GENRE IDEAS

For our genre we came up with two different ideas – drama or horror, with these two genre’s we planned and brainstormed what each genre includes. For example in horror films we would frequently see abandoned locations, a lot of tense scenes and goriness and dark settings. For drama we would associate it with cliff hangers, predictability and a lot of emotions.

Horror: The ideas for our film

- A haunted school

- A serial killer

- A girl captured in school and killed.

Drama:

- Cyber bullying

- Relationship conflict

- Family problems

AUDIENCES FOR HORROR FILMS

Usually we find that the majority of audiences for horror films are teens and younger adults. This is because teenagers and younger adults find the whole genre to be very thrilling and enticing, which makes them watch it as it gives them some sort of adrenaline that excites them and makes them absorbed within the film. It is due to the anticipating scenes which are made to be very tense and horrific meaning that it attracts the younger adults from the settings and characters (for example a serial killer that murders teenagers in brutal ways). Some films that are from the horror genre and have been very successful are The Exorcist (1973) a supernatural horror film was ranked 8/10 on IMDb and 87% positive review on Rotten Tomatoes. The films had an age rating of 18 meaning that it included a lot of violence, sexual references, gore and disturbing scenes. Another film that recently came out was Insidious Chapter 3 (2015) it got a rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb and 59% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The age rating is a 15 which involves violence, strong language and frightening images. Most of the horror films focus their audiences around younger adults, however I think that we should try and challenge this and try to aim our horror film at the more elderly so they can get more involved in this industry of horror films by making them more intellectual and realistic for them.

AUDIENCES FOR DRAMA FILMS

A vast amount of drama is aimed at adults. This is because drama exhibits real life situations with realistic characters, settings and stories. It shows the journey of characters and how they develop throughout the film, it shows intense social interaction and the purpose of a dramatic story line is to move the audience emotionally which is mostly associated with adults that understand the real life situations more than teenagers and find it much more interesting to watch because of the emotional attachment that comes with it. There are also conflicts that include inner/outer realistic struggles depicting hardships, difficulty, and pain, which allows the audience to relate with the characters and shows empathy. Structured with climaxes and anti climaxes to keep the audience emotionally attached and the tension ongoing. A form of realisation at the end/happily ending. Some drama genre films include Titanic (1997) action-packed romance. It was rated 7.7/10 on IMDb. It has an ageing rating of 12A because it includes some adult scenes, strong language with a little violence. Another film Fifty Shades of Grey (2015) was rated 4.2/10 on IMDb and 25% positive feedback on Rotten Tomatoes. The age rating for this film was an 18 because of nudity, disturbing adult scenes and strong language. Most of the drama genre is aimed at adults and not directed as much at younger adults and teens, so I think that creating a drama film for a mainstream teen society would be good for the drama industry to get a wider variety of audiences.
