It’s on again! The Annual Flinton Races, to be held Easter Saturday, 19 April, 2014, has grown from strength to strength each year. This year’s race meeting will be no different with a full five race program and $42,000 in prize money up for grabs. The usual bookies’ ring will be in operation where happy punters can bet on the local and interstate races while following the action on the big screens.

Gates open at 11.30am and the day kicks off at noon with a complimentary finger food luncheon courtesy of the Committee. The St George Lions Club will be out in force providing bar and BBQ all day. The Lions Club will also be on deck Sunday morning to provide breakfast for those camping. Please remember to bring your cash as there are no Eftpos facilities available on the banks of the Moonie River!

Guests are able to book a table under the shade of the bough shed; $25 secures you and your guests a table for eight and a bottle of champagne. Please email Cindy Coggan to book - [email protected]. Families are well catered for and the kids will be entertained all day on the free jumping castle. The evening kicks off with an amazing fireworks display and then rolls into the night with a live band and DJ.

The Flinton Race Club Committee has been hard at work all year on a new shower and toilet block. Free camping is available next to the race course.

Ladies and gents, make sure you dress to impress as Fashions on the Field will once again take place. Last year’s entries saw a bevy of gorgeous fillies and many handsome lads battle it out for top fashion honours.

For those who are fleet of foot and fit, be ready to contest the Flinton Dash Footrace to be held on the track following the last race. There is $1,000 cash up for grabs and the glory of being written into the Flinton History Books.

To get to Flinton, simply head west on the Moonie Highway; the Flinton turn off is 12km past Westmar on the right hand side. From St George, the turn off is 110km on the left.

Upcoming Events

Activities by Tara Futures GroupTara Futures Group Committee has a few new faces this year and is hoping to attract more people to be a part of the Group.

The Committee held a workshop with SVA Consulting on the 24th January to look at the results of the survey sent out in December and to see what we need to do to improve Tara.

The first priority seems to be that we need to change the image of Tara, as at present, Tara is portrayed as a less than desirable place to live and to work. By working together, we will try to change the way Tara is perceived and to promote our town as a good, country environment to bring kids up in and to attract people to invest and settle here in housing and businesses. We need more positive publicity and a general sense of local community as well as better infrastructure in our town.

Tara Futures Group holds its meetings ever second Thursday of the month, with the next meeting being held on 13th March. The meetings are held at the Tara Council meeting room at 6pm.

We have a Facebook page under Tara Futures Group if anyone is interested in adding any achievements they may have about themselves from Tara or from the rest of the District.

The Email address is: [email protected] and the web site is www.taradistrict.com.au.

We would like to include your event on the web site; so if you have an event coming up in the district, you can email your details to us and it will be put on the site.

There will be a ‘shop locally’ campaign run in Tara by Tara Businesses starting on Friday, the 7th March with 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes being draw on the Thursday before Easter. The forms for this can be obtained from Tara Hardware and Tara Rural Supplies.

Teelba Phantom Race DayOnce again, the Teelba P&C Association is excited to announce that their biennial Teelba Phantom Race Day will be held on the 22nd March, 2014, commencing at 2:00pm. The objective of the fundraiser is to use all funds raised towards curriculum enrichment, including new technologies in the classroom for all 23 students of the school.

It is a great, family fun day out at ‘The Races’. These races are somewhat unique as there will be no horses on site, but there will be horses running on the big screen and betting with ‘funny money’ available.

On arrival, you can purchase a ‘Funny Money Starter Pack’ which you can use to bet on any or all of the eight pre-recorded races shown on a big screen (similar to the TAB, but using ‘play money’ instead of the real thing). Bets can be placed with one of five sets of ‘questionable’ bookies. And if you are running low on ‘funny money,’ you can purchase additional betting money at minimal cost. At the conclusion of the races, an auction will be held. Smaller auction items, donated by our very special sponsors, can be purchased at auction using winnings and left over ‘funny money’ from the races.

Due to the generosity of the Maranoa Regional Council, our event is able to offer FREE ENTRY and FREE CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES, including jumping castle and merry-go-round. St George Mobile Kindergarten will also be in attendance with a number of activities and toys to keep the kids entertained.

For more information, please contact Bindy Lasker 4669 5262 or Brenda McMillan 4669 5198.

TCDDG Seeks Administrative Support WorkerDo you want to have a family Holiday this year or maybe have some extra Spending Money than this could be for you!

Tara Combined Districts Development Group (TCDDG) are looking for a part time administration support worker. Our organisation started over five years ago and was born out of the amalgamation of Tara Shire council into the Western Downs Regional Council. We wanted the communities of the old Tara Shire to still have a united voice to council and other forms of government. Our organisations is made of representatives of the communities of Tara, Moonie, Westmar, Flinton, Inglestone, Glenmorgan, Meandarra, Hannaford and The Gums.

