The Mindzone
Students and staff at THS have worked with Hunter New England Mental
Health staff to put together a collection of quality resources to help support
the health and wellbeing of the school community. Joblink Plus provided the
school with a grant to purchase the resources. This resource was designed by a group of Yr9 students and called “The Mindzone” and ideas were sought
from students across the school about what resources would be useful. The
resource is located in the library and students will shortly be able to access and borrow these resources. The resource was officially launched on
Tuesday 25th October and it attracted much positive publicity and feedback.
The promotion of healthy
wellbeing is important to the school, and a series of events
have been planned by students
to raise awareness of “The Mindzone” and to promote
healthy wellbeing. Please
check out “The Mindzone”
next time you are in the library.

P&C Meeting - The next P&C meeting will be on Tuesday 15th November at
6:30pm in the Library, all welcome. Prior to the meeting there will be a tour of the New Trade Training Facilities @ 6pm.
Congratulations to - the new Prefect body lead by the Captains and Vice
Captains who attended the P&C meeting this week to introduce themselves and
let the P&C know of their plans and aspirations whilst leading the student body. We look forward to your column in future BUZZ’s letting the whole community
know of your projects and involvements. Thanks to Maree Black and her
husband who took great initiative during the holiday break to purchase and plant some new shrubs around the administration block that will eventually make a
hedge.
New Bus - Yes, the long awaited new bus for THS students has been purchased by the P&C. Thanks to Mr Allen and members of the P&C who took time in the
holidays to secure the new air-conditioned bus for us. We look forward to its
delivery to the school soon.
Building - During the holidays members of the P&C met with Mr Chaffey, Mr
Woods and members from Properties DEC to draft up plans to revamp the
canteen. Thanks to the people for their time to get this great project organised
for the Christmas break.
New Bus Shed - Friday last week P&C met with Mr Seibels, Mr Chaffey and
Mr Allen to find the best spot for the new bus shed. The decision was to
construct it beside the Arts Centre and it will be large enough for two buses and a trailer. We ask that everyone take pride in THS and don’t let anyone destroy
things that we have all worked hard for.
Uniform Pool - Open Thursday lunch and by appointment when required, please contact the school office to arrange a time. New and pre-loved school
uniform items are available. School Ties are available at the canteen for just
$18, as well as socks for hockey and football for $10. We are always looking
for extra help, so if you have a spare hour or so each week, please let us know.
New School Leaving Age
To ensure that all young people have the best possible chances in life, since
2010 it has been compulsory for all NSW students to complete Yr 10. After
Yr 10 and until the age of 17, students must be:
in school or registered for home schooling, OR
in approved education or training, OR
in full-time paid employment (average 25 hrs per week), OR
in a combination of these
Students in Yr 10 or below need to start thinking about the best options. Take
the opportunity to discuss the available options with your school principal,
careers adviser, year adviser or teacher.
Yr 9 Food Technology Excursion to Flagstaff As part of a Food for Special Needs unit, Yr 9 recently went on a bushwalk
from Tamworth Lookout to Flagstaff Mountain. Students learnt about the
importance of eating and drinking well when out in the bush, and also learning about their own physical limitations. All were amazed by the spectacular
views of the areas surrounding Tamworth.

Festivities Thank you Prefects!
Coles Vouchers! Once again Ms Carlisle offered to collect Coles Vouchers to obtain much
needed sporting equipment. Her Support Class, JIM helped count the vouchers
each week. This was a mammoth task, as roll groups were competing against each other to see who could bring in the most vouchers. Each week the
vouchers came in their hundreds. Her class spent many hours counting the
vouchers. This was an excellent activity as it helped them with their mathematical skills. They had to put the coupons into tens, then hundreds and
finally thousands. They worked with enthusiasm and were surprised when we
reached 40,000+ vouchers. This will enable the school to redeem the vouchers
for some much needed equipment for both the support unit and the PDHPE department. The accompanying photos show the class busily counting the
vouchers. The winning Roll Groups were Mrs Murray’s Roll, F7; Mrs Smith’s
Roll B6 and Mrs Hickson’s SRC Roll. The P&C have offered a reward for the winning groups which will be redeemed later in the term. Each of these roll
groups collected over 2,000 vouchers. Well done!

Canopic Jars Canopic Jars were used in the home of pharaohs to store and preserve the organs. Students researched Ancient Egyption burial practices and used this knowledge
to design their own canopic jar. The jars are displayed in the front foyer of the
school.

Everingham Solomons Law Bursary
Each year, Everingham Solomons offers a Tamworth, Gunnedah,
Manilla or Quirindi Yr12 student wishing to undertake university
study in law the opportunity to receive a Bursary funded by this firm. The Sir Adrian Solomons Memorial Law Bursary was first
granted in 1998. It provides financial assistance for the successful
applicant during their first year as well as an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in our offices periodically throughout the duration of
their studies. In September each year the Principals of local high schools are
contacted and advised of the details. Interested students can then liaise with the
principal or careers advisor, who will assist them in making a formal application for this Bursary. The selection process does not depend solely on academic
merit. We appreciate that students come from a variety of backgrounds and
accordingly the selection process concentrates on the attributes of the student as a whole rather than merely academic achievement.
Recipient of the Bursary will receive:
Two weeks per year paid work experience in the offices of Everingham Solomons
$1000 to go towards tuition fees or books
Prerequisites
You must be intending to enrol in a Bachelor of Law Degree and subsequently commence study.
How to apply?
Contact your Principal or Careers Advisor who will assist you in making an application or email our Office Manager at [email protected]
enclosing a letter of application and a copy of your resume (noting contact
details including mobile phone number and email address). Applications close end of November.

It’s not every day that two high profile Australian Olympic athletes drop into
town, however last Thursday 24th October, students from THS were provided an
invaluable experience to listen to one former and one current Australian Olympian speak about their sporting experiences in their chosen field of Water
Polo. Both Rebecca Rippon and Amy Hetzel represented Australia in Water
Polo at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. They brought their coveted bronze medals to show the students which they received after beating Hungary in a
penalty shoot out, in the third and fourth play-off. They discussed the highs and
lows associated with sport at the elite level, identifying the dedication and
commitment required to remain at the top.
Rebecca Rippon suffered the disappointment of missing out on a medal at the
2004 Athens Olympics, finishing fourth after losing to the USA. The girls discussed the significance of the introduction of Women’s Water Polo to the
Olympic programme at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. They both believed
Australia’s gold medal performance against the USA (watched live by Hetzel)
was the motivation for them to persevere, follow their dreams and eventually play for the “Stingers”.
Despite their successes the girls spoke of the internal and external pressures of elite sport in balancing training and work without significant sponsorship, the
disappointments of not getting selected, the pressures you place on yourself, the
temptations (chocolate) outside of competing and the mental anguish associated with injuries. They addressed the importance of psychological training to cope
with the lows and the physiological training 6 days a week and the dietary
requirements of a high carbohydrate & protein intake, to meet the demands of
their sport.
This event was made possible by Peel HS PDHPE teacher Lisa Panton emailing
the AOC (Australian Olympic Committee) to have Olympians come to Tamworth as a part of the Australian Olympic Committee’s Talk. With Peel HS
hosting the event, Lisa emailed all the local schools and invited them all to be a
part of this unique opportunity. We wish Rebecca Rippon the best in gaining
selection for the 2012 London Olympics and we hope that along with her team mates, Australia can win gold and continue to inspire our young athletes at THS
towards attaining their Olympic dreams and ultimately, that elusive gold medal.
