A Brief Overview

Summer Fields School Parents' Association (Regd)4

Some 27% students go to private schools today

The average teacher-student ratio in India is 1:42 as compared to 1:25 globally

Shortage of schools currently led to provide education to larger student population

This gap provides ample opportunity to private schools to exploit parents

The Gaps: Indian Scenario

Summer Fields School Parents' Association (Regd)5

• Lack of Policies and laws related to Education

• The Education Act is silent on major issues like fees, Infrastructure in schools, teacher student ratio, Involvement of parents in PTA through democratic process

• Political nexus of school authorities leading to arbitrary approach by the management

• Observatory role played by the Education Department

The Ground Realities

Summer Fields School Parents' Association (Regd)6

• Today an average parent spends about half a lakh annually on their wards to get so called “education” from private schools in India

• The private schools are increasing fees arbitrarily, inspite of having surplus funds in their kitty.

• There is No Independent Agency to check the malpractices of the private schools.

• The school funds are diverted to purchase “assets” for personal use by the management

The Ground Realities

The schools flout all norms as laid by government like providing education to economically weaker sections of the society

Page 8: Tamso Maa Jyotirgamya 1

The Ground Realities

Summer Fields School Parents' Association (Regd)8

• The education cases in courts related to fee hike & other malpractices by schools are delayed because of political pressures

• The Judges of the Hon. Courts do not have courage to penalize the govt. or school’s counsel’s, who waste the precious time of the judiciary by not coming on hearing dates, thereby lingering the whole process

• The very own government’s party representatives fight against the poor parents in the court and our government says that they are “pro-poor”