We meet every three months and each community discusses ideas and issues facing their individual communities. We brainstorm ideas on ways to fix these issues; from funding options to help with events and other

community activities. One of our achievements was helping with funds to establish the Tara and District Magazine. We are looking for a part time paid person for 2 days a month to help with the running of our organisation. The hours are flexible meaning you could can split the time up to suit you ie 4 x half days as long as you do two days per month. Some of the tasks would include promoting events for our communities in the magazine and other newspapers and assist with ideas of funding opportunities available. The flexible hours mean it would ideally suit a wide range of people from the semi retired to mothers with children at school. For more information contact President – David Gunther 07 4665 3366 or [email protected].

Ambulance Open Day – Centenary of Service Dalby Community The Queensland Ambulance Service Dalby has proudly serviced the town’s community and surrounding rural areas for one hundred years.

Dalby’s Local Ambulance Committee chose to celebrate their special occasion on Saturday, 25th January, 2014 between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at the Dalby Ambulance Station, 154/156 Cunningham Street, Dalby.

The Committee invited Acting Assistant Commissioner, Mr Glen Maule, to open the event, and Mayor Mr Ray Brown to be guest speaker on the day. The Local Ambulance Committee and staff were

on hand to welcome all who attended and to answer any questions.

Mr Chris Hanna from Queensland Wildlife Conservation Service undertook wildlife safety talks. I was looking for Snake Safety Awareness information and appropriate actions to be considered by members of the community when they are confronted.

Chris used a PowerPoint display and spoke to open groups, with active interactions with the community members on the day. Chris also included colouring in options for the children. We were able to display many different types of old and new equipment (including vehicles/stretchers etc).

We estimated that over 100 persons attended. I thank all who assisted on the day very much; their efforts made the day a success.

In Safe HandsOne of Western Downs’ individuals is set to keep her community safe with her excellence as a Student Paramedic. Chantahl Stedman of The Gums was nominated by Lisa Hurring, Lecturer in Paramedic Science | School of Medical & Applied Sciences, Central Queensland University, for the prestigious KJM Foundation’s Best Scientific Poster grant. The KJ McPherson Education and Research Foundation was formed in 1987 and its’ purpose is to promote the development of the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) staff to enhance their clinical knowledge, research skills and provide exposure to a variety of professional development opportunities that contribute directly to improving patient care. Each year Paramedics Australasia sponsors a grant offered by the KJM Foundation for two awards; Best Scientific Poster and Best Scientific Paper to encourage Paramedic Students to strive for excellence during their course. Nominations are open to Student Paramedic’s from all Queensland Universities which add up to numbers well into the thousands. This year the winner is proudly among our own. Chantahl was awarded the winner of the Best Scientific Poster and was presented with her major award at the Dalby Ambulance Centenary Celebrations on the 25th of January. The presentation was attended by WDRC Mayor Raymond Brown; Glen Maule ASM, Acting

Assistant Commissioner – General Manager; Mick Davis AM, ASM Vice Chairman of KJ McPherson Education and Research Foundation; Derrick Scheuer, Officer In Charge, QAS Dalby; and QAS staff and friends past and present. Chantahl produced a researched scientific poster supporting and outlining the importance of the implementation of Cardiac Auscultation (listening and identifying heart sounds) as a necessary on road skill for Advanced Care Paramedics. In this she explained how it was best to train all paramedics in a cost effective manner across the state and addressed the matter as a whole. The Western Downs can rest safe knowing that the future of pre-hospital and emergency care is in safe hands with the striving excellence of the Student Paramedics that Central Queensland University is producing.

Gardening Tips for MarchAfter the heat and humidity that we have been having, your roses may be starting to look a bit out of shape. It is a good idea to prune any stray branches and fertilise them with sudden impact for roses to keep them going.

Petunias, alyssum and lobelia can be planted now to get a good autumn show. It is also a good time to start preparing garden beds for winter planting, by mixing the soil with a slow release fertiliser and gypsum. Winter flowering plants include pansies, sweet peas, foxgloves and larkspur, just to name a few.

If you have a vegetable garden, then towards the end of March is the ideal time to prepare a section of the garden so it is ready for your winter vegetables, such as cauliflower, broccoli, onions, peas, cabbage etc.

Don’t forget to visit Dalby Landscapes Facebook page or drop in and see our friendly staff at 15 Hospital Road, if you would like any further gardening advice.

