Unique products for rectangular sedimentation tanks

A unique range of products

Zickert Products specializes in the provision of sedimentation products for use in local authority drinking-water purification plants, sewage treatment works and industrial waste water treatment systems.

In addition to our own well-known range, we also market productsfor oil/water separation and recycling of industrial process water. We can assist in the planning of turn-key solutions to meet particularrequirements.

Products from Zickert are characterized by their originality, whichexplains why so many of them are also patented. Development of new products in close cooperation with our customers is an ongoingprocess.

Zickert Products

Zickert Products was established in Kungsbacka, just south of Göteborg on the West Coast of Sweden, in 1973. Today we have premises in both Göteborg and Kungsbacka.

For the most part, production takes place in our own premises, although certain components are bought in from carefully selectedsuppliers.

Zickert Products became a Division of Nordic Water Products ABin 2001, a move that has enhanced our resources.

Keeping the environment to the fore

It goes without saying, of course, that all water treatment operationshelp to protect the environment. Thus it’s only natural that the products used in those operations should also take the environmentinto account where materials, techniques and the production processare concerned.

Our products have been specially designed to keep energy consumption low without the need to compromise on performance. The Z 4000 FlocBee and the Z 6600 Siphon consume very little energyor none at all, and the Zickert complete sludge scraping system, inclu-ding bottom scrapers, surface scrapers and scum pipes can also beoperated with the minimum of energy consumption.

Our products are designed for long economic life. But R&D is acontinuing process, new technology is continuously on the way, andfuture legislation to protect the environment will make even morestringent demands. That is why the products Zickert offers today aredesigned to take into account the environmental needs and water treatment techniques of tomorrow.

The complete sludge scraping system:Tailor-made to meet individual requirements

Zickert’s complete sludge scraping system provides an overall solution to the problems of sludge sedimentation. It consists of threeseparate products working together: the Z 2000 bottom scraper, theZ 3900 surface scraper and the Z 6300 scum pipe.

Each of the three has its own power unit, which means that it canbe controlled and regulated independently of the others, optimizingthe sedimentation process and simplifying both operation and maintenance.

The system is easy to adapt for use with existing tanks, and instal-lation is not dependent on the direction of scraping where either thebottom scraper or the surface scraper are concerned. The resultingflexibility can help to achieve considerable savings. There is no needfor extra pipe extensions for transportation of surface sludge from the scum pipe, for example.

Special features based on wide experience

Various items of special equipment designed to complement the system are also available. These are based on considerable experiencederived from installations all over the world.

For tanks with no sludge pits, for instance, the Z 6000 Siphon sludge pump can be installed. It consists of a pipe with an integralsump that can be connected to a suction line.

Zickert also markets a number of products for the inlet side ofwaste water treatment. Here sedimentation can be improved by installing a Z 4000 FlocBee. In addition, pipes in various versions are available for the outlet side.

Automatic system control

All the electrical equipmentrequired for controlling andmonitoring the system is gatheredtogether in a single control box.

Standard control boxes are inglass-fibre reinforced plastic orstainless steel.

Z2000

nordic water ZICKERT

Bottom sludge scraperThe Z 2000 is a bottom sludge scraper specially designed for continu-ous transportation of sludge. Z 2000s have been used with success in anumber of different types of sedimentation system.

The scraper consists of either an hydraulic system or an electricmotor, a lever system and a number of wedge-shaped sections weldedtogether to form a single unit so that they function as a moving floorover the bottom of the tank.

The principle involved in the Z 2000 is that of the forward andreturn movement of the hydrodynamically designed sections. Whenthe sections move forward, the concave faces of the wedges transportthe sludge with them in the direction of the sludge pit. During thereturn movement, the points of the wedges slide under the blanket ofsludge, so that it flows over them. The speed of the return movementis approximately double that of the forward movement, to give continuous transportation of the sludge.

Thus, where a blanket of sludge has been formed, the Z 2000scrapes it, but from the underside. Where the sludge has such a lowtotal solids content that no blanket is formed, the sections produce a flow along the bottom of the tank. The repeated movements of thesections have the effect of thickening the sludge, thus increasing itstotal solids content while at the same time guiding it towards the sludgepit. This feature is of particular importance in drinking-water purifi-cation plants, where higher total solids content reduces the volume ofsludge to be pumped and thus reduces energy consumption.

Easy to adapt for use in existing tanks

The design of the Z 2000 allows considerable latitude where positioning of the hydraulic system or electric motor is concerned. Whether drawn or propelled, the scraper will produce the sameresults. It is even possible to position the hydraulic system’s cylinderhorizontally below the surface of the water, in which case the numberof moving parts is reduced from four to one.

