VES’ annual Sweetheart Supper, held on February 11th, was a sold-out event! Coordi-nators Theresa Baus, Monica Julien, and Shari Valencic worked to bring families to cam-
pus to enjoy each others’ company close to the loveliest holiday of the year. Tammy Vowell
and Safety Patrol members sold drinks, while Bethany Beebe sold desserts supplied by Stu-
dent Council members. The next day, 100s of grandmas, grandpas, and other special friends shared breakfast with their favorite Little Indians. Thanks to chairperson Stephanie Fisher, who coordinated
this event for the PTO, as well as Kati Burns, who operated the “All-You-Can-Read Diner”
book fair during the events, as well as the rest of the week at school!

School Vision Venice Elementary desires to be a caring and compassionate school in which all staff are given professional respect, participatory management and a wealth of teaching resources. In such an environment, Venice Elementary will produce students who posses knowledge and can utilize that knowledge when interacting with others. We believe in the ability of all students, and envision no achievement gap between any disaggregate segments of our population. We desire to provide an environment for our students in which they may effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas to others and learn from one another. Venice Elementary desires to prepare our students to be healthy indi-viduals academically, artistically, physically, and emotionally so that they may be success-ful participants in our society.
School Pledge As a Venice Little Indian, I pledge to always
Show respect to my fellow beings, Be truthful and honest at all times, Take responsibility for my actions,
Do what I know to be true, Give kindness and assistance whenever needed.

School Expectations Be respectful. Be responsible. Be an achiever. Be peaceful.
Principal’s Beat March, 2009
Dear VES Families, While February was a cold and dreary month for Florida, it was warm and toasty inside the VES building. Our warmth and feelings of happiness came from your children’s dedication to help needy families in Haiti.
Throughout the first two weeks of February, stu-dents did chores at home to earn money. They brought this money to school to donate to a classroom bucket. The money collected in all of the buckets at school, and all of the money from Dr. Vu’s class’ Hugs and Kisses project, went towards purchasing a shelter box for a needy family in Haiti. When all of the funds were counted, our amazing students raised $1,526 in donations. The check was pre-sented to Lat Farr, representing the Venice Rotary Club,
on the VES news at the beginning of March. Mr. Farr informed our children that the Ro-tary Club had a member who would match our donation, and since one shelter box costs $1,000, the students of VES would have 3 boxes purchased in their name. He said one of the shelter box tents could possibly be used as a surgical tent. As I reflect on this amazing accomplishment, I am reminded what it means to be an American. To care about the well-being of others, and to give of yourself physically and financially is a core hallmark of the American spirit. We grow this spirit in our children when we embrace projects such as this, and I thank you for your partnership with our staff to help those in Haiti. March blew in with unusually cold days and brought the FCAT along with it. Our students were amazingly well-prepared and the testing appeared to cause limited stress. We look forward to the results in May, or June, or whenever they arrive. Thank you again for your support of our school. The Sweetheart Supper was a tre-mendous success as was the Scholastic Book Fair. We all love the Little Indian Run and are looking forward to March 25th! With love, xoxo Mrs. Baus

Prekindergarten! VES is pleased to welcome September Kelly to its staff! Miss Kelly succeeds
Mrs. Sally Pisciotti, who retired in December.
1st Grade! 1st grade is excited about their upcoming field trip to the Venice Gondolier Sun
offices. They will be touring the buildings and learning the steps for publishing a news-paper. They also will be looking at the machines used to print the newspaper. 1st grad-ers are learning how to publish their own writing in class after editing and revising. This field trip will help make writing a more meaningful experience in class.
Students had a terrific time celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday. Children com-pleted thematic units about Dr Seuss. They learned about preserving the environment while reading The Lorax. They wrote about places to which they would like to travel while reading Oh! The Places You'll Go! Students enjoyed exploring websites about Dr. Seuss including www.seussville.com .
2nd Grade! 2nd graders welcomed Ms. Capek and her Audubon Society volunteers to guide them in a bird study.
Ms. Capek presented a PowerPoint presentation of various local birds and challenged the students to create a bird. Then, they braved the cold weather to learn how to use binoculars and scopes to view the birds around their school grounds. Thanks to the generosity of the PTO, this month they will take a field trip to the South Venice Rookery and Lemon Bay Park. There they will be able to view birds nesting in their native habitats and learn about other native plants and animals on a walking tour.
3rd Grade! Venice Elementary 3rd graders were hard at work practicing for their recorder concert on February
24th. The students also celebrated the last visit from their high school peers with a kickball game and popcorn treat. The peers visited once each week to help students with reading comprehension and test-taking skills. The Spanish Point field trips were tremendous successes. Students enjoyed the chance to see middens from thousands of years ago. They also got to put their archaeological skills to work as they dug for artifacts buried in the soil. 4th Grade!
4th graders have all heaved a great sigh of relief! FCAT Writes is over for this year and the students were phenomenal. Hard work really does pay off! They also were delighted to be able to visit the South Florida Museum, Aquarium and Planetarium again this year. Besides the historic exhibits and IMAX movie, the 4th graders were able to eat lunch with Snooty the Manatee. It was a fabulous field trip and their thanks go out to the PTO for providing funds to make the trip possible.
5th Grade! Ms. Coleman’s class would like to welcome Ms. Jana Minorini to their classroom. She is completing
her Level III teaching internship and will be teaching through the end of April. Welcome to 5th Grade! They would also like to congratulate Stephanie Nielsen and Morgan Hills. They both completed
the math and science sections on fcatexplorer.com. What a great way to prepare for success in taking the upcoming FCAT!
As part of their ongoing economics unit, students are busy working in their classroom jobs to earn a weekly paycheck. At the end of each month, they have a chance to spend their hard-earned money. Two students even combined their savings for a total of $7000. Wow! Hard work is paying off!
Fractions, Fractions everywhere!! Ms. Minorini is exploring fraction concepts with her math class. Con-gratulations to all students who completed 100 days of Math Minute activities!
Students have been reading to earn 20 Reading Counts points to attend the Stone Crabs home base-ball game in April. They will be honored guests who may participate in a kid’s carnival and be recognized during the opening ceremonies. Way to go to Bea Abancio, Joey Casella, George Cemovich, Patch
Chen, Payton Cusimano, Dawid Dobryniewski, Tristan Guin, Jason Hopkins, Owen Kuschel, Ci-
ara Leichty, Kaelob Ruff, Marissa Smith, Shane Toepfer, and Robin Weeks for already reaching this
goal!