RADF Supports Individuals Too!Many of you reading the Western Downs Magazines will have seen many articles and photos of some of the amazing work done by groups across our Shire who have been the recipients of an RADF grant over the years. There have been several patchwork and quilting projects by various local groups, and groups like Myall Park Botanic Gardens, the Bell and District Art Group or the Meandarra ANZAC Memorial Museum have been successful in obtaining grants to support their work.

The Regional Arts Development Fund, or RADF, recognises that regional artists and groups have the extra burden of the old ‘tyranny of distance’ to contend with to develop their skills and to build community cultural capacity and are there to provide great support by assisting with a proportion of the costs of that activity. One of the principals of RADF is ‘supporting professional artists and arts workers living and working regionally, to practise originality and innovation in the development of quality arts activities and initiatives.’ Or, put simply, to help regional artists to get better for their good and the good of their communities.

To illustrate this lesser utilised part of RADF, I would like to tell you of the three projects I’ve been assisted with over the past two decades by RADF. The first was a one week course at a McGregor Summer School many years ago which kick started my career as a semi-professional artist. I have since sold quite a few paintings and taken several commissions now building upon the skills which I learned at that school. The course gave me new skills in managing watercolour painting and also in the use of

charcoal in drawing and composition.

A few years later, I was successful in another RADF grant to assist me to attend a ‘wet in wet’ watercolour school in Canberra for a week, tutored by a highly skilled painter who generously shared her vast knowledge of the ‘wet in wet’ technique. The other people who attend these schools are also interesting people from vastly different backgrounds and it’s probably worthwhile attending just to meet them and to share ideas! We are all individuals who react individually to our life experiences.

The third project which RADF has assisted me in attending was a McGregor Winter School at USQ, Toowoomba last year. Our tutor was professional artist and author, Deb Gilmartin from Toowoomba, who took the class through use of an amazing variety of drawing implements and techniques. Who knew there are so many types of pencils? I did add to my personal stash of these and I am working to explore their different properties and effects. I even have a box of delightfully tinted charcoal pencils that are water soluble! Oh the ideas!… I may need to live to be 110 to try them all out!

To find out if a project you are thinking of is eligible for RADF, please go to http://www.wdrc.qld.gov.au/radf or contact your local

Council office. The very helpful staff can even assist you to get the interesting application form completed correctly. There is so much you, either individually or in a group can do, and with a little extra from a successful RADF grant, the sky’s the limit!

CompetitionsThe PHANTOM of the OPERAFar beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, the Phantom lives his shadowy existence. Shamed by his grotesque physical appearance he lurks in the misty catacombs beneath the Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over its occupants, but the love he holds for his beautiful protégée, innocent soprano Christine is too strong even for her heart to resist.

The 2014 Empire Theatres major production, The Phantom of the Opera, presented by Heritage Bank, is a timeless story of seduction, despair and obsession as The Phantom’s fixation on Christine unleashes a tale of drama, destruction and death.

Don’t miss your chance to enjoy Andrew Lloyd Webber’s international award winning musical, as this unique theatrical experience, featuring the haunting score including Think of Me, Angel of Music, Music of the Night, All I Ask of You, Masquerade and The Phantom of the Opera is brought to life on the Empire Theatre stage from April 3-13.

Scott Bridle

Page 13: Tara & District Magazine - March 2014

March - 2014– 13

They say they breed them tough in the bush but really I think we breed them brilliant…well that’s the case when you mention the name Scott Bridle. Scott is a born and bred Glenmorgan boy raised at Erambie. His appreciation for nature and the bush was implanted into him from day one by his mother and father as they taught him about the magnificence and splendour that the bush had to offer. With his mother as an artist there is no doubt that Scott “grew up immersed in art” and before long his mother gave him another artistic medium to turn his hand at, photography. Leaving home at age 20 set for the stations up north with camera in hand, Scott embarked on a journey of majestic beauty and admiration. He spent 15 years as a stockman snapping away before graduating to the skies as a pilot. This different angle opened the doorway for Scott in to a new world of photographic opportunities. He spent 10 years in the air before returning to the district with ample images that left the masses in awe. Scott delighted in seeing the pleasant expressions as people looked on through his photos which lead him to compiling his recent book “Outback”. From here Scott decided to try his hand at a bit of healthy competition by entering the BHP Billiton Cannington Waltzing Matilda Photographic Competition. He began his success in this area taking out first place in the Colour Print section in 2010 and more recently again in 2013 with his image (pictured) Jordan’s Woolshed Brenda.