Nor does the bottom of the tank need to be level for the Z 2000 toproduce good results. It should, however, be either horizontal or slopetowards the sludge pit.

Simple to install, simple to maintain

The design of the Z 2000 has been kept as straightforward as possible, which means that it is simple to install. Components for standard scrapers are always held in stock. A completely new standard scrapercan therefore be installed in the course of 2–3 weeks. The actual siteinstallation time is usually only 2–5 working days.

The maintenance required is minimal. The few moving parts andsmall forces involved mean that the strains to which the scraper is subjected are also small. There is relatively little friction between thescraper and the bottom of the tank, since the sections run along stripsmade of high-density polythene. The power required to drive the scraper along the bottom of the tank is therefore very low. These factors make for sensitive operation and long economic life.

Except for the strips, all materials submerged in the water aremade of stainless steel.

Product characteristics

■■ Few moving parts■■ Minimum of maintenance■■ Continuous sludge transportation■■ No interruption of the sedimentation process■■ High operational reliability■■ Easy to adapt for use in existing tanks■■ Sludge thickening function

The concave faces of the wedges scrape the blanket of sludge from the underside. During their return movement, the wedges slide theirway under the blanket so as not to interrupt the sedimentation process, moving approximately twice as fast as during their forward movement.

Where the sludge has such a low total solids content that no blanket is formed on the bottom of the tank, the action of the scrapercreates a constant flow of sludge towards the sludge pit, thickening itas it does so.

The stroke length is always longer than the gap between sections.

A flexible friend

The above examples illustrate the ways in which the Z 2000 can beadapted to meet the most varied of requirements, thanks to the factthat it is not dependent on the positioning of the power unit. The Z 2000 is highly suitable for use in practically all rectangular tanks, and can even be installed in tanks with uprights in them. For furthersuggestions tailored to meet individual requirements, please contactyour local Zickert representative, who will be happy to advise.

Hydrodynamic design

The design of the sections has been arrived at as a result of extensivescientific tests. Experiments in testing tanks have shown that the concave format offers the optimum solution with different types ofsludge and at different speeds, and produces the best thickeningresults. In other words, it combines the best hydrodynamic designwith the best sludge transportation solution.

The speed at which the scraper is operated is determined by thetype of sludge.

High-density polythene slides

The sections rest on either three or five steel bars, depending on thewidth of the tank. They slide on longitudinal slides made of high-density polythene. Wear is thus reduced to a minimum, and slides usually have an economic life of about ten years.

The slides are supplied in lengths of 2 m. Fastening to the bottomof a concrete tank is by means of spiked screws. Where the tank ismade of steel, fastening brackets are used and are welded to the tank bottom.

No adaptation needed for most tanks and bottoms

The design of the scraper makes very few demands of the condition ofthe tank bottom. Even where the bottom slopes sideways or there arelongitudinal depressions, the Z 2000 will function satisfactorily.

The Z 2000 can also be adapted for use in tanks with varying widths.

Simple to install

The Z 2000 is simple to install, and only two men are required for thejob. No lifting devices or other complicated equipment are needed. The total time taken to install a 20x6 m scraper is normally about aweek.

Assembly procedure

First the steel bars are laid out. The sections are then laid at right angles to them, across the whole area of the tank. Once the sectionshave been welded to the bars, the slides can be placed in positionunder the bars and fastened to the tank bottom. The whole scraper iscentred before it is welded to its drawbar. The hydraulic unit orelectric motor is then positioned and connected, and the scrapersystem dry-tested.

Page 10: Tank Bottom Scraper Zickert_en

nordic water ZICKERT

Hydraulically-powered scrapers

There are two different standard hydraulic units available for use withthe Z 2000. The single-motor unit is intended for use with single scra-pers, and the double-motor unit for use with double installations.

The units are of low pressure type, and are fitted with manometersand regulating valves that make it possible to adjust the speed of boththe forward and return movements. Outgoing pressure to the cylinderis 20–70 bar, and can be read off on the manometer. Maximum press-ure is set on delivery, with the help of the pressure limiter on the unit.

Hydraulic units require very little maintenance, and any main-tenance that is required is easy to carry out.

All the components used are of standard type, which means thatany spare parts needed are readily available from local hydraulic engineering suppliers.

Outdoor installation

Standard hydraulic units installed outdoors will function satisfactorilyin ambient temperatures of from +35˚C down to -20˚C. With ambienttemperatures of less than +10˚C a heating element should be used(available as an optional extra).

