A B O U T

Chef Wong Lian You (黄廉祐) joined the InterContinental® Kuala Lumpur as the Executive Chinese Chef in January 2012 to spearhead the conceptualisation of Tao Chinese Cuisine. Since the opening in January 2013, Chef Wong with 17 years of culinary experience does not restrict his cooking to any particular region but defines it by combining old and new cooking traditions backed by invaluable skills. With a principle of cooking with his heart, bringing his food to life using vivid seasonal flavours, Chef Wong states his preference to using ingredients that are rich in colour and aroma.

The executive Chinese chef started his accidental career in the culinary scene at the age of 19. Subsequent to his temporary position as a kitchen helper whilst waiting for high school results, Chef Wong’s initial dream of becoming a technician given his love for motorbikes took a turn, and he has not looked back since.

In his own time, Chef Wong is an active member in several culinary associations and dedicates his time and professional skills into training aspiring chefs as well as chefs representing Malaysia in various Chinese Cuisine culinary competitions around the world.

CustomsWeddings are a time for traditions. In fact, a wedding is itself a tradition. It is an age-old custom of celebrating the union of two individuals in the presence of their family and close friends who are invited to join in the celebrations.

Traditional Chinese wedding customs are considered as the foundation of rites in traditional Chinese culture. A wedding is usually a grand occasion with overly-elaborate formalities. There are eight major procedures of a wedding, including proposal making, birthday matching, marriage divination, betrothal gifts presenting, wedding date fixing, dowry urging, welcoming the bride to the wedding and performing the formal wedding ceremony.

B E T R O T H A L G I F T S

The tradition of gifting the bride’s family with gifts before the wedding represents the formal betrothal in ancient times. Known as “Guo Da Li” (过大礼), the groom’s family offers food items and gifts to the bride’s family. These gifts symbolise prosperity and good luck. Additionally, the bride price (also called the bride wealth) is presented in a red packet.

A common gift item during Guo Da Li are two pairs of candlesticks that come with a dragon motif for the groom and a phoenix motif for the bride. Other small items may be included during the presentation and to cap the tradition, all the gifts are housed in a traditional basket together with two ang pows for the bride price, as well as the diaper money.

After the presents are offered to the bride’s family, some families even consult the horoscopes of the bride and groom just to make sure that the wedding ceremony’s date and hour would not clash with their signs.

T E A C E R E M O N Y

The tea ceremony is a significant event in a traditional Chinese wedding and allows the newlyweds to show respect to their parents. The bride and groom will first return to the groom’s family home to pay their respects to his family by serving them tea and addressing them by their formal titles. The newlywed couple will kneel in front of both sets of parents and serve tea to them, as well as their older relatives. In return, both families family will acknowledge his and her place in each other’s family and offer them blessings for their happy union.

H A I R C O M B I N G R I T U A L

The hair combing ritual symbolises the bride and groom’s transitions from girl and boy to woman and man. The ritual usually takes place the night before the wedding at the bride and groom’s respective houses. Both the bride and groom are required to wash themselves with water infused with pomelo leaves, which is believe to ward off evil, dressed in a brand new set of pyjamas, and be seated in front of a pair of dragon and phoenix candles. The bride and groom will each have their hair combed four times whilst the bride’s mother iterates the blessing each stroke represents:

一梳梳到尾,

二梳百年好合,

三梳子孙满堂,

四梳白发齐眉。

May your marriage last a lifetime

May you be blessed with a happy and harmonious marriage until old age

May you be blessed with an abundance of children and grandchildren

May you be blessed with longevity

To complete the ritual, both the bride and groom have to eat glutinous rice balls as a symbol of a sweet marriage and togetherness through thick and thin.