Scott continues his passion for photography right here in the Western Downs and is now based in Meandarra with his newly established helicopter business specialising in contract mustering, feral animal control and aerial photography. With his love for the bush, Scott has also developed a special talent for the odd portrait or two. He is currently building his photographic portfolio in order to release another book and plans to do a

few more trips out west before its completion. Scott’s current book “Outback” can be found at all leading book stores or on his website www.scottbridle.com; for bookings and enquiries please contact Scott on 0429 674 114 or Fairway Studios, Goondiwindi. For those that are interested in photography or would even like to just give it a go, Scott will be judging the Photography section at the Tara Show on the 8th March. And just to be sure he never misses an opportunity, Scott “always has his camera with him” no matter where his travels may lead.

Australian Interschool Equestrian ChampionshipsIn 1984, the first ever Interschool Equestrian Competition was held in Brisbane with riders coming from various parts of the state. Now some thirty years on, we continue to have a large network with Regional, State and National events. Over the past six years, the National Championships have been held annually in Melbourne, Sydney and Toowoomba. In 2013, Western Australia held the very first Interschool National Championships away from the eastern sea board in Brigadoon, Perth. In October this year, the Western Downs Region had the following riders compete: Sean Geraghty, Dominic Holtkamp, Hannah Portbury, Elise Crawford, and Emily, Tom, and Sarah Coggan. These riders had to qualify at regional and then state championships before receiving spots in the Queensland team.

300 athletes represented every state in Australia at the Championships which ran from the 2nd to the 5th October. The event was held at the State Equestrian Centre, located in the Swan Valley, some thirty minutes from Perth. The Swan Valley is also home to over one-hundred wineries including Houghtons and Taylors. Rumour has it, many interschool parents did enjoy a session of wine tasting or two. At this time, Western Australia was receiving one of its wettest years on record. The hospitality of this state was second to none and they were certainly out to make an impression.

Of the children who gained selection, some decided to use pool horses, which always adds an element of difficulty and surprise, not knowing your mount. Those who chose to use pool horses have made long lasting friendships with their WA Hosts. Others made the epic journey of 9000km’s to Western Australia and back. The twenty-two horses that made the journey faced a few hurdles with having to cross three state borders and having to dump feed at four different check stations.

However, this journey was full of adventure and exciting tales that included: Sharing a camp site at Eucla with 300 Rebel bikies who were being escorted out of WA by forty undercover police, playing the Nullarbor Links (the world’s longest golf course), seeing the Western Australian native wildflowers, checking out the super pit in Kalgoorlie and whale watching at the Head of the Bight. One family even managed to have a German countess make the trip back with them. Phillip Coggan described the trip “as an adventure of a lifetime and a must do trip for anyone who has not previously crossed the Nullarbor.”

On a whole, the Western Downs Council collected six national titles across the disciplines of Show Jumping, Dressage and Combined Training. An amazing effort from these seven riders given the distance that many of them live from regular coaching! After speaking with Theresa Geraghty who coaches brother, Sean, she said, “The Interschool National Championships have taken us all over Australia, to places that I never thought I would go. I just wish that I had known about it when I was at school”.

The Interschool Competition season runs from July to the following July. This year, the Regional Championships will be held in Dalby on the 10-12th May, and all new competitors would be greatly received.

Hannaford State School NewsHannaford State School is a small rural school situated on the Surat Development Road, between The Gums and Meandarra. This year, we have 13 students enrolled from Prep to Year 7. This one teacher/ Band 5 school is an integral part of the Hannaford community, which consists of a post office, tennis courts and a hall. We have five families who comprise the small P and C Committee, yet they remain very supportive of their school. Our school motto is: Strive to Succeed. We endeavour to achieve this through a rigorous and explicit curriculum with a balanced focus on all required Key Learning Areas and through a comprehensive teacher aide program. The teacher aides spend much of their time working with individual students, whether it be guided reading, spelling work, sight words, reading comprehension or literacy and numeracy rotations.

Last Thursday, the students had a visit from Mrs Margie Bath. Margie entertained the children with stories of her trips around the world on her motorbike, after a serious accident. Her message to the children was ‘think positive and aim high’.

I look forward to teaching at Hannaford again for 2014 and welcome all new staff and students.

A Sensational Start at Tara Shire State CollegeWelcoming 45 new Preparatory Year students to Tara Shire State College has been a pleasure for Principal, Ms Sharon Barker, this year. Two classes of Preppies, boasting a set of twins each, are off to a “flying start”. Ms Barker thanked the Tara community for having every child geared ready to learn, and looked forward to the wonderful year ahead. “Our early years’ preschool program, PIPPAS, has ensured a smooth transition for many

of our Prep Year students and we are pleased to offer a safe, inclusive education in intentionally-inviting classrooms.”

