Tanzanian Animals

Animal Species

Tanzania is known for its predators like Lions, Cheetahs,

Leopards, Hyenas, Wild dogs, and Bands of Chimpanzees.

Tanzania has over 60,000 insect species, 25 types of reptiles or

amphibians, 100 types of snakes, and numerous species of fish.

Tanzania also has over 1,000 species of birds like Kingfisher,

Hornbill, Bee-Eaters, Fish Eagles, and Flamingos. Tanzania’s

fauna (all of the animal life in a particular region) is notable

both for sheer numbers and variety, with representatives of

430 species and subspecies among the countries more than

4,000,000 wild animals.

Facts about Animals in Tanzania

The black rhino is one of the most endangered animals in

Tanzania. Poaching has lead to this animals decline in number.

There are a number of different types of Shrews in Tanzania.

Some include Desperate Shrew and the Tanzanian Shrew.

Cheetahs where once kept as pets by the African American and

European, but their population has declined. The Pemba Flying

Bat is actually a type of fruit bat. The only place that it is found

is off of the island of Tanzania.

Serengeti National Park

Some of the animals in Serengeti National Park include

Zebra, Gazelle, Gnus, Wildebeest, Lions, Cheetahs, Antelopes,

Baboons, Buffaloes, Elephants, and Flamingos. Migration

happens in Serengeti National Park. Along the Gnus migration,

a triangular journey is about 500 miles long. Along the way, the

weaker animals are fed to the Lions, Cheetahs, and Leopards.

During their migration, Gnus will run into many non-migrating

animals such as Cape buffalo, hippos, and giraffes.

Sweets and Fruits

Tanzania treats for sale at an open-air market include

filled pastries and potato cakes. Woman without stoves or

a refrigerator, she still can create cakes, buns, doughnuts,

flatcakes, rice-flour, bread, stews, meatballs, and ugali,

with only a pan and firewood. The most common drink in

Tanzania is tea, tea leaves sometimes with the additional

cardomon seeds or ginger, and the result is called chai.

There are many fruits including mangoes, guavas,

pineapples, and more exotic are jackfruit, breadfruit, and

we know bananas, and oranges. Kitumbua and sugar cane

are popular snacks or energy boosters.

Traditional and Hard to get Food

Food is often prepared by pounding grain to

make flour, then preparing a meal by the flour, by the

woman. Many people roast a young goat, called

mbuzi, on the birth of a child, circumcision, or a

wedding. Those who are fortunate enough to live

beside the Indian Ocean or on the shores of one of

the Great Lakes maybe able to add varieties of fish

and other seafood to their diet.

Facts about Food

Everything is made without electricity or machinery of any

kind. Most of the foods eaten in Tanzania are typically found in

East Africa. The basic food is ugali, made from the local grain-

flour usually maize. (Corn) Food stalls in the streets sell

mishkaki which are kabobs of goat or stringy beef, BBQ chicken,

triangular spicy samosas, and very hot chili bites called bhajia.

Ugali is a stiff porridge usually made from corn or maize, but it

takes some work to make it. Important staple foods are rice,

bananas, and ugali.

Tanzanian Fashion/Trends

Tanzanian clothing is a mixture of old and new cloths. A

piece of clothing that is a mixture of an old fashion is called the

kanga. The Kanga is brightly painted with many colors.

Tanzanian women wrap their self more, and use the kanga to

carry their babies.

Jewelry

Tanzanian cloths are similar to the east African dress

code. They wear lots of bright colors, wrap themselves,

and wear bright jewelry. Many Tanzanians wear jeans and

a t-shirt much like everyone all over the world. Tanzanians

wear robs, beads, and oversized earrings.

Fashion in History

Since 160 western style pants and shirts became popular

to men. A type of clothing that many men wear is called the

Kansu. The Kansu is a white rob. The Kansu goes to about your

ankle, and the men add a red Muslim cap to add detail to their

outfit. Almost all Tanzanian men just wear a-rob and jeans.

Favorite\most Common Recreations

Tanzanian’s enjoy many recreational activities. Dancing

and singing are two most common recreations. Soccer is

Tanzanian’s national sport. Volleyball and netball are favorites

among girls. The country is known for its world class track

runners.

Popular Sports

Soccer is the most popular sport in Tanzania. A number of

Tanzanian’s having become world-class track runners. Young

girls also play redid, a game similar to soccer. Tanzanian’s on

the coast play Mboa.

Entertainment

For entertainment Tanzanian’s enjoy listening to music.

Tanzanian’s like to do storytelling and dancing. Tanzanian’s like

to socialize at coffee houses and visit friends and relatives. They

also enjoy watching television.
