As a school this pro- cess is implemented regularly and I would like to congratu- late the staff for their achievements and consistent hard work. We constantly evaluate, self-reflect and every decision made is based around the pupils at Shorne School. This was recognised by Pamela Draycott our SIAMS inspec- tor who reported “the effective partnership between the executive headteacher and head of school, well supported by governors and the Trust leads to accurate self-evaluation and effective action planning to support further develop- ments.” SIAMS SIAMS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools) took place on the 7th February and we received the official report on 26th February. I am pleased to say the grading we received was Good. The inspector assesses against a criteria focusing on our Christian values alongside behaviour and attainment. One of the key areas of strength reported was “considerate relationships and excellent behav- iour.” The full report can be found on the website. Well done to all the staff, governors and especially the children. Parent Workshops Next term two parent workshops will be held. One will be the re-arranged Vision and Values workshop. Date will be advised when I have confirmation next term. The Homework workshop will be held on Tuesday 24th April at 9.00 am.

Head of School Message—Spring Term 2

Dear Parents, It has been a short but eventful half term as ever with the snow, roadworks, parent consultations and many other activi-ties. Class 4 Science Night

On Friday 9th March Class 4 went to the Science Museum in London for a "Science Night". They took part in lots of different activities and experiments, such as investigating the effects of liq-uid nitrogen! They stayed overnight in the Science Museum which was very exciting. They man-aged to get some sleep and in the morning they went to the 3D IMAX theatre to see a short film. Overall the trip was amazing fun and everyone had a great time!

Writing and Baba Yaga Writing has been an area of focus this term and on Monday 19th February the staff attended a devel-opment day led by an Adam Guillian, an author. He worked alongside the staff and trained everyone on the aspects of story telling. These areas included; storytelling into creative writing, need-to-know plot and character function theory, how to deepen our understanding of story, shared writing and story inno-vation. This is when the teachers learnt the story of Baba Yaga. The children responded well to the ap-proach and produced some brilliant writing. Attendance Attendance continues to be a key area of focus and we are striving for all classes to be 97% or above. This is an Ofsted requirement and as a school we are judged against this. This term we have two clas-ses with the best attendance and they are Class 2 and Class 6. Class 2 will be having a non-uniform day on Friday 4th May and Class 6 will have a non-uniform day on Friday 18th May. Below are the attendance figures for each class for this term: Rabbits 96.0% Hedgehogs 97.2% Badgers 97.8% Eagles 94.0% Dolphins 97.0% Pandas 97.1% Tigers 97.8% The overall attendance for the term being 96.7%. Governor/Foss I would like to thank all the governors who regularly attend training and for all their help and support. We are very lucky to have a very effective and proactive governing body and I would also like to wel-come Lucy South who has joined the governing body as Trust governor. Thank you also to all members of FOSS who are constantly working hard behind the scenes to help raise money for the school. Finally I would like to thank you all for your support and wish you all a very happy Easter. Kind regards Tara Hewett Head Of School

World Book Day 2018

Unfortunately due to the weather conditions this term there has only been one netball match against St Botolph’s but unfortunately Shorne lost 4-0. On Saturday 24th March the Easter 7’s football tournament took place at Riverview Park Junior School. The team consisted of boys from Clas-ses 5 & 6. This was a great morning for the team. They played five matches, won four and drew one against Langafael Primary School. They then went head to head with Langafael in the final where the score was 0:0 at the end of the match. However, after extra time the score was still 0:0 which resulted in Shorne becoming joint winners of the tourna-ment with Langafael. Well done to the whole team.

Class R The topic in Rabbit Class this term has been ‘Tell me a story’. The children started the term with the story of Gold-ilocks and the 3 bears. They made por-ridge and tasted it making a graph of whether they preferred it sweet, plain or not at all! They made puppets and masks of charac-ters from the story and learnt to retell the story through a song. They designed and made a chair for baby bear and made wigs so that they could become the characters! The next story was that of Baba Yaga. They all thoroughly enjoyed retelling this Russian traditional story and made a collage story map as a class, painted pic-tures of what they thought Baba Yaga might look like, experimented making witches potions and used their glittery wands to mix them. They designed and made their own Baba Yaga house deco-rating it with a collage of sweets and cakes and became authors making their own Baba Yaga books. The final traditional story was Jack and the Beanstalk. They found some magic beans and planted them hoping to grow their own beanstalks. They created their own number beanstalks, writing and ordering numbers as well as labelling posters, making their own books and learning to measure. They needed to make the giant a pair of glasses and a wig but they had to be the correct size! They also enjoyed making junk model castles for the giant and used their lis-tening skills to follow instructions to paint accurate pictures of the giant.

Cornerstones Curriculum

Each class would like to tell you about this term’s topics and what they have been learning about and also we would like to share with you the new topics for next term.