Mr Glen Williams

My name is Mr Williams and I have been teaching Industrial Technology and Design for around ten years. Some of the schools I have previously taught at in Australia include: Charleville State High School (approximately 5 years), Bribie Island State High and my previous school which is now starting its 3rd year- Murrumba State Secondary College. Over the years, my wife and I have also spent close to 2 years teaching in England where I taught Years 7 through to 13. With this experience, I hope to bring new and exciting programs, like robotics and computer aided design for the students to engage in.

Mrs Marion Williams

I have worked for Education Q u e e n s l a n d for over 13 years and I have enjoyed a variety of teaching roles in various schools in Q u e e n s l a n d and overseas (England). I

began my career in Gympie, teaching students with special needs. Then, my husband and I ventured west to Charleville where I taught students with special needs from a range of different year levels from Kindergarten to Year 12. I also became an Advisory Teacher for inclusion for the Charleville district. Once I had children of my own, we moved to Redcliffe (near Brisbane) and I continued to teach children with special needs. My husband and I feel very blessed to be teaching in Tara. The staff, students and parents have welcomed us warmly. I am looking forward to embracing the country lifestyle again, and working together in partnership with parents and students.

Fiona Gunthorpe

As a new teacher to Tara Shire State College, I am very much looking forward to working with the students who participate in Home Economics. I am very passionate about cooking and textiles and am eager to develop student knowledge in these areas. In particular, ensuring my students exit my classroom as informed citizens about Australian food selection models and healthy eating habits as a way of creating healthier Australians. I look forward to also encouraging student creativity within the textile and food areas which contributes to increased student wellbeing. I have made a lot of my own clothing and more recently branched into patchwork and textile arts fields. I am also looking forward to joining the Tara patchwork group and my first workshop in March. Over the next four weeks, in the lead up to Tara Show, my students will be trialling recipes in preparation to submit many entries in the Secondary School Cooking Section of the Show. All the best to my students as they prepare their entries and hopefully, take out many of the prizes! Later in the year, Tara will be host to an arts / textile exhibition and many of my students’ textile pieces will be incorporated into this display. I will advise you of the details closer to the time. I love enjoying week-ends and

holidays with my family in our caravan; the next holiday will be at Bargara at Easter.

Miss Erin Seymour

This year, I am lucky enough to be teaching Geography and/or History to the Year 9, 10, 11 and 12s. As I love sport, I am very happy to be teaching HPE with Years 8 and 9 and Physical Recreation with Years 11 and 12.

Some students may remember me from a Prac I did here in 2010. I am originally from a small country town called Narrandera in New South Wales (please do not hold this against me and yes, I am aware of the State of Origin tally board!). I really enjoyed my time in the Tara community and am happy to be back here. I have moved here from Goondiwindi where I taught for the last two years. My favourite sport is basketball and I am keen to start some sort of basketball competition here at the College. I hope to improve my tennis game this year. I like music, although I am not musically gifted, I admire anyone who is.

Auxiliary Firefghters Needed in MeandarraThe Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) are desperately seeking local residents to become Auxiliary Firefighters in Meandarra. At present, there is only one active member at the Station available for Emergency response.

Through the commitment of local Auxiliary Firefighters, past and present, the QFES has been able to maintain a response capability to local and district residents at all times i.e. 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 52 weeks per year, for many years to the Meandarra community.

The QFES would like to continue this tradition of a local crew being able to respond to local needs. However, maintaining this level of service into the future will not be possible, unless local members are recruited, trained and available to respond.

Though the QFES can respond nearby and distant resources to emergency incidents in your locality, any such response will involve a delayed arrival by the Fire Appliance and crew.

Would you like to become a part time Firefighter in your Community?

The role of a modern day Firie is a very interesting and fulfilling one with a reactive Emergency response aspect supported by the proactive Community Fire Safety programs and activities.

Currently, the QFES has a number of vacancies at the Meandarra Fire Station. We do need to fill these vacancies to ensure an ongoing prompt

and capable response from this Station.

If you are interested, we would like to hear from you very soon.

Please contact Victor Rafton at Meandarra on 0428 986 861, or Dalby Area Office on 4662 5137 for more details.

The Queensland Curtis LNG Project will be the world’s first project to turn natural gas from coal seams into liquefied natural gas, or LNG.

The project, which has been under construction since 2010, will provide cleaner energy for export markets from 2014.

This major integrated project involves:

• expansion of QGC’s natural gas production in the Surat Basin of southern Queensland;

• 5 4 0 km, 1m- diame ter pipeline network from the gas fields to Curtis Island, off Gladstone; and• an LNG plant on Curtis Island.

As construction advances, QGC is commissioning key components of the project.

The QCLNG pipeline team

celebrated ano ther key milestone on 16 December 2013 with first gas piped from the Surat Basin gas fields to the LNG plant at Curtis Island.