Hydraulic oil

The hydraulic oil used is classed as environmentally acceptable. Thatused in installations in drinking-water purification plants is classed asnon-hazardous.

The single-motor unit holds 70 l of oil, the double-motor unit 90 l.

Flexible positioning

Standard hydraulic units can be positioned up to 30 m from cylinders, and the drive mechanism at the most convenient end of the tank. This flexibility makes the scraper more easily adaptable to fit in withexisting installations such as walkways, tank dimensions, the positionof the hydraulic units and other practical aspects. As a result, norebuilding of existing tanks is usually required before installation.

⇑ The Z 3900 has a separate slide for each blade. Several slides can operate on the same frame in series, each with its own blade. Only theblades themselves come into contact with the sludge

⇐ The slide features a patented switching link that angles the bladeupwards or downwards when an end position is reached. This ensuresthat the sludge does not accompany the blade during its return move-ment and also means that, where several slides and blades are installedin series, the sludge is passed from one blade to the next on its way to the scum pipe

The Z 3900 is available with either an electric motor or an hydraulicoperating system. The electric motor is supplied complete with protective housing

⇓ The blade draws off the whole of the tank’s surface

Page 12: Tank Bottom Scraper Zickert_en

Z3900

Surface sludge scraperThe Z 3900 sludge scraper is designed for efficient removal of surfacesludge with a minimum of transportation water. It is suitable for use in most applications in which surface sludge occurs, including bothlocal authority waste water treatment installations and industrial process waste water treatment systems, and is easy to adapt for use inflotation tanks or where lamella systems are in use. The scraper issimple to install, is reliable in operation and has few moving parts.

The scraper blade draws off the whole of the tank’s surface, transporting the sludge to a scum pipe or scum beach.

The Z 3900 is characterized by its step-by-step movement. The drive bar moves forwards and returns, the blade being fastened toa slide that is moved forward stage by stage by the drive bar. A system of levers on the slide changes its direction of movement when itreaches its end position. Thus it’s possible to install several blades inseries in one and the same tank, the sludge being passed from oneblade to the next on its way to the scum pipe. Each blade is angledupwards 90̊ during its return movement, to ensure that sludge doesnot accompany it.

To obtain maximum sludge dry solids content, the Z 3900 should be combined with a Z 6300 or Z 6500 scum pipe. These pipes are automatically angled downwards as blades approach them. As a resultthe volume of transportation water accompanying the sludge will bekept to a minimum, in fact considerably lower than with many othertypes of surface scraper.

Both the Z 3900 and the scum pipes are available in either electrically or hydraulically powered versions.

Chain scraperThe Z 3800 chain scraper features materials and components thatguarantee long, problem-free operation. The steel used is acid-resistant. Where appropriate, plastic components are used as theyare lighter and resistant to wear. Each individual application presents its own special requirements, and these are matched by the choice of materials used.

Non-metallic version

We can also offer the Z 3800 in a version that is 100% metal-free, allcomponents being made of modern structural plastics.

Collector chain

The Z 3800's collector chain is made of integrally moulded links offibre-glass reinforced Nylon-6. It is thus extremely durable, non-corrosive and simple to assemble.

Drive chain

The Z 3800's drive chain is made of the same fibre-glass reinforcedNylon-6, which protects it from ultraviolet light. The links are coupledtogether by stainless steel knurled pins.

Flights

The channel-shaped flights are of fibre-glass reinforced resin. Standard dimensions are 3x8 inches, suitable for tank widths of up to 12 m when strengthened with special stiffeners.

Nylon-6 integrally moulded flight attachment links ensure that the flights are firmly attached to the collector chain. The links are extremely durable and are designed for heavy-duty use. Two non-metallic filler blocks provide rigid support at the point at which aflight is connected to the chain.

Fixed scum pipe

Scum beach

As its name suggests, the Z 6300 scum pipe is automatically angled orrotated to the exact extent required to receive the sludge decanted bythe surface scraper. Its movement can be controlled by a water levelgauge in the tank itself.

The Z 6300 is best suited for use with sludge with a low total solidscontent. With stable water levels it’s possible to remove the exact sludge phase required.

The scum pipe is available in electrically or hydraulically poweredversions, or may be operated with the help of a manual lever. Instal-lation is straightforward, and special embedment fittings are availablefor securing it to the wall of the tank.

The Z 6300 is available in two sizes, with diameters of either 200 mmor 300 mm. The materials used are 100% stainless steel.

