILITY COMMITTEE CHAIR Jack Sappenfield said that Agility Trials would be held in Sanford, NC again, on July 17-19, 2015. TWC needs at least five club members to be present at all times during the event to meet AKC requirements, which is true for all TWC AKC events. TRACKING COMMITTEE MEMBER Jack Sappenfield reported for chair Cindi Caravati that a tracking test will be held on Jan. 18, 2015 on the fields outside of Snow Hill, VA. An AKC representative will definitely be present as one of the judges will be evaluated. Again, five members of the club must be present at all times. Volunteers are needed for track laying and other duties. HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE CHAIR Lucy Sappenfield said that she will send an email to the mailing list with the menu for dinner for the January meeting so people attending can order at the club price. She also said people can come to the meeting without ordering dinner. TWC will be unable to have the March (show) meeting at the Backyard Bistro because of a conflict with a hockey game. Lucy thanked the Libows for offering the use of their home for the meeting. Transportation to their home for dinner after the show will be offered to our show exhibitors. No alcoholic beverages can be served because the meeting will be official and there would be liability to the club and to the home owners. The Committee will decide the menu. NOMINATING COMMITTEE MEMBER Rick Yates presented the report which had been given to the membership by email. All officers and directors for this year were nominated except Steve Briggs was nominated to the Board after Christine Flock’s resignation for personal reasons. The President called for any additional nominations from the floor. There were none.

THINGS THAT YOU WILL NEED

1. 10 -12 boxes all different sizes (as you progress you can you use any type of container, even

a ballpoint pen or old remote)

2. A very stinky treat (we use salmon and we only use this for nose works)

3. A room (if the room is a big room, keep the search area small)

4. A 6-10 ft. leash (you can start with a six foot if you want)

5. Old frozen dinner trays (optional, helps keep the food crumbs contained inside the food box)

6. An extra person to help with the hides or a crate to put your dog in while you place the hides

TO START THE GAME 1. Please make sure your food ”hide” box is marked so you don’t contaminate the other boxes.

2. In your room place boxes and “hide” box in a straight line, with your “hide” (food box) loaded

and in place

3. Bring in dog. Limit the use of obedience commands; it is important that the dog learns his

independence in this game. Some dogs are reluctant to venture out at first, so you might have

to walk them on a leash alongside the boxes until they find the “hide” (food box). Once they

find the “hide” it is a party time and showers them in treats and praise!!! Always treat at the

”hide”. After the Dog understands to look for a “hide” you can do this off leash if you choose.

PS if your dog still won’t engage with the boxes, go over to the boxes and act like there is

something very interesting there (try not to hover over the “hide” box) and try not to point

where the “hide” is located.

4. After the dog has found the “hide” and you partied, remove the dog from the area and re-hide

the food box. As you progress and the dog understands the game a little better … spread the

boxes out and you can also introduce other types of containers (like shoes and flower pots

and other things).

5. Remember to keep is sessions short and fun. This will mentally wear them out.

HANDLER GOALS

1. To let your dog figure it out. Some dogs will get frustrated and look to you to help them.

Sometimes I have to turn my back to my dog so he knows I will not help him and he goes

back searching or sometimes I just say find it.

2. To start learning your dog and read their signal of a “hide”. Some people even video tape

their dog to help them identity Most mistakes that a handler will make is not trusting a dogs

nose. In a trial a “hide” was in a ball point pen lying on the ground. The dogs indicated, but

the handler didn’t think a “hide” would be in a ball point pen, and they failed.

3. To have fun with this.

4. Anytime your dog’s seems frustrated go back a step to get the dog engaged again.

After your dog gets comfortable searching in a room, repeat the same steps but move the containers outside.

For beginning car searches start low and easy until they figure out the game. After your dog has a good grasp of the game you can start pairing your food with the scent and repeat the same steps.

ODORS

Birch (aka "Sweet Birch" or Betula Lenta) Anise (aka "Aniseseed" or Pimpinella Anisum) Clove (aka "Clove Bud" or Syzgium Aromaticum or Eugenia Caryophylatta)

If you have a reactive dog they can participate, but there are rules to follow and limitations.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ARE READY TO EARN YOUR TITLE The information below came from the k-9 noseworks website http://www.nacsw.net ODOR RECOGNITION TEST Trial entry requires that handler/dog teams must have passed the appropriate Odor Recognition Test (ORT) in advance of the trial. The purpose of the ORT is to verify that the dogs know the target odor (scent) used in competition. Successful passage of an ORT requires a dog to identify the location of the target odor and the handler to correctly call an ‘alert’ (or equivalent) within a three-minute time period. The Odor Recognition Test must be judged by an NACSW sanctioned certifying official, who could be an approved K9 detection handler, a CNWI and/or other qualified person at the discretion of the NACSW. A Certified Nose Work Instructor (CNWI) may judge an ORT as long as it is not for current students. For information on upcoming ORTs near you, use the calendar below. To enter an ORT, follow the instructions for that event. For more information on ORT rules, see the trial rule book. TITLES The NW1 team should demonstrate the following:

1. The dog will seek out the exact source of the odor.

2. The handler can identify the dog’s communication of the exact source.

3. The dog can maintain the energy, stamina and mental focus to do all four elements in one

day.

4. The dog wants to find odor regardless of the environment around him

The NW2 teams should demonstrate the following:

1. The dog can find multiple hides in one environment.

2. The dog and handler team can work through more challenging, less accessible hides.

3. The dog can overcome food and toy distractions and alert only to odor.

4. The dog can manage a longer, larger search.

The NW3 team should demonstrate the following:

1. The dog can find an unknown number of hides in a search environment.

2. The handler will recognize the search behavior in a dog when no odor is present (if there is a

blank room).

3. The dog and handler team can work through even more challenging, less accessible hides

with varying heights and containment.

4. The dog can overcome food and toy distractions in any environment and alert only to odor.

5. The dog can manage much longer, larger searches, with the interior searches potentially

being 12-15 minutes.