Arrival of first gas on to the island enables commissioning to begin on the first of two LNG production units, known as trains, being developed as part of the project.

Construction of the LNG plant and other key facilities is well under way.

QCLNG projects are gathering momentum in the most s ou ther l y o f our thre e development areas, near Dalby, which is critical to production of first LNG. Three of the six field compression stations being constructed in this area are being commissioned.

The projec t remains on schedule for first LNG in 2014.

Community Fund provides another A$550,000 to local projects

QGC has provided a further A$550,000 to 19 community projects through the latest round of its Sustainable Communities Fund. Funding granted in the sixth round includes about A$305,000 to 12 groups in the Western Downs and about A$245,000 to seven groups in Gladstone.

QGC Vice President Sustainability Brett Smith said the donations supported communities across southern Queensland.

“By lending a hand to hard-working community groups, in addition to longer-term projects in health, housing, employment and training, we are helping to mitigate the impact of our Queensland Curtis LNG Project,” Brett said.

T h e Q G C S u s t a i n a b l e Communities Fund has provided A$4.6 million to 145 short-term, one-off projects since it began in 2011.

Gladstone Youth Orchestra musicians, from left, Rowan Ward, Merin Ward, Jett Fallon and Paris Fallon are eagerly awaiting the arrival of new percussion instruments and a purpose-built equipment trailer that will make travel to events easier in the future.

14,500 people on our team QGC’s latest six-monthly report to Queensland’s Coordinator- General on Australian industry participation shows that QGC and its major contractors currently employ 14,500 people.

This means we have hired more than 15 people every day during the past year. QGC’s investment in construction, exploration and operations since January 2010 has now topped A$19.4 billion.

We invested about A$16.3 billion – or 84% – with Australian firms.

About A$13.2 billion, or 68% of

the total, went to Queensland companies.

QGC Managing Director Derek Fisher said more than 118,800 Australian companies had registered interest in doing business with QGC since 2010.

“A snapshot of current contrac ts shows we are investing nearly A$920 million in Gladstone and about A$915 million in the Western Downs region,” Derek said.

The number of training courses for our staff and contractors totalled 36,100, with a focus on safety skills.

Kylie’s Agro RoundupMice are increasing and we have a solution to stop them from damaging your crop!

Identifying Mouse Holes

Walk in a straight line for 100m and count the number of active holes within a 1m width.

If you have 5 holes per 100m, assuming 2 mice per hole, you could have as many as 10 mice per 100m2, equivalent to 1,000 mice per hectare. (1ha = 10,000m2)

Canola Cards

Place 10 x 10cm paper squares that have been soaked overnight in canola oil at 10m intervals across a transect. Peg in paddocks with wire or tent pegs over night and check the next morning.

If an average of 5% or more of the card is eaten (i.e 5 squares on the sheet) significant mouse activity is emerging and baiting may be required.

Canola cards are available from Tara Rural Supplies, please contact us at the shop on 07 4665 3366.

Walking In Your Shoes There’s an old saying "You can't really know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes”. Last month members of the BMO Team hit the road to get a better sense of just what it’s like to be in the shoes of farmers and business owners across our region.

The stories aren’t new to us. Most of the BMO Partners have grown up on farms and even still work on them, we’ve helped in our families’ businesses, we’ve invested and we’ve borrowed. We’ve been young and carefree, we’ve studied, and we’ve travelled. We’ve had health crises. We’ve lost loved ones. We’ve had families. We get what it’s like to try and put a child through school while praying for the rains to come. And we’ve had good times too, like winning a big contract or having a good day on the golf course. BMO has worked with clients across a range of industries for more than 24 years.

Importantly though, even though we’ve had similar experiences to our clients, we know that we will never assume at the outset what it’s like to be them. To do that, we have to walk alongside them and listen. It’s part of our team values at BMO – our value of “understanding” is about respect and good manners, being open and honest, and committed to listening.

It goes right back to ancient Greece. Plato once said: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle”. That is why we’ve launched a new campaign called “We’re with you every step of the way”. It means more than

just walking beside our clients and advising them, it’s about being “with them”; providing a service that’s not dictatorial – but more like a partnership.

During February, we were out on the road travelling to Taroom, Miles, Condamine, Dirranbandi, Moonie and back to Dalby visiting clients and presenting our “The Farmer Wants a Life” seminars. One thing that really struck us was that no matter how bad the conditions were out in these communities, everywhere we went we were taken aback by the positive spirit of our farming communities. In amongst the desperate need for rain, there were signs of progress and excitement. More than 150 guests came along to the sessions to talk with us about succession planning, business structures, tax tips, government incentives, aged care, employing people, communication and about being aware of the signs of and effects of stress.

