: Earlier the farmers used to cultivate only the locally available

Okra variety with low yield potential i.e. 10-12 tonnes per

hectare and highly susceptible to powdery yellow vein

mosaic virus disease. He has approached ICAR-KVK,

Thiruvarur to take advice on improving his farm income

through other Okra varieties / hybrids. To overcome this

issue the Front Line Demonstration on New TNAU Bhendi

Hybrid Co 4with a yield potential of 25 t/ha and resistant to

yellow vein mosaic virus disease has been proposed to

sustain and generate more income from Okra cultivation for

the year 2016-17 and accordingly the programme was

approved by the Directorate, ICAR-ATARI, Zone VIII,

Bengaluru. Initially ICAR-KVK, Thiruvarur has provided

some important critical inputs like TNAU- Bhendi Hybrid Co

4 seeds, vermin-compost and bio control agents. He got a

yield of 20.17 tonnes yield per hectare with a gross income of

Rs. 121020/-, net profit of Rs. 78020/- per hectare with a cost

benefit ratio of 3.0.

Spread

: Paddy is the major crop cultivated by his family members

during last several years. As a Government servant, he

worked in the capacity of Assistant Block Development

Officer and got VRS. He was tried to shift part of his land

holding from traditional paddy crop to revenue

generating alternate crops.

He approached the ICAR-KVK and we introduced

him the sericulture. We advised him to cultivate V1

mulberry variety and accordingly he planted mulberry in

1.8 acres of land and later we trained him in rearing of

silkworm technologies.

Initially he started rearing of yellow silkworm and

Page 67: Tamil Nadu Agricultural Universitykvkthiruvarur.com/OFTFLD/1617.pdf · ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 (FOR THE PERIOD APRIL 2016 TO MARCH 2017) ICAR KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA (THIRUVARUR) Tamil

67

harvested 60-65 kgs of cocoon yield per 100 dfl (Disease

Free Laying). He felt that though it was remunerative, he

wanted to improve his cocoon yield.

And ultimately This KVK has introduced bivoltine

white silkworm to the sericulture farmers in the place of

yellow silkworm and he harvested 74.4 kgs of white silk

cocoon as against 59.8 kgs of in yellow silk cocoon per 100

dfl. After the introduction of white silkworm, he has

earned a net income of Rs.15440/- for 100 dfl as against

Rs.3972/- for yellow silkworm.

At that time, chawki rearing was also done by him

and observed little bit of high mortality and reared only 4

times per year. Later, we insisted him to get chawki

reared silkworm to increase the survival percent of the

silkworms. Now he is practicing rearing of Bivoltine

silkworm 6-8 times per year with high survival percent of

silkworm, which ultimately produced higher cocoon

yield.

This KVK has also introduced to him, Ilamathi, a

botanical formulations for higher silk yield. After

spraying Ilamathi, he harvested 81.7 kgs of silk cocoon as

against 73.61 kgs of silk cocoon in unsprayed trails. The

average of 100 cocoon weight in Ilamathi sprayed plot

was 222.5 grams as against 208.5 grams in farmers‟

practice.

5 Impact Economic

Gains

: He earned a net return of Rs.19268 in Ilamathi sprayed

trail where as in farmers‟ practice it was Rs.16425. The

BCR also showed higher in Ilamathi sprayed trails with

2.76 than the farmers‟ practice (2.5).

6 Impact on

Employment

Generation

: It provides round the year rearing of silkworm and give

employment opportunity for at least 2 female laborers for

4 Impact Horizontal

Spread

: Thiruvarur farmers have animal husbandry as the

integral part of their income. The main problem faced by

the farmers in the animal husbandry is the incidence of

diseases and treatment cost incurred is very high. The

farmers identify the animals ailing only at late evening as

they have their farming activity all the day. So an

immediate attention with simple hands on technique

with practical application is required. As an objective to

reduce the cost incurred for treatment and to provide

treatment on time, Ethnoveterinary treatment techniques

have been developed by Professor. Dr.Punniyamoorthy

of Veterinary University Training and Research Centre,

Tanjore. He developed techniques with herbs available

in the home itself. These basic techniques were

demonstrated to NABARD CAT training programme for

NABARD club members were demonstrated in three day

training programme. The techniques learned by the

farmers were practiced by the farm women. Now the

farm women realized the benefit of the techniques and

they save money spent for treating their animals.

5 Impact Economic

Gains

: The money spent for treatment for small ruminants is

approximately Rs.100-200/ treatment and large animals

is Rs.200-400 depending on the ailments. Now the

farmers can save that money by treating the animals with

herbal techniques of their own. Also unnecessary

antibiotic resistance and drug induced stress has been

reduced.