Class 1 This term in Class 1 the topic was 'The En-chanted Wood-land.' The chil-dren have en-joyed going to weekly forest school sessions where they have explored the ar-ea, met some ani-mals, made mud faces on trees and used differ-ent woodland ma-terials to make a woodland crown. They have also started to grow their own plants including cress, spinach, carrots and courgettes. They have learnt about the differ-ent parts of plants and their purposes and have looked at different wood-land animals and learnt some ex-citing facts about them.

Class 3 Scrumdiddlyumptious has been a delicious topic for Class 3. Despite the snow, they have squeezed in a visit from a Chocolatiere, who helped them to design their own chocolates After reading and watching Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory, they designed an imaginary chocolate factory. To keep it balanced, they have learnt how to read ingredients on their snacks to see how healthy they are. They have been looking at what nutrients animals and humans need and why. They had a lot of fun naming the bones and learning about different kinds of skeletons and put their lessons about muscles and bones into practice on Sport Relief Day.

Class 2 Class 2’s topic this term was ‘Muck, Mess and Mixtures’. The class have been reading Roald Dahl’s ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ and began the term making lots of mess creating their own marvellous mixtures. They looked at the im-portance of labels on medicines and clean-er products they could find at home and created posters showing what these labels meant and where they should be kept. They looked at ‘bossy verbs’ during English lessons and the children used these to write their own recipes. The children also learnt to follow a recipe from Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting recipes’ to make some ‘Hot frogs’ which were served on lily pads (green custard). The children used ‘wow’ adjectives to describe the food they tasted. They learnt lots of dif-ferent skills this term and have begun to silent debate – being able to ex-press their opinions and then discuss them as a class. During book week the children looked at the story of Baba Yaga and wrote their own version of the story which they were able to share with the chil-dren in Class 4.

Class 6 This term Class 6 began their Corner-stones topic “Hola Mexico” with a Mexican themed party which was great fun! As Class 6 have been working hard towards their SATs they will be continuing with this topic next term.

Class 5 As Class 5's topic was Alchemy Is-land this term, we learnt about Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest' because it was set on an island with no name. The class read, listened to and acted out the play before writ-ing a diary entry from someone on the island. They also learnt about

Shakespearean lan-guage and some com-mon phrases which were invented by Shakespeare such as: 'In my heart of hearts' and 'For good-ness' sake'. They also learnt about co-ordinates, testing ma-terials for their prop-

erties, translating and reflecting shapes. This term Class 5 also had the pleasure of learning the Russian story Baba Yaga. They followed a great process for remembering the story which included oral story tell-ing, actions, drawing and imagining the story. Then they created their own stories using the plot of Baba Yaga. Class 5 chose their favourite from the class and so did Miss Flood and Mr Edwards. They all shared their stories in their own classroom and went to Class 1 to share their stories too.

Class 4 This term Class 4 have had an exciting time learn-ing about the human body in their topic "Burps, Bot-toms and Bile". At the beginning of their topic they made models of the "Brain hats". These hats showed them the differ-ent sections of the brain and their jobs. They also found out about teeth and what causes tooth decay. They conducted an experi-ment where they put eggs in different liquids to in-vestigate the effect they have on teeth. The results clearly showed “Don't drink too much coke!” Class 4 have real-ly enjoyed this short topic!

Medical Reminder

Please can we remind you to inform the School of any changes, or addi-tions, to your child's medical needs and that any medication is up to date (with spares available espe-cially for inhalers, etc). Prescribed medication for three doses daily, will not be administered during the school day. Also, any over the counter medications are not permitted in school. At this time of year several children have sore lips and require lip salves. They are permissible provided they are named and only used at break and lunchtime. At other times, they should be in bags/coat pock-ets. Please remind your child not to share them with their friends. Please contact Mrs Peeke if you need to inform the school of any changes, addi-tions etc. Thank you.

Class 1 would like to thank those par-ents who were able to attend the phonics afternoon and workshop on Tuesday 13th March. The class had a fantastic time showing all the differ-

ent activities that they do in school.

Sport Relief 2018

On Friday 23rd March the children took part in Sport Relief. To get into the spirit of the day each class dressed up as a sporting personality from a number of different countries. Some of the outfits were fantastic! Over the course of the day the children took part in some sporting activities and found out about the country they had been given. To start the day the children ran for one mile around the playground and also took part in an inter-house competition, competing against each other in events such as hurdles, javelin and even archery! The winner of this competition was Havisham. Overall a great day was had by everyone and we raised £211.47 for a good cause.

Parking Reminder

Please may we remind parents/carers about consideration when dropping and collecting your children to and from school in the mornings and afternoons:

Mornings: please do not park in Cob Drive as this delays the flow of the drop off system. Afternoons: please do no park on or near junctions, on grass verges or block residents’ driveways.