We know all too well the many challenges all of our local small businesses are facing – not just farmers but service industry, manufacturing, transport and retail. We know that everyone’s wearing a different pair of shoes… Sometimes the path is smooth and sometimes it’s bumpy. Some are skipping through while others are dragging their feet. But no matter where you are at in life, or in business, we’re with you every step of the way.

Closing The Gap In Health Equality

National Closing the Gap Day focuses on making a contribution to a fairer, better Australia- one that says no to health inequality, injustice and discrimination.

Darling Downs South West Queensland (DDSWQ) Medicare Local is committed to supporting the delivery of culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across our communities. DDSWQ Medicare Local staff work closely with medical practices across the Darling Downs and South West to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be connected with the health services they need to stay healthy.

On National Closing the Gap Day, 20 March 2014, DDSWQ Medicare Local is hosting a free event in conjunction with the Tara Medical Centre to help close the gap on life expectancy among local Indigenous community members.

The event will take place at the Tara Medical Centre from 10.30am, and will include free health information, blood pressure and glucose checks, and

a sausage sizzle provided by the Tara Men’s Group.

Those who attend the event will be offered the chance to go in the draw to win a “deadly” jersey.

The day will also include a talk from former rugby league player and State of Origin great, Colin Scott. Colin will speak about practical ways to look after your health and his personal health experiences.

It is hoped that by holding this event Indigenous members of Tara and surrounding communities will have a better understanding of their health and ways to improve it.

Question: Should I be using generic over the counter reading glasses? New research has revealed that over the counter reading glasses with identical magnification in each eye may put old people at risk of a fall, impact on quality of life and even life expectancy.

The main reason for this is that as we get older there is a greater prevalence of anisometropia (difference between the two eyes). This condition is 10 times more likely in people over 75 years old compared to children.

Generic over the counter reading glasses don’t account for these differences. Appropriate correction of both eyes is especially important as we get older and less stable on our feet.

The Need For Sleep….In last month’s magazine edition you may have learnt a thing or two about sugar and hopefully you have started on your journey of change. This month we are going to focus on another topic that can vastly affect your health and that is sleep. Firstly, lets test how well you are sleeping with a simple questionnaire: For more than two weeks have you…

Had trouble getting to sleep?

Been sleeping for fewer hours than usual?

Had poor quality of sleep?

Been tossing and turning at night?

Been waking up regularly during the night?

Been feeling sleepy most of the day?

Well if you answered yes to any of these then you are not alone. About 15% of Australians are estimated to suffer regular sleep difficulties and another 20% claim to suffer occasional problems sleeping. However, having a good night sleep is important for maintaining good health. The body uses sleep to recharge from the day’s activities. In addition to this we need quality sleep which is not necessarily a long sleep. Lack of sleep or quality sleep can lead to irritability, lack of energy, poor concentration, fatigue, dizziness, slow reaction time, aches and

pains, reduced immune function, decreased general well-being, hallucinations and increased risk of mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Some common sleep problems and disorders include insomnia, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy and sleep apnoea.

Some tips to improve your sleep

In the Morning• Get out of bed as soon as you wake. Don’t

go back to sleep.• Get up at the same time each morning.• Go outside into the fresh air.• Do some form of physical activity, like going

for a walk.During the Day• Do not take naps.• If you are worrying about some problems

then make time to address them so that your mind is free of worry and thoughts at night.

• Monitor your sleep hours and awake hours by using a diary.

• Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea or energy drinks and at worst avoid consuming any caffeine after 4pm.

• Exercise

At Night• Try to go to bed at the same

time each night.• Use low light when getting ready for bed;

this signals the brain to wind down.• Try to keep all electrical items out of your

bedroom. Some studies have shown that electricity can interfere with brain activity during sleep.

• If you have trouble getting to sleep then do a low energy and low stimulation activity before going to sleep such as reading or sewing. Avoid mobile phones or TV they cause too much stimulation.

• Also listening to relaxing music can help clear your mind.

• Ensure your bedroom is quiet, comfortable and dark.

Sleep Tight!

Health & Beauty

What is Dehydration? How Does Dehydration Occur? Dehydration is the loss of body fluids e.g. urine, vomit, diarrhoea and sweat. How do we stay hydrated?

• Regular intake of water and electrolytes from foods• Approximately 60% of our body weight is fluid• Our body requires the correct balance of water and electrolytes• Electrolytes are mineral salts which derive from our foods (Sodium,

Potassium and Chloride)• The primary function of sodium and chloride is to retain our fluid and

potassium to assist with our nerve and muscle function• Every day, we lose water and electrolytes from our body (via urine,

sweat, breath, bodily secretions)• When we are well, this process is controlled so the balance is

maintained• When we are not well (vomiting, diarrhoea, heavy sweating, not

eating), this process is not easy to control and a state of dehydration may occur.