Jai Kisan Jai Vigyan / Technology Week

Jai Kisan Jai Vigyan week was celebrated in ICAR KVK Needamangalam for five

days from 23.12.2016 to 29.12.2016. To create awareness about the function, farmers and

farm women meetings were conducted in KVK, Rishiyur, Rayapuram, Sithamalli and

Sathanoor. Dr.V. Seetharaman, Project consultant, NADP Pulses Scheme, TRRI, Aduthurai

and Tmt. S.Meena, Asst. Director of Agriculture Needamangalam participated and gave

presidential speech. During the programme, emphasis were given on enhancement of pulse

production technology with rhizobium seed treatment, demonstration of TNAU groundnut

rich for groundnut cultivating farmers. In NICRA village Rayapuram rearing of fingerlings

in hapas technology was demonstrated and the B 40 hapas were distributed to the

beneficiaries. Ethno veterinary treatment techniques were demonstrated to the FFS farm

women in Sithamalli village. An awareness programme on nutrition and diet for farm

women has been discussed to the farm women of Rishiyur village. Totally 215 farmers

participated.

10. J. Interventions on drought mitigation (if the KVK included in this special programme) –

Drought mitigation through PPFM spray in NICRA village during Sambha 2016-2018

Mr.Rajagopal, Rayapuram Village, Needamangalam Taluk, Thiruvarur district.

He had taken sowing of flood tolerant variety CR 1009 sub 1 variety during

September 2016. The average annual rainfall of the village is 1100 mm and the village will

receive about 854 mm during North East monsoon. North East monsoon regularly starts in

the month of October and ends in December. But this year NICRA adopted village received

Page 72: Tamil Nadu Agricultural Universitykvkthiruvarur.com/OFTFLD/1617.pdf · ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 (FOR THE PERIOD APRIL 2016 TO MARCH 2017) ICAR KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA (THIRUVARUR) Tamil

72

only 59.8 mm, 31.2 and 27.8 mm of rainfall during October, November and December

respectively which is deficit to a tune of 86 per cent. Also drought situation raised due to

deficit rainfall during flower and panicle initiation of the paddy crop. In order to mitigate

the drought situation, ICAR – Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Thiruvarur demonstrated pink

pigmented facultative methelotrops bacteria (PPFM) spray @ 200ml/acre. He observed that the

moisture in the crop was maintained due to spray of PPFM and the crop could withstand

drought for 12 to 15 days.

The results indicated that he got normal yield of 2420 kg/ac when two subsequent

protective irrigations were given after the mitigation work of spraying PPFM @ 1ml/lit

spray using battery sprayer or boom sprayer. He had net return of Rs.14,300/ac.

General observations by the scientists

Greenness maintained in crop for 7-12 days depending upon the soil type.

No further effect could be seen under continuous water stress.

In some fields, effect could not be distinguished due immediate rain/irrigation.

Early panicle emergence was observed in PPFM sprayed fields.

General feed back of the farmers

Turning of leaves from light yellow to green was observed 3 days after PPFM spray.

Sturdiness was maintained in crop even under water stress in clayey soils.

When two protective irrigations were given after PPFM spray, they could get normal

yield. Some felt that even one irrigation after PPFM spray was enough to get good

yield in the matured crop.

Early panicle emergence was observed in PPFM sprayed fields.

Felt the need of two sprays of PPFM before and after the protective irrigations.

11.A. Impact of KVK activities (Not to be restricted for reporting period)

1. Introduction of flood tolerant long duration paddy variety CR 1009 Sub 1

Village Name – Rayapuram, Needamangalam Block

Skill Transfer

Paddy is the main crop cultivated during Samba season (September- January) in

Thiruvarur District. The main problem encountered during this season is submergence of

paddy crop for about 10 to 15 days due to high intensive rainfall and cyclones (North east

monsoon) during the period. As a result the farmers will lose about 75 per cent of paddy

production besides total wastage of paddy straw. Hence, this KVK has introduced the flood

tolerant long duration variety CR 1009 Sub 1 in 40 hectares during Samba season at NICRA

village of Rayapuram of Needamangalam Block of Thiruvarur District. This variety

withstands flooding for a period of 15-20 days without affecting its performanc

Adoption (%) – 95

Impact Before

Farmers of Thiruvarur Districts are generally cultivating ADT 40, ADT 44 and ADT

50 as a long duration crop. But the paddy crop cultivated during samba season in general

affected by the northeast monsoon which is coincide with this season. Hence, the farmers

either get very low yield or complete yield loss

Impact After

The performance of CR 1009 Sub 1 during last Samba season was highly satisfied the

farmers as this variety was withstanding water logging condition for the period of 15-17

days. During October, 2015, only 33.3 % of normal rainfall was received, where as in