The Z 6500 is a fixed scum pipe with an adjustable forward edge or‘lip’. When the lip is folded down inside the pipe, sludge passes intothe pipe over the lip.

Thanks to its angled bottom, the Z 6500 has high capacity, and isparticularly suitable for applications where sludge has a higher totalsolids content.

The scum pipe is available in electrically or hydraulically poweredversions, or may be operated with the help of a manual lever. It can be fitted close in to the end of a tank. Installation is straightforward. A single working day is normally sufficient.

The Z 6500 is available in two sizes, with widths of either 200 mm or300 mm. A sump can be included if required. The materials used are100% stainless steel.

The Z 6900 scum beach can be fitted in either a concrete or a sheetsteel scum pipe on a permanent basis, and is best suited for use with sludge with a high total solids content. It is usually used in flotationapplications.

A sump can be included if required. Dimensions in accordancewith individual specifications. The materials used are stainless steel.

FlocBee™

These unique static floc builders help to distribute water more evenlythroughout sedimentation tanks, eliminating dead zones and turbu-lence. The damping effect contributes to rapid floc building beforesedimentation begins.

FlocBees are designed to be installed over sludge pits.In the case of an installation in an existing circular tank, use is

made of the tank’s concrete structure, and only minor modificationsare normally necessary.

Where the tank in question is a circular one in course of construc-tion, a straightforward steel structure in the centre of the tank can be used to replace the more usual concrete one, and serves as the FlocBee’s foundations.

A FlocBee soon pays for itself. The expenditure involved is lessthan that for installing a conventional floc building unit with a flocculation chamber and paddle.

There are no moving parts in FlocBees and no operating or main-tenance costs. And better use is made of precipitating chemicals, leading to direct savings.

Improved floc building

The rate of sedimentation is increased when a FlocBee or TurboFlocis installed. This is because the flocs are already larger when they enterthe tank, thus increasing the tank’s total flocculating capacity. Higherrates of flow are possible without the occurrence of sludge flight, evenunder peak load conditions such as those following heavy rainfall.

Many applications

Z 4000 FlocBees have proven to be a success in a number of differentwater treatment applications. They can be used in connection withpre-precipitation, simultaneous precipitation, biological flocculation/sedimentation and post-precipitation. They can also be used in drinking-water purification plants and in industrial waste water treat-ment processes where damping and/or improved flocculation arerequired.

Product characteristics

■■ Improved visibility in the tank■■ Results maintained/improved even under

peak load conditions■■ Reduction in total phosphorus (PTOT)■■ Reduction in suspended matter■■ Reduction in formation of surface sludge■■ Reduction in sludge flight under heavy loads■■ Reduction in volume of precipitating chemicals required■■ No flocculation paddles required

The Z 4000 FlocBee consists of two cylinders, the bottom edge of theouter one sealed against the walls of the central one. The central cylinder is open at both ends.

The outer cylinder has a feed pipe near its bottom. Incoming water isled in via the feed pipe. The direction of flow is around and upwards, through the aperture in the central cylinder and so downwards and outinto the tank.

The FlocBee has a damping effect on the water, helping to increase the rate of flocculation. For optimum results the dimensions should be matched to the requirements of the individual application

Z6600

The Z 6600 Siphon sludge outlet device presents a system for continu-ous removal of sludge from rectangular sedimentation tanks. It can be used in tanks of all sizes, from very small ones to large ones forpost-sedimentation, and with flows of up to 750 m3/h. The Z 6600Siphon has been in production since 1992.

The system works on the principle that a number of pipes are positioned vertically across the width of a tank. By means of a siphoneffect, sludge is sucked up through the pipes and out into a sludgeduct common to them all. Capacity is controlled via an adjustablespillway in the sludge duct. The outlet is positioned on one of the longitudinal sides of the tank, so that two tanks can share the samesludge duct. A supplementary air intake is available for applicationsin which capacity is to be varied during operation, air ducts beinginserted at the bottom ends of the pipes and each pipe being fittedwith its own air valve.

Z 6600 Siphons are dimensioned for individual applications and to meet customers’ specifications. The system is cost-effective and requires a minimum of maintenance and service.

Eliminating the need for sludge pits

The Z 6600 Siphon can be used to advantage in tanks with no sludgepits. Where the sludge has a low total solids content, it should be transported following the downstream principle. To achieve optimumperformance, the Z 6600 should be combined with a Z 2000 bottomscraper, to give consistent sludge quality with maximum total solidscontent.