Causes of Dehydration:

• Vomiting and diarrhoea (loss of body fluids and reduced intake of food and fluids)

• Vigorous exercise (loss of sweat)• Travelling (travelling diarrhoea/ long haul flights/ climatic changes)• Hot conditions (loss of sweat)• Working in hot conditions (loss of sweat)• Excessive alcohol (diuretic effect)

Other dehydrating conditions caused by lack of food and fluid intake such as:

• Morning sickness• Colds and fever• General ill health• Migraines/headaches

Signs of Dehydration:

• Warning signs of mild to moderate dehydration:• Decreased urine output (or darker in colour than usual)• Lethargy• Headache• Dry mouth• Loss of skin elasticity (white marks will appear if pinched)• Sunken eyes• Rapid body weight loss of 2% to 7%

Dehydration may not always be evident. For these reasons, young children and the elderly are more at risk of involuntary dehydration.

Medical Advice

• Seek medical advice if diarrhoea persists for more than:• 6 hours for infants under 6 months• 12 hours for children under 3 years• 24 hours for children aged between 3 and 6 years• 48 hours for adults and children over 6 years. For all your supplies of electrolyte replacements, come and visit the helpful staff at Dalby & District Friendly Society Dispensary.

Sport

Tara CricketClose results were once again the order of the day as Condamine hosted Tara and Meandarra in a three team challenge.

Batting first, Condamine got off to a bad start against Meandarra’s attack, losing their first 6 wickets for only 53 runs. Sam Taylor did his best to hold the innings together scoring a patient 19. Bluey Smith and Billy Barkle then came to the rescue, smashing 68 and 46 respectively to allow Condamine to reach a very competitive 188 before they were bowled out in the 25th over.

Tara batted second and had a poor start with the in-form Jeff Wade run out in the first over without facing a ball. Matthew Prain and Allan Bougoure then steadied the ship, putting on a 78 run partnership before Bougoure skied a ball to be out for 39. Seph Gleeson then came to the crease and combined with Prain for another solid partnership before Prain retired for 53. Tara looked on track to overhaul Condamine’s target, but several quick wickets late in the innings, including Gleeson for 31, saw Tara fall 2 runs short.

Meandarra had a steady start to their innings, scoring at the required 6.5 an over for the first 10 overs. Keith Logan scored a good 29, and was well supported by Ryan Burrows 34 and Gary Becker 43. Brendan Hatherell once again proved to be the difference, making a well compiled 50 retired after surviving a very close LBW decision early in his knock. In the end, Meandarra surpassed Condamine’s target in the 28th over to take maximum points for the day.

Brendan Hatherell topped off a good game taking 3 for 13 off his 6 overs. Craig Emery, also of Meandarra, picked up the best figures for the day with 4/23. Tim Dwyer was the pick of Condamine’s bowlers taking 1/9 off 4 overs, while Greg Chappell and Seph Gleeson both picked up two wickets each for Tara.

Tara BowlsThanks to those members who helped out with the green refurbishment last Saturday; it is looking heaps better already!

With the main green out of action, 10 intrepid bowlers took on the heat and the imperfections of the second green in Jackpot Joker Bowls. Whilst there were some interesting twists and turns, everyone had a fantastic afternoon and it was great to see Peter Barnes back for the weekend.

Unfortunately for Barnsey, he did end up on the losing team after he and Jim Smith went down 18 - 8 to Matthew Prain and Peter Matthews. The triples match saw Craig Ensbey, Eddie Jones and Charles Barnes have a 15 - 11 win over Denis Sommerfeld, Laurie Boardman and Gordon LeBusque. The joker remained in the pack, so the Jackpot increases to $455 this Saturday.

Championships to be completed by March 2, 2014 - Round 2 “A” Grade

Singles - M. Larsen v Jim Smith, P. Matthews v T. Duffy, C. Ensbey v D. Sommerfeld and M. Prain v John Smith.

Round 1 “B” Grade Singles - (Please note new draw) C. Brauer v D. Collins, C. Baldwyn v P. Porter, J. McDonald v D. Stark and L. Wright v C.Bradley.

Round 1 “A” Pairs - John Smith & M. Merry v J. Wilson & L. Wright, T. Duffy & L. Boardman v C. Ensbey & P. Porter.

Round 1 Triples - L. Boardman, J. Wilson & L. Wright v Jim Smith, C. Ensbey & D. Sommerfeld, P. Porter, T. Duffy & C. Baldwyn v John Smith, M. Prain & P. Matthews.
