Federico is the CEO of Gemstone Real Estate Development LLC, the property development arm of Al Rajhi Holding Group, one of Saudi Arabia’s leading business houses with interests in real estate, building materials, contracting, infrastructure and industry. He is also the CEO of The Land Development Co., a lead developer in the prestigious master development of The Pearl Qatar. He is also Board Member of AEP Investment Management a Global real estate Private Equity firm based in Singapore. He is also Board Member and Chairman of the Investment Committee of Basil Trust a Global Real Estate Investment Fund also based in Singapore. Federico was the President of Tameer Holding Investment, where he took this responsibility in the 2009 crisis and successfully led the completion of 7 projects comprising more than 3,000 residential and commercial properties including some of the World’s tallest residential towers.

1. Can you tell us the story behind Kempinski Residences project in Business Bay?

Kempinski Residences Business Bay, is the product of a very rational development process. In essence, this project aimed to cover the increasing demand of truly luxury serviced residences in the Burj Khalifa area.

Gemstone’s vision was to create a signature residential building, with truly 5 stars hotel services, top quality finishes and modern design, all within the most sought after area in Dubai. Born in April 1950 in Northern Italy, Flavio Briatore started his career working in Milan’s Stock Exchange. In the early eighties he met Luciano Benetton, who became a friend and a mentor and played a key role in Briatore’s career, first in fashion and later in Formula One. In fact, Briatore moved to America and contributed actively to Benetton’s expansion on the US market. He attended, by chance, his first-ever Formula One race at the Australian Grand Prix, in 1988. A year later, Luciano Benetton appointed him Commercial Director of his Formula One team, Benetton Formula Ltd. based in England.

Briatore quickly became Managing Director and set about turning Benetton Formula into a competitive team. He brought into Formula One a unique and innovative management style: he believed that Formula One was not only a sport but also and

foremost entertainment and business, hence he concentrated on marketing and communication as the key elements to attract and secure wealthy sponsors and prestigious partners to the Team.

In 1991, with a quick and visionary move, Briatore hired young driver Michael Schumacher and built up the team around the talented German. In 1994, Schumacher won the driver’s Championship and then Briatore was able to forge a strategic alliance with Renault, and in 1995 the Team reached double success, with Schumacher claiming the World Drivers’ Championship and Benetton Formula winning the World Constructors’ Championship. In 1993 Briatore also created FB Management, a scouting and managing agency for motorsport drivers, which over the years included talented drivers like Giancarlo Fisichella, Jarno Trulli, Robert Kubica, Max

Webber, and Pastor Maldonado. World-champion Fernando Alonso, was just 18 when he was enrolled in FB management and lead his new project, remaining in Formula One.

Briatore decided to diversify his interests and in the mid 90s he created Supertec, supplying engines to the Formula One Teams. In 1998 Briatore opened a nightclub in Sardinia on the Costa Smeralda: Billionaire, soon hailed as the favourite nightspot of the International Jet Set. Through the years, Billionaire has become a renowned international name, synonym of glamour and quality entertainment. Billionaire Life is today a ‘luxury services’ holding, which includes nightclubs, restaurants, beach clubs, hotels, resorts, and designer clothing.

In 2000, Briatore orchestrated the purchase

of the Benetton Team by Renault and the French Company appointed Briatore as Renault F1 Team Managing Director. Two years later, he also became Managing Director of Renault Sport. Briatore restructured and strengthened the F1, Renault F1 progressed rapidly and won a double championship for two consecutive years, 2005 and 2006. In 2005 Briatore conceived and created the GP2 Series, a Championship to compete next to Formula One, a training ground and a showcase for talented drivers The series has discovered and brought to Formula One drivers of calibre such as Lewis Hamilton, Heiki Kovalainen, Nico Rosberg, Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean. In 2007, Briatore bought together with Bernie Ecclestone the English soccer team Queens Park Rangers. The team was brought up from the bottom of Champions League to Premier League. In 2011, Briatore and Ecclestone sold QPR to Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandez.

In 2011, the International expansion of Billionaire Life continued on all fronts, including the development Billionaire Italian Couture, the menswear Luxury line launched in 2005.

In November 2011, Briatore launched the first offspring of his famous nightclub with the opening of Billionaire Istanbul. In Spring 2012, he opened the prestigious restaurant CIPRIANI Monte Carlo and a summer Club: Billionaire Bodrum. At the same time, Briatore started another ambitious project, which was completed in 2013 Billionaire Resort, a luxury apartment complex in Malindi, on the Kenyan coast, next to the Hotel and Thalaspa Henry Chenot Lion in the Sun which Briatore created more than 10 years ago.

Today Billionaire Life employs about 1,200 persons in Europe and Africa. In April 2013, Briatore took Billionaire Life to a new direction by selling the majority of the divisions “leisure and entertainment” to the Investment fund based in Singapore, Bay Capital. The alliance has the objective to expand the brand in Asia and the rest of the world. In 2014 Briatore added a new impressive destination to Monte Carlo’s nightlife:

Twiga Monte Carlo, a water front restaurant, lounge and night club. Thanks to his charisma and his notoriety as a sharp business man, Briatore starred in the Italian version of the famous TV show THE APPRENTICE, in the role of the BOSS in 2012 and 2013. The show quickly became a cult programme in Italy.

In 2015 Billionaire Mansion Dubai was added to the Billionaire Life portfolio. With insight and acumen in finding the right partners, Briatore created an impressive structure, which comprises restaurant, nightclub, shisha lounge and a Billionaire Couture retail store, inside the Taj Hotel. Today Billionaire Mansion Dubai has achieved worldwide fame and has become a reference in Dubai's nightlife.

Billionaire Couture was as a joint venture with business group Percassi. The brand grew on the International market and in June 2016, Philipp Plein Group acquired a majority stake of it, to implement a strong development of the brand worldwide.

While continuing the expansion of the Billionaire Life brand, Briatore continues his involvement in Formula One. Recently, he has been instrumental in bringing the Formula One Grand Prix to Baku, in Azerbaijan, with a first successful round in Spring 2016.