November and December, it was excess of 42.32 and 41.53 per cent with 12 and 7 continuous

water logging days in the field, respectively. The yield obtained in CR 1009 Sub 1 plot was

6.21 t/ha with a net income of Rs. 57045/ ha and BCR of 2.58, where as in local varieties it

was 5.43 t/ha with a net income of Rs. 47083/ha and BCR of 2.38. Now in Thiruvarur

district major area under this variety during samba season.

Measures Taken

Giving wider publication in local newspapers, Information provided during farmers

grievances day which is held every month at Collectorate, Distribution of pamphlets, posters

at exhibition stalls and melas and other extension techniques were followed. The CR 1009

sub 1 seeds are produced in our farm and readily available for the supply to the farmers and

Department of Agriculture also supply this variety seeds through their extension centres.

2. Demonstration of New Tapioca Variety YTP-1 in Thiruvarur District

Village Name – Ovelkudi, Mannargudi block

Skill Transfer

Demonstration of New Tapioca Variety YTP-1 in Thiruvarur District along with

package of practices through Front Line Demonstration, On-campus training, Off-campus

training, Method demonstration and Field Days.

Adoption (%) – 62

Impact Before

Before the introduction of YTP 1 Tapioca the farmers were adopted to grow /

cultivate local varieties available in this district, which were highly low yielder i.e. 35 t/ha

and susceptible to pest and diseases especially Cassava mosaic virus. Due to this poor

yielder variety the farm income of Cassava growing farmers were very low in the particular

village ie. Ovelkudi.

Impact After

To overcome this issue and to improve the farm income of Tapioca growing farmers,

this ICAR-KVK implemented an Front Line Demonstration during the financial year 2015-16

with the approval of ICAR-ATATI, Bengaluru on New Tapioca Variety YTP-1 in Thiruvarur

District. This YTP 1 Tapioca variety is higher yielder i.e. 49.50 t/ha and resistant to Cassava

mosaic virus. By cultivating new Tapioca Variety YTP-1 the farmers recorded a yield of 41.5

t/ha with the local variety yield of 36.5 t/ha and the per cent yield increase was 13.8.

Moreover the incidence of Cassava mosaic virus is also very meagre. The visualizing the

performance of YTP 1 Tapioca the other farmers i.e. 62 per cent of total Tapioca growers

were switched over to YTP 1 Tapioca variety.

Measures Taken

Distribution of Tapioca setts, Demonstration of cultivation practices like setts

treatment, manuring etc.,

regarding Tapioca cultivation

3.Mechanization in rice

Thiruvarur district is located at heart of cauvery delta zone with Rice based

cropping system. Rice is the major crop cultivated in an area of 1,52,000 ha. The rice

cultivation in Thiruvarur district has undergone a series of changes given the

unprecedented labour shortage and enhanced labour wages for important crop

operations like leveling, nursery preparation, transplanting, weeding and harvesting.

Page 75: Tamil Nadu Agricultural Universitykvkthiruvarur.com/OFTFLD/1617.pdf · ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 (FOR THE PERIOD APRIL 2016 TO MARCH 2017) ICAR KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA (THIRUVARUR) Tamil

The labour scarcity become acute leading to delay in agricultural operations in

Thiruvarur district. Hence, to address the above said problems KrishiVigyan Kendra,

Thiruvarur is working with the thrust area of “Mechanization in rice cultivation”. KVK,

approached the problem through popularization of direct sown drum seeder and

machineries for transplanted rice.

Direct Drum seeding

To step up the profitability in rice cultivation, cost cutting technology and

mechanization for labour saving is the only way despite of the productivity aspects. By

considering the above issues, KVK Thiruvarur district has initiated to popularize TNAU

improved drum seeder in Thiruvarur district from 2007 onwards to till date. So far 21

FLDs have been, besides, 5 OFTs, 37 on and off campus trainings were organized to

diffuse the importance of drum seeder in rice cultivation.

Large Scale Demonstration

To create awareness among the farmers extensive method demonstration on

direct drum seeding technology was organized at KVK instructional farm. More than

420 farmers participated and get clarified from the experts. In addition to above 8

booklets and 23 popular articles have been published. Also 10 radio talks and one TV

talk have been given.