5th Grade! Dr. Vu’s students have been busy at work sharpening their test-taking skills for this
month’s FCAT testing. In between, they have been relishing their reading of Lewis Carroll’s fantasy Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Students will be using their knowledge of this classical literature to compare it to other written and cinematic versions, including … perhaps … the newest film version which opened in theaters earlier this month. They will be celebrating the end of the 3rd quarter with their own mad tea party, which will feature treats intricate to the novel including orange marmalade, tarts, and even mock turtle soup!
In social studies, students are engaging in a month-long comparative study of the major U.S. con-flicts: the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, the Persian Gulf War, and the War on Terror. Students are conducting multimedia re-search (including accessing information in “old fashioned” encyclopedias!) that will conclude with a compre-hensive PowerPoint project in April.
Dr. Vu is proud of her class’ contributions to execute the school’s Hugs & Kisses and Haiti fundraisers! In Ms. Williams’ math classes, students have been working hard on addition and subtraction of
fractions and mixed numbers with both like and unlike denominators. Students have done marvelously well. Most remembered the basics from math last year and just flew through the skills in this chapter. Stu-dents know to leave their answers in lowest terms and in simplest form. They also know to look for equiva-lent answers when answering a multiple choice question. (This will help them on FCAT.) The class has now begun working on multiplication and division of fractions. Learning to cross-cancel is their current challenge.
In science, classes started a study of changes affecting Earth’s surface. They are currently working on the rock cycle. Students read about the three different basic types of rocks: igneous rock (formed from molten rock), sedimentary rock (formed from other rocks that have been weathered, eroded, and depos-ited in a new location), and metamorphic rock (formed by extreme changes of heat and pressure). Students have discussed the fact that any of the above types of rock can be formed by any of the other types of rock as the rock changes throughout its “life”.
To expand on weathering and erosion, the class watched parts of a PBS documentary on the Dust Bowl, a time in American History where tremendous dust storms sometimes blacked out the skies. Some storms started at the Rocky Mountains and blew eastward to the coast. The dire situation of the farmers of the Great Plains was finally made clear to the government when a dust storm entirely blacked out Wash-ington D.C.
Special thanks to Mrs. Kristine Miller, who provided a slide show illustrating some dramatic rock
formations. The show was a great kick-off for this unit.
Music! Special congratulations to the VES chorus for a fabu-lous VHS/VMS/VES combined performance on February 16th
at the VHS auditorium! The VES 3rd grade recorder concert was a huge suc-cess! Families were treated to a concert that featured “black belt” recorder players who earned the distinction by memo-rizing a battery of songs which taught different musical skills. Congratulations to the following black belt recorder students:
Ally Guzman, Caroline Aristizabel,
Charles Briandi, Elizabeth Hickey,
Hannah Robertson, Hilton Harris, Karenna DiPillo,
Kelsey Bennett, Mathew, Megan Hartnett,
Miles Schmaling, Mitchell Gaffney, Naomi Pepper,
Nicole McKinnon, Sophie Fraser,
Tanner Pierce, Tatiana Julien, & Thomas Deans
Congratulations also goes to all the 3rd grade musicians, as well as a big “thank you” to all the 3rd grade families for their support at home.