Micro Level Impact

The impact at the operating villages of KVK namely Poonthalagudi, Periyakottai,

Iyampettai, Pulavarnatham, Vettaithidal has been immense. In consequent, more than

360 farmers contacted this Kendra to know the technology and its utilization to different

situations. On an average, an amount of Rs.1500 to Rs.2000 is saved from this

technology, as it doesn‟t need nursery, seedling pulling out and transplanting.

Moreover, the farmers can take up sowing with family labour or limited labour in event

of peak season. Also farmers has visited the FLDs and attended the training programme

and gained knowledge and started drum seeded technology. To be specific to single

farmer namely, Th.S.Balaguru, a leading rice farmer from Vettaithidal owning 25 acres

of wet land has converted from conventional palnting to direct drum seeder in his entire

25 acre with least dependence on labour for the crop establishment

Macro Level Impact

From the graph it is evident that the recent three years has seen remarkable increase

in the usage of drum seeder for rice cultivation. Due to the concerted effort through

different ways and means, drum seeded rice cultivation has been expanded to more

Page 76: Tamil Nadu Agricultural Universitykvkthiruvarur.com/OFTFLD/1617.pdf · ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 (FOR THE PERIOD APRIL 2016 TO MARCH 2017) ICAR KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA (THIRUVARUR) Tamil

76

than 2620 acres in the district. It has been advising farmers to make use of subsidies of

Dept of Agrl. Engineering and other schemes of Dept of Agriculture. So far 620 drum

seeders have been sold through AED. KVK took various interventions like 37 on and off

campus trainings, 18 FLDs in 18 ha, two large scale demonstrations etc. to promote the

mechanization in rice cultivation. besides, 5 OFTs, FLDs on total mechanization were

conducted in Chickapattu, Pilavadi, Chithadi, Melapoovanur, Devangudi and

Perembur villages.

Large Scale Demonstration

To popularize the various farm implements and equipments suitable for rice

cultivation among the farmers of Thiruvarur district under labour scarcity condition a

large scale demonstration on farm mechanization in rice cultivation was organized at

KVK, Needamangalam. More than 424 progressive farmers from various locations of

Thiruvarur district had participated in the demonstration. Seed sowing equipment, laser

leveler, 6 and 8 row transplanters, power weeders and combined harvesters were

demonstrated. During the programmes farmers and scientists interaction programme

was also conducted.

Besides, 6 booklets, 24 popular articles, 8 leaflets have been published.

Micro Level Impact

The impact at the operating villages of KVK namely Chickapattu, Pilavadi, Chithadi,

Melapoovanur and Perembur has been immense. The detailed microlevel impact has

been analysed using four indicators namely Economic impact, Technological Impact,

Ecological Impact and Sociological impact.

Economic Impact

Name of the operating villages Average income from one ha of rice BCR

Chickapattu 52500 1: 3.75

Pilavadi 50100 1:3.25

Chithadi 49180 1:2.99

Melapoovanur 51450 1:3.33

Perembur 49550 1:3.01

The table has clearly indicated that in all the villages farmers could get atleast

Rs.20,000 from one acre of rice cultivation by employing transplanter, power weeder and

harvester. Among the villages Chickapattu topped the list with Rs.52,500 from one ha of

Page 77: Tamil Nadu Agricultural Universitykvkthiruvarur.com/OFTFLD/1617.pdf · ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 (FOR THE PERIOD APRIL 2016 TO MARCH 2017) ICAR KRISHI VIGYAN KENDRA (THIRUVARUR) Tamil

77

mechanized rice cultivation with BCR 1:3.75. This was followed by Melapoovanur and

Pilavadi where average income of 51450 and 50100 has been recorded.

The general feeling among farmers is to own their own power weeder so that they

can anytime use it for weeding purpose. The economic well being of farmers has been

enhanced substantially as they could earn at least Rs.5000- 6000 more by switching over to

mechanized cultivation of rice from conventional cultivation. To understand the economic

gain in specific terms partial budgeting has been resorted to. The debit and credit of

Mr.Rajendran a farmer in Pilavadi has been collected. The added cost, Added return,

reduced cost and reduced revenue were separately worked out to calculate net change in

income.

It is evident from figure given below a total of Rs.6425 could be saved by farmers

from one acre of land if they resort to mechanized rice cultivation. This may even increase if

farmers organize themselves into group and can lobby for reduction in rent for transplanter

and harvester. Two other farmers namely Th.G.Kumar of Alangudi and Th.S.Arokiyadoss of

Iyempettai bought Asian Rice transplanter and successfully growing crops by timely

planting without depending the labourers. So far thirteen farmers are processing their

application to buy the transplanter.

Technological Impact

The technological impact of interventions of KVK was analysed among fifty farmers

randomly selected from five villages where Front line demonstration is organized. This

includes FLD beneficiaries and farmers who have attended field days pertaining to

mechanization in rice. The technological impact has been assessed through analyzing the

Awareness, Knowledge and Adoption of Agricultural Mechinaries pertaining to rice. The

results are given below

Cent per cent of rice growers taken for the study were well aware of power

tiller, transplanter and combine harvester. About one fourth (34.00 per cent) of

respondents were not aware of hydraulic land leveler. As for as knowledge is concerned

cent per cent rice growers taken for the study did possess knowledge on power tiller and

combine harvester. A significant percent of respondents (56.00 per cent) did not possess

knowledge of operation of transplanter, the tray preparation and preparation of land for

transplanter. 40.00 percent of rice growers did not possess knowledge and none of the

respondents had used hydraulic land leveler. Similarly though the adoption percentage

has been impressive for transplanter and Power weeder, it is not substantial. From the

findings, the KVK scientists come to know that further strengthening of the efforts to

popularization of machineries of rice cultivation is required to be done.

The overall adoption of farm mechanization in rice was found to be 60.00

percent. The adoption level was considerable and it may be raised in next year. This

commendable adoption level of farm mechanization in rice was due to the continuous

efforts taken by the KVK. Needamangalam to induce the farmers to adopt farm

mechanization.

It is privilege for KVK, Needamangalam that KVK has given on hiring the

transplanter to farmers of Thiruvarur district and covered 153 acres of transplanting.

Also it is clear that farmers are adopting the technology offered by KVK through

trainings, demonstration and FLDs.

Entrepreneur Developed

From the large scale demonstration a farmer namely Mr.Sakthi from Sikkapatu has

turned to Entrepreneur and purchased by purchasing a tranplanter and a power weeder. He

is doing the service of giving of his machineries on custom hiring with nominal rate. The

farmer is also planning for further extension of his buissness by purchasing another

transplnater, power weeder, and machine operated tray nursery.

NICRA-National Innovation On Climate Resilient Agriculture

The village Rayapuram has a population of 3176 (846 farm families/households)

with a geographical area of about 920 ha. Paddy is the main crop cultivated during

Samba season (September- January). The main problem encountered in the village

during this season is submergence of paddy crop for about 10 to 15 days due to high

intensive rainfall and cyclones during the period. As a result the farmers in the village

lose about 75 Per cent of paddy production besides total wastage of paddy straw. The

farmers of the village are also engaged in livestock, backyard poultry and goatery as

subsidiary enterprise which are also affected due to floods.

FFS- Sustained poultry production From Egg to Egg (2016-17)

Backyard poultry is one of the income generating practices in Thiruvarur district.

One of the common problem faced by the backyard poultry farmers is the reduced

production of good quality chicks, limited knowledge about hatching technology, poor

feeding and disease management. In order to advocate the package of practices, an FFS on

„Sustained poultry production From Egg to Egg ‟ was conducted at Sithamalli village with

30 women farmers who were really interested to learn the hands on techniques in backyard

poultry.

A total of 8 classes were organized starting with inauguration on 24.08.2016. Ten

number of chicks, 5 kg of commercial feed, antibiotics and vitamin supplements were given

to thirty farmers. Classes were organised in such a way coinciding with the vaccination

schedule and brooder management practices. Grower and layer management classes were

taken and disease identification and treatment techniques were demonstrated on November

and December session.

Integrated Farming System

To improve the income of the farmers ICAR – KVK propose wet land based

integrated farming system. As a part of this programme two on campus (02.02.2017,

17.03.2017), one off campus ( 01.06.2017 ) and one training (31.01.2017) to the extension

functionaries has been conducted. Totally 112 farmers benefitted. In this financial year three

IFS contact farmers were identified and Mecheri sheep breed has been included in their unit.

Apart from that improved tilapia variety namely GIFT Tilapia has been introduced in their

farm ponds for quick growth and early generation of income. The sheep at the age group of

three months are bought to the farmers and now they are in growing stage. As the sheep

were given after harvest of paddy, the residual straw is best utilized by the sheep, thus

reducing the feed cost. One of the IFS farmer Mr. Ganesh Kamalakannan trained his sheep

to graze the weeds in his cotton field thus reducing the use of weedicide and in turn the soil

fertility is improved by the waste materials excreted from sheep during grazing