Science Lab! The 3rd and 4th grades are working on a project sponsored by the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program to learn about the need for habitat conservation and for compassionate coexistence with wild crea-tures. Dr. Kay Bannon, a retired Massachusetts professor, wrote a book entitled Gimble Gopher Tortoise Found a New Home, which she uses to teach the students about the gopher tortoise and some other native animals and plants. Each student received an autographed copy of her book. The students will be doing extended activities in art, science, and in the classroom. The Venice High School Zoology Club will also pre-pare and present a PowerPoint program to the students as part of the project.
The schoolyard garden is becoming more real! Finally, there is a definite lot set aside for the garden. During the winter break, the lot was mowed and sprayed to kill the grass in order to ready it for the garden. Plans still need to be finalized with Home Depot who is sponsoring our garden. Part of the gopher tortoise grant above will purchase native plants for the garden to feed any gopher tortoise passing by.
FCAT Time! A clean desk is the sign of a … static teacher! As VES teachers fastidiously prepared students for this month’s Florida Comprehensive Achievement Tests, classrooms were alive with preparation activities that were certainly out-of-the-box … perhaps that’s why the Little Indians were so cool, calm, and collected as stu-dents in grades three, four, and five faced their testing days with complete confidence. Test preparation oc-curred all year long — and in years prior with primary-level teachers encouraging a firm learning foundation. The final weeks before the exams emphasized the finishing touches for students to truly “show off” what they know. As the Tom Tom Talk roved through classrooms the week prior to testing, students certainly were NOT sitting and listening to rote learning activities. Students were using Activboard technology to denote vo-cabulary meaning and compute perimeter. Others were eagerly skimming literature selections, reading in tipis, and working in small groups with teachers, paraprofessionals, and volunteers. Three-dimensional Abra-ham Lincolns hung from ceilings; food chains were diagrammed; and an enormous techno-color sun awaited students’ calculations of Earth’s distance from it. Students were cheering on fellow classmates in spelling games; working in writing notebooks; and leading literature circle discussions. The school was alive with the sounds of FCAT! Teachers’ desks reflected this bevy of activity! Interesting items that awaited their use in lessons in-cluded Dr. Seuss books, a bumblebee poster, food snacks, a hammer, and even a stuffed leprechaun! VES is fortunate to have such an expert and dedicated staff who work hard to ensure students are able to accom-plish all they are able … even if it means a pile or two on their desks.

Parent-Teacher Organization News VES’ “All-You-Can-Read” Scholastic Book Fair was a big hit! The event raised $2,500 for the school and placed an additional $900 worth of new books in classrooms throughout the school. Special thanks to Kati Burns, who coordinated this year’s venture, as well as the Paper Pad, on Venice Avenue, which agreed
to display a VES Book Fair collection box by their register. Enough spare change was collected to purchase 20 books for students who otherwise would not have been able to purchase a book at this event. Thank you, Paper Pad! The PTO met with a representative of QSP, Inc., to investigate the possibility of a new fundraising venture for next year. Everyone is excited about a new opportunity for VES next fall. Due to a change in management, Papa John’s VES Fundraising Nights have been moved to
Wednesdays March 24th, April 28th, and May 26th. Please support the school by ordering dinner
“out” on these days! PTO is gearing up for the Little Indian Run on Thursday, March 25th. The event was kicked off with a special news segment for students. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Barry Zahnd, coordina-
tor for the event.
School Advisory Council Update At the December SAC meeting, the committee welcomed new members Holly Callandra and
Publix representative Dwaine Larkin. The group has been busy discussing methods and materials with
which to promote student achievement. A decision was made to purchase a half-year licensure of the eLearning science enrichment program, which uses computerized “Gizmo” simulations to engage students in learning about scientific concepts. The program will be available to teachers of grades 3-5, for use in the classroom to incorporate technology with science learning. The committee continues to look for ways to sup-port grade level team goals, as well as those of the whole school.
Health Room Update It is hard to believe that the school year is half-way over. Between 60-80 students are seen in the health room each day for various reasons. There was not, however, a significant in-crease of ill students this year due to the H1N1 virus, thanks to the health department’s efforts of getting out and administering the vaccine. As of December 31st, the health department gave a total of 20,600 shots in Sarasota County! Thank you, parents, for getting your children vaccinated as soon as it became available!
Random lice checks in the lower grades started after the winter break. This is done twice yearly. Just a reminder that students are not permitted to carry any medication at school without a doctor’s authorization. This includes over-the-counter medications, such as cough drops, Tylenol, breath mints, sprays or drops, or medicated lollipops. Epi-pen and inhalers may be carried by students only with doctor authorization. If your child has the need for any of these health aids, please contact the health room. Remember as the warm weather begins to happen upon us again, students are allowed to carry a hat in their backpacks to use when outdoors on campus for sun protection. HAPPY SPRING! Mary Pillsbury RN
